Sunday School is one of the few ballroom community projects in Berlin that go beyond simply hosting balls and offering classes. It’s an anchor point for the community and, for many, also an entryway into the scene, and a way to find themselves. We’ve been sharing their events for the past couple of years, but for some reason I never managed to attend one of their balls. But I’m so glad I finally did, because this was a very special function.
Most of the Sunday School events happen at the wonderful ACUD Macht Neu in Mitte, which is a place that I love to visit because it’s such a hidden treasure in the otherwise pretty gentrified-to-death district. I’m so glad some of these cultural hubs were able to be maintained here and offer a space for different subcultures and scenes to unfold. I also love that ACUD is such a supporter of trans* events and projects – I see you!
So, Sunday School fits right in here, and I immediately could feel this was a type of home here for the guests. The atmosphere was quite different than many of the other balls I have been to over the years – you could really feel a sense of community and family here. It is a smaller function, but that offers a level of intimacy and comfort that might not be possible elsewhere.

I loved that they had their trophies custom-made as little art sculptures – such a unique touch! The energy on the runway was running high; these performers didn’t need a fancy location and themed decor. All they needed was the floor and the hype of the audience. And it reflects in the photos so much. I think I haven’t felt so excited about a photo set in quite a while.
Unlike most of the balls I have documented I used my old party photo camera with a flash for this one. I rarely use a flash because the flash is a little invasive for the film crew and other photographers. But it paid off this time because it created an almost 90s retro aesthetic that I absolutely love. There is an energy and authenticity to this set that I think really encapsulates the talent and uniqueness of the scene in a way that I haven’t managed before. So thanks, Sunday School, for having me, and I hope you enjoy the set!
As always, participants and organizers are invited to download and share the photos. A tag back to @iheartberlin is always appreciated.
The next Sunday School is happening on October 11 at ACUD.
