Although we deeply love Berlins every corner, from Wassertumplatz to Grunewald, we sometimes feel the need to get away for a weekend. Especially when the temperatures are as promisingly high, as they will be the upcoming May weekends. When Angry Chicken is no longer an option, clubbing grows redundant and meeting your friends at Holzmarkt really starts to bore you – we are right here for you to get you out of your Berlin blues. We thought about 5 charming cities to visit on the weekend, that are just 2 hours or less away from Berlin and interesting to explore. So, get your bus ticket or carpool organized, we’re going to get you going!

When I read that the new theater piece Do the Right Thing by Ariel Efraim Ashbel was heavily inspired by Bauhaus I was already sold! Already I imagined the second coming of Oskar Schlemmer’s iconic Triadic Ballet. And indeed you will find a lot of references in the piece: costumes that are more objects than garments, sharp geometric shapes, bold prime colors, the grid pattern on the floor. Just like Schlemmer Ashbel questions the norms of theater of the time. His piece is so abstract, blurring the lines between performers, objects, lights, and the stage – everything seems to have an equal weight in the whole picture. While watching the piece it is all up to you to either just enjoy the almost ritualistic successions of movements in a space filled with color gradients that keep shifting back and forth, or you try to decipher the embedded details of the abstracted message of the title that you will find scattered all over the piece. Either way, you will be drawn in by powerful visuals and an even more captivating live soundtrack by Hacklander \ Hatam.

Probably the best thing about Berlin is the fact that it’s so diverse that no matter what you’re interested in, you can find a whole bunch of places here that will enable you to pursue your passion. Same goes for design – apart from such amazing examples of outstanding architectural thought like the Martin Gropius Bau or the St. Agnes Church, there’s also plenty of museums devoted to the subject, like the Bauhaus Archive or the Kunstgewerbemuseum. You can also get inspired by new initiatives of people who’re keen on creating beautiful and functional things, like the guys from Fundamental Berlin or LLot LLov. More about them and similar suggestions after the jump!

In terms of exhibitions Berlin seems to be on fire right now. Recently I have been to so many exhibitions in a row that my head is still spinning from all the impressions and inspiration I got from it. I love that Berlin never seizes to amaze me with the art that is being shown here. And yes, maybe sometimes there are a lot of bad exhibitions here, but let’s focus on the good and at the moment there is quite a lot of good in town. To give you something to do for the next couple of weeks I compiled a list of 7 big exhibition that I think you shouldn’t miss. Enjoy the art after the jump.

Alfred Arndt, Meisterdoppelhäuser in Dessau, 1926
Earlier this year I joined friends of mine on a trip to the Bauhaus in Dessau. Although I am not exactly devoted to architecture this turned out to be one of the most interesting and fun trips I ever made. We took guided tours both through the Bauhaus building and the master houses near by. And I can assure you it was really an amazing feeling to stand in the former living room of the great Wassily Kandinsky.
This Wednesday the Martin-Gropius-Bau opens the exhibition Modell Bauhaus which tells the story of one of the most important and influential schools of art and design of the last century. Details after the click.
