Aérea Negrot is a Berlin icon. The sad news of her death that reached us on Thursday will not change that. She was beloved far beyond Berlin’s queer nightlife, theater, and art world. She was a brilliant artist, performer, DJ. She was mother, she was diva, she was queen, she was everything and more.
It’s a first one for me, to write about someone from within our circles who passed. I’m honestly heartbroken, but I feel like I have so much to say.

I am still quite overwhelmed with feelings of joy, especially now going through all the fun photos of our special night (if you have more photos send them to us!). 10 years is a very special number, but I’m glad that we could do this big number justice. Teaming up with the Olympus Perspective Playground was an amazing opportunity that I am so proud of and thankful for. Being surrounded by the amazing artworks of this immersive exhibition and the stunning venue of Kraftwerk was just much better than I imagined it to be. And by the amount of euphoric faces that I saw during the night I am confident to say I was not the only one.

The question is not, what is Aérea Negrot doing, it’s more: What is she NOT doing? The Venezuelan-born, Berlin-based artistic all-rounder works in every art form that comes to mind: She sings, performs, produces, DJs… She became internationally known for her collaboration with the dance floor superpower of “Hercules and Love Affair”, but only referencing this stage of career would limit her art. Her eclecticism jumps from pure energy behind the decks, over a love for experimental productions, to a voice filling a concert hall with every tone from a high falsetto to a roaring baritone. We still remember her mesmerizing avant-garde performance at Volksbühne. Before she’s spinning our 10 Year Anniversary event this Saturday, we met up with the Queen of Versatility and talked about dirty club corners, drunk aunts, and her exciting upcoming projects.

What happens, when a pair of big nightlife makers of Berlin get together and create something new: Exactly, something bigger! And so goes the story of Sampson who has been running his crazy karaokee night Cherry-o-kie now for years and PANSY who has taken Berlin’s party scene by storm with her gay R’n’B party Sissy and her PANSY presents… drag extravaganzas. Those two crazy kids have teamed up to create YO! SISSY – Berlin’s first queer music festival which started back in July 2015. With a massive line-up of over 50 acts the festival took over the venues Schwuz, Neue Heimat and SO36 bringing together the diversity and creativity from all over the world onto the stages of Berlin. We are super excited about this new festival because it’s the first of its kind here in Berlin and it’s fresh and edgy and full of potential. We can’t wait for the much hyped third edition with Planningtorock, Chicks on Speed, Vitalic, Lotic and many other great acts happening from July 28 til 29, 2017. Watch out for the Yo Sissy market happening on Saturday during the day which is also gonne be with free entrance for everyone. Get your tickets and info here!

Aerea Negrot by Rafael Scovino
I have to say the new Hercules & Love Affair album Blue Songs was my one and only mood stabilizer over the sentimental Christmas days and I drove my family insane with my disco sessions upstairs. But this versatile and joyful mix of perfect songs is just too good not to be played on repeat for hours.
For his second album greedy Hercules got involved with a whole bunch of love affairs. Amongst them not only Bloc Party’s Kele but also Berlin-based artist Aerea Negrot. She opens the record with the awesome song Painted Eyes which is one of the highlights of the record. But talking of highlights – there is actually not one song that I would not describe as a highlight – and when can you ever say that about an album?
Blue Songs will be released in the end of January. A concert at Berghain will follow on March 3rd 2011. After the jump you can have a listen to the song My House with guest vocalist Shaun Wright.
