Looking at Berlin Fashion Week from a Distance

Looking at Berlin Fashion Week from a Distance

Another Fashion Week season is in the history books and with it another week that has been accompanied by bickering and ridicule about our Berlin-version of the world-wide industry event. It’s been going on for years now, it never really got better. The articles trashing it, the comments on social media making fun of it. It’s almost like a sport to spit on Berlin Fashion Week and getting high-fived for it. I personally prefer to look on the bright side: The amazing fashion talents that are presented here!

A Guide to Berlin Fashion: Fetish Edition

A Guide to Berlin Fashion: Fetish Edition

UY x Evelyn Bencicova

Did we grab your attention? In the last issue of our series A Guide to Berlin Fashion we wrote about the sporty side of style. Now we want to cover the b-side of being en vogue: fetish-inspired fashion.

In both fashion and Berlin anything is possible. What you wear is who you are and vice versa. Fashion is a part of expressing yourself and sometimes even the most private parts of your persona need to find an outlet. Let’s say you have a fetish. Let’s say for latex. To enjoy and express said fetish, you don’t want cheap, smelling rubber materials. You want high quality, prêt-à-porter pieces that combine your lust for latex and your standard of style. Well, don’t look any further, we present to you 7 of the most interesting, exclusive designers of the city with a slight love for kink. Certainly, even Anna Wintour would consider wearing some of these looks. At least in the privacy of her NY townhouse.

If you don’t entertain a specific fetish yet, we’re sure after checking out the following designers you’ll want to cultivate a kinky preference of your own. Enjoy the racy chic straight outta Berlin after the jump.

Sounds of Black – Backstage with Augustin Teboul

Sounds of Black – Backstage with Augustin Teboul

photos: Olga Khristolyubova

For the German/French duo of Odély Teboul and Annelie Augustin, Berlin Fashion Week always meant more than sending models down a runway in their collections. The Woolmark Prize winners of 2014 are well known for their extravagant fashion performances. This year Augustin Teboul decided to photograph personalities that reflect their label, wearing their new Fall/Winter 2015/16 collection, which they displayed as a gallery exhibition in the gorgeous Kronprinzenpalais, along with a live show using two staircases as opposed to a runway. The photographs of various artists were taken in Berlin by Stefan Milev, and published in a magazine titled “Sounds of Black,” suitably representing their latest collection. This season, the pair drew inspiration from the personalities they photographed, captivated by the unification of their strength and fragility. They channeled this into their line while continuing to speak through the mystery of black garments, experimenting with materials, crafting knit sweaters with ornate embroidery, patchwork dresses with leather and pleats and wool coats with lacquer trim. Our photographer Olga went backstage to have a glance into the preparation process. Styled by Wella Professional their look could not have been more sophisticated. Enjoy the photographic impressions after the jump.

ESMOD International Fashion Show 2014 Photos

ESMOD International Fashion Show 2014 Photos

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ESMOD Berlin the private design school invited 10 of their most successful and celebrated graduates from all the ESMOD schools around the globe. Two very respected and celebrated labels based in Berlin opened the show and for them it was pretty much a home rum. I’m glad I got to see the rising star Marina Hoermanseder’s new collection which I missed during fashion week and also to see the new designs of August Teboul, the queens of Berlin Avant-Garde, once again. All the other designers were totally new to me and it was a little bit like a trip around the world in terms of fashion. It’s interesting to see the different styles from other countries, though not everything was really our cup of tea. We selected our favorites for you after the jump. Enjoy!

The Perfection of Augustin Teboul

The Perfection of Augustin Teboul

When visiting or speaking about Berlin Fashion Week you will hear a lot of bitching and nagging how Berlin is so not cool, totally can’t measure up with other cities, is trying to hard and doesn’t have any interesting designers here. Even though I do agree that this season seemed a bit unexciting when I first saw the schedule, I have to admit that I saw some really outstanding collections last week. Among them the ones from Patrick Mohr, Esther Perbandt, Julian Zigerli, Mads Dinesen, and Marina Hoermanseder, to name only a few. I totally disagree with the criticism of Berlin Fashion Week. We very well have interesting designers here, and even if they are not so many, the few are all the better. And as we all know it’s the quality that counts, not the quantity.

Augustin Teboul belong to the exquisit circle of designers that stand out and can absolutely measure up with internationally renowned labels. There collections are always great, but this one was exceptional I think. Maybe because for the first time they also used nude colors instead of all black. But also the pieces themselves and the styling was stunning. Enjoy some shots of the Fall/Winter 2014/15 show titled Equinoxe by Dunja Antic after the jump.

Augustin Teboul – Holy Me

Augustin Teboul – Holy Me

Last week Berlin-based avant-garde label Augustin Teboul once again proved the power of Berlin’s creative scene. In their off-site fashion show at a former supermarket they presented another set of stunning designs titled Holy Me. The collection didn’t exactly show anything new, but to be honest, the pieces are so breath-taking that it doesn’t matter much. We saw amazing crochet, we saw Swarosvski beads, lace, the finest leather and silk, beautiful head pieces and everything in elegant black. Their craftsmanship is impressive as always. The official tent would really benefit from a collection like this.

Once again I had the opportunity to take a look backstage where the team of Sebastian Professional worked their magic on the hair of the models (and last week also on my own head). Look after the jump for some behind the scenes footage and the impressive show.

Augustin Teboul – Somewhen

Augustin Teboul – Somewhen

The presentations of avant-garde duo Augustin Teboul are probably the most sought after events during Berlin Fashion Week. For a good reason, as the fashion is spectacular and easily matches up to the big names in Paris. Their new collection Somewhen was no exception. They stayed true to their signature all-black look with embroidered details, glass beads and intricate head pieces. This time they added a little twist by introducing more masculine looks with pants and more straight silhouettes. Take a look behind the scenes with the amazing hair team of Sebastian Professional as well as some favorite looks from the show presentation after the jump.

Cinéma de Mode: The Visit

Cinéma de Mode: The Visit

Earlier this year Katja shot this charming fashion film for my Designer Scouts project featuring the designs of Berlin-based labels Esther Perbandt, Von Bardonitz, Moga E Mago, Augustin Teboul and Sadak. The video was commissioned by the Fashion & Art Toronto Festival for their Focus Germany program and it was a great way for us to show the work of our Berlin designers abroad.

The film, titled The Visit, showcases a diverse range of avant-garde fashion in a very unexpected setting while making a tongue-in-cheek statement on the quirks of dating behavior of our modern society. Have a look after the jump.
