A Fleamarket Guide for Berlin

A Fleamarket Guide for Berlin

Berlin is the capital city of flea markets and visiting these iconic institutions is a great way of spending a couple of hours of your weekend (singles watch out: there is a strong possibility of starting a flirt with a handsome stranger at the innumerous stalls) but as I walk along the Spree towards my first destination, the Arena Indoor Flea Market, feelings of smallness start to unsettle. In fact, I could not have chosen a worse day to venture out into flea markets – it is freezing cold, bloody foggy and there is mud everywhere due to the melting snow and I cannot stop thinking to myself that only a strike of luck will prevent me from slipping and falling into the river. It would not be the first time…

Gendarmenmarkt, photo: Michael Setzpfandt

Although this year it may feel like the Christmas Markets season came exceptionally early – with still no traces of snow and surprisingly mild temperatures, the festive frenzy is upon us – and we’re excited for all the Glühwein, Plätzchen and proper Christmas shopping. In this year’s guide, we’re reacquianting you with some places from last year and presenting others that are happening for the very first time.

When it comes to Christmas events, Berlin’s just as versatile as you might have expected – you’ll find a few traditional markets, some really design-oriented events, a film festival and even a masked ball.

7 Reasons why you need to check out the new Bread&Butter by Zalando

7 Reasons why you need to check out the new Bread&Butter by Zalando

The countdown has begun: In just a few days – from September 2nd till 4th to be exact – the new Bread&Butter by Zalando is happening at Arena Berlin. The consumer trend show has the theme “NOW” this year and will be celebrating what is hot in fashion, music and food. Have a look at the program and line-up now to get an idea.

The Bread&Butter has quite a long and diverse history. It started off in Cologne in 2003, but then moved to Berlin and later Barcelona for a while where it rose to international fame, before returning to Berlin to become one of the major events of Berlin Fashion Week. But as many of you have probably noticed it stopped happening a couple of seasons ago. But this was not the end, it was a necessary period of transition and reinvention. Now it’s back, rising like a phoenix from the ashes and everything is different! What happened? And why should we care? Here’s the break-down..

Spareribs, Icecream and Whiskey – Bite Club meets Singleton

Spareribs, Icecream and Whiskey – Bite Club meets Singleton

On Friday the awesome Bite Club street food market had its final edition as an open air at the Spree this year. I was lucky to be invited by Singleton to join the fun and I’m glad I followed their invitation because this turned out to be a massive pleasure for my taste buds. I hadn’t been to this location for the Bite Club in a while and I am glad to see that it has developed so nicely since my last visit with great trucks and booths and an interesting crowd who enjoys good food.

The Singleton took the opportunity at Bite Club to present all their different whiskeys at their lovingly decorated bar where you could get three unique cocktails and at the charming flavor garden where you could have a special tasting experience of the different kinds of whiskey they offer. They had also teamed up with a couple of the other street food vendors to come up with whiskey-infused dishes.

One of them was the Pignut BBQ from the Armeniusmarkthalle in Moabit. I tasted their ribs the first time at the Bite Club BBQ at the Funkhaus Nalepastraße a while back and was blown away by how amazingly delicious these ribs are – the best ones I have ever tasted in Berlin. For this edition of the Bite Club they had a special sauce prepare with Singleton, and one of the cocktails of the Singleton bar had their BBQ sauce as one of the ingredients (sounds unusual but was really nice). The second collaboration was with Jones Icecream who had a special Singletonbites ice cream and cookie mix with a caramel whiskey sauce – yum! After the jump we have some impressions of the Bite Club and a little cocktail recipe video for you.

Win Tickets for Berlin Festival with Absolut

Win Tickets for Berlin Festival with Absolut

In a few days it’s already here: This year’s early edition of the Berlin Festival. It normally took place in the Fall, but with the changes the festival is going through they also moved their date into the Spring to be the first festival of the year to open the festival season. Since it’s change of location from Tempelhof to the newly founded Arena Park that includes not only the Arena itself but also a lot of the space, venues and parks around it, the festival has experienced pretty much a reboot. We are totally in favor of these changes and like that it has more of a club atmosphere now and seems a bit more true to the spirit of Berlins nightlife.

Speaking of nightlife! Absolut is one of this year’s supporter of the Berlin Festival and they know a thing or two about creative nightlife. In support of the Berlin Festival they commissioned XI Design to create five big street art murals spread over several in town in the spirit of their Absolut Nights campaign. They look super fun and are great additions to all the ones we previously reported about. After the jump you can see a making of video, some photos and you’ll get a chance to win a pair of last minute Berlin Festival tickets!

Goodbye, Tempelhof – Berlin Festival Moves to Arena Park

Goodbye, Tempelhof – Berlin Festival Moves to Arena Park

OH. MY. GOD. I’m so relieved that after all those years I can finally blurt it out without being unsupportive of Berlin’s own precious music festival: I HATED Tempelhof as the venue for the Berlin Festival. I don’t know why, I totally love Tempelhof for all the exhibitions and trade shows. But for some reason for the festival it never worked for me. Too big, to annonymous, horrible sound, and it always seemed a bit too empty to create a real buzzing atmosphere. And how inconvenient that they had to stop playing music quite early in the night because of the noise complaints from the neighbors.

So when the news broke a couple of days ago that Berlin Festival was moving to Arena Park I was actually excited about it. I’m sure people will have all sorts of ideas why this happened. I can recommend an interesting read over at our friends from Mit Vergnügen where Berlin Festival booker Stefan Lehmkuhl talks about the reasons for the move and the newly founded Arena Park area. After the jump you can get a little overview of the new festival grounds at the Spree that you can see for yourself live from September 5-7, 2014.

The Spirit of Istanbul Festival 2013 Photos

The Spirit of Istanbul Festival 2013 Photos

On Saturday Yeni Raki invited to the Spirit of Istanbul festival to celebrate modern Turkish culture in our city. They invited a lot of Turkish-run local businesses to host a booth in their mordern bazaar, including celebrated fashion labels Issever Bahri and Ina Seifart, as well as Mvschi Kreuzberg. On the food side they had delicious vegitarian food by Knofi, sweets by Chocolateria Sünde, several street food stands and a big live cooking booth. On the stage they presented a diverse program of oriental and contemporary dance, live music, DJs and performances. Enjoy my impressions after the jump.
