With the male models walking hand in hand down the runway which became such an iconic image of this season’s Berlin Fashion Week. Another Berlin Fashion Week is over and we are overwhelmed with impressions (and our hard drives with photos) from all the different shows and events. In the next couple of days we’ll be releasing some of the highlights of last week, starting with one of the coolest menswear shows from the official runway. We’ve followed and adored the work of Berlin-based label SADAK now for a few years, not only his fashion, but also his costumes that he did for theater pieces and exhibitions. For many years SADAK has been mostly focussing on the Asian market with his progressive and daring menswear, but since last season he has been showing in Berlin, too.
His new collection that he presented on the official runway last week brought up an interesting concept that I am sure will cause some heated discussion. Some of his outfits were inspired by Burkas and one print was depicting to characters wearing all kind of Burkas. The Burka is quite a controversial symbol from the Muslim religion and culture and I think it’s not an overstatement to say that “playing” with this symbol is in a way daring. It will certainly provoke your thoughts. Yet, it is interesting that he did what Claudio asked for last season in this article. To bring some diversity and some cultural dialogue on the runway of a usually quite commercial fashion week.
But apart from this the rest of his collection didn’t need any strong symbols as they show an immense growth of the designer in his style, it’s probably the most sophisticated collection I have seen from him. As a creative person the best thing you can do with your life is do the one thing you are most passionate about. In the case of young photographer Joseph Wolfgang Ohlert it’s obviously naked hot guys. Well, not exclusively to be fair, his contributions to our We Are Berlin photo exhibition showed a way more diverse view into his photographic world. But still, the naked hot guys are a recurring theme in his work and we would be the last people to complain about that as he’s doing that genre of photography really well. After the jump we present you his latest series of male portraits in various states of undress that he took here at the recent Berlin Fashion Week in the backstage of the show of the label Sopopular. For several seasons now the Swedish brand Odeur is showing at Berlin Fashion Week. Finally the minimalistic sportswear label had a big runway show and got the attention it actually deserved. Even though we are not really sure what to think about the styling and the combination of this year’s collection, we definitely spotted some brilliant highlight pieces as Devid mentioned already in our best of menswear article. For the German/French duo of Odély Teboul and Annelie Augustin, Berlin Fashion Week always meant more than sending models down a runway in their collections. The Woolmark Prize winners of 2014 are well known for their extravagant fashion performances. This year Augustin Teboul decided to photograph personalities that reflect their label, wearing their new Fall/Winter 2015/16 collection, which they displayed as a gallery exhibition in the gorgeous Kronprinzenpalais, along with a live show using two staircases as opposed to a runway. The photographs of various artists were taken in Berlin by Stefan Milev, and published in a magazine titled “Sounds of Black,” suitably representing their latest collection. This season, the pair drew inspiration from the personalities they photographed, captivated by the unification of their strength and fragility. They channeled this into their line while continuing to speak through the mystery of black garments, experimenting with materials, crafting knit sweaters with ornate embroidery, patchwork dresses with leather and pleats and wool coats with lacquer trim. Our photographer Olga went backstage to have a glance into the preparation process. Styled by Wella Professional their look could not have been more sophisticated. Last week saw the premiere of the brand new Berlin Alternative Fashion Week that celebrated its highlight on Saturday with two fully loaded and spectacular runway presentations showing the wild and fun side of fashion. It was really an amazing experience to see all these colorful and excentric individuals coming together. After the UdK and the Weißensee fashion shows I would like to now come to the one school that I used to study at (though not in the design department): The HTW. They don’t really have a graduates show like the other schools, but the 4th semester design students have been independantly organizing their own show for a while now. This year it was called MIDI and took place at the new Kiki Blofeld in Schöneweide, not too far from the HTW school. The HTW is mostly known to be the most technical and industry-oriented of the three public universities where you can study fashion in Berlin. This doesn’t mean that the students there are less experimental and daring with their designs. Especially in the early semesters there is a lot of room to go wild. So the 4th semester show has been once again an interesting mix of ideas and styles. We sent our contributing photographer Olga to capture some impressions for you. Enjoy!

Probably the most talked about of all the graduate shows of Berlin Fashion Week is the one from the UdK. It’s Berlin’s most experimental fashion school and one of the most renowned ones in Germany. Their graduates show is the only one that is part of the official Berlin Fashion Week and it takes place on the official runway of Mercedes-Benz. In the past years the UdK show hasn’t always been my favorite one, Weißensee and ESMOD also have some great talents that have shown amazing stuff. But this year the show was really amazing. Our guest author Alicia Kassebohm took a look behind the scenes and made some backstage photos for you that you can see after the jump. With his latest Spring/Summer collection for his label Barre Noire designer Timm Süßbrich remained true to his casual, yet elegant lineage, this time under the heading “Life is a Pool”. In double-row he presented looks with clear forms from the men’s and women’s line that one could wear on practically any occasion. In addition to an Aztec pattern one could also find Timm’s beloved flower and leopard designs – especially eye-catching in a two-piece-suit, cleverly combined with a leather midi skirt or flowing trousers. Vibrant colours together with muted nuances and soft shades of pastel made a great combination. The outfits were rounded off with shimmering details on skirts and jackets and splendid round mirror shades. To get a closer look enjoy my backstage and runway impressions after the jump.

Last week a very special event that I have anticipated a lot happened at Volksbühne Berlin on the big stage of this prestigious theatre. Esther Perbandt, one of my favorite avant-garde designers in Berlin, celebrated the 10th anniversary of her label. Knowing beforehand what she had planned for this special occasion I was super excited.
I was one of the few photographers that were installed on stage right in the middle of the show, so I saw everything up close. When the big curtain opened the light stayed off and an eclectic experimental sound choir began to sing hauntingly. The mood was set perfectly. After a while the lights came on a contemporary dancer dressed in Perbandt gave a performance in the vain of Valeska Gert, the inspiration for Esther’s new collection titled Grotesque. It was great to see fashion combined with dance in such a theatrical manner. Once the dance was over the runway show started and models came from the side walking into the audience and back. Seeing it from the back with all the lights and people in the background was really stunning and the excellent electronic music that was playing really gave me goosebumps. What a fucking cool show! And the collection was also great to look at, the best one she has done so far for sure.
Once the show was over Esther came out with her assistant with confetti rain and standing ovations. It was such a moment of glory. As if having your name spelled across one of the most impressive buildings in town isn’t already enough this show was probably the biggest highlight of her entire career. Right after the curtains closed I gave Esther a hug and she was still shaking of excitement. Very understandable! For me it was one of the best shows that I have seen in all of the years that I went to Berlin Fashion Week.
