Partying in Berlin is a whole thing. The ritual of preparing yourself for a long weekend of non-stop techno has its own steps and rules. For the techno lovers and night creatures, it’s like a sacred ceremony of the modern days. It takes time and money that not all Berliners can’t really afford to spend. But in the techno tribe, too much is never enough. They have consecrated themselves to the Club God and they are ready to give it all. For some people it seems almost impossible to get out of the spiral of techno, that drew them in over and over again.
The young Berlin-based illustrator Josefine Aspvik has perfectly captured the absurdity of taking yourself too seriously. Her drawings are honest and witty and I’m sure you’ll recognize in them that friend that refuses to meet if not at Berghain.

We have encountered many memorable illustrations of our favorite places in Berlin. Of our go-to clubs, our favorite freaky Berlin people and Berlin’s eclectic nightlife, but we have never seen an illustrator capturing the mental showdown of it all. The meta-level of what is playing out in our minds, when we go party in all of these places, with all those weird-ass freaky people we love so much, living it all up under one sweaty roof. That’s why we were in awe, laying eyes upon Virginie Kypriotis epic depiction of Berlins nightlife for the first time. Her ability to fuse her gift of illustrating with her sensitivity to special situations creates a whole new level of nightlife illustrations that we are excited to share with you.

As far as I can tell, there is no greater threat to a child’s physical health than Berlin’s playgrounds. Don’t be fooled by their cute themes, like Underwater World (Kreuzberg), Dragonland (Friedrichshain), and Indiana Jones (Kurfürstendamm). Strewn about these playgrounds are sharp nuts and bolts, rough rope bridges, and slides of heat-inducting aluminum. But do Berliners seem to mind? Not one bit.
I’m convinced that Berlin’s playgrounds teach impressionable young Berliners to associate good times with the rusted nails, exposed wiring, and holes in the dirt. That’s why the most popular nightclubs among adult Berliners resemble decrepit playgrounds. Berliners have become masters of recreating the Lord of the Flies landscapes of their youths.
What’s interesting, however, is that this reenactment of childhood playtime doesn’t stop at shoddy construction. Here are a few other similarities I’ve noticed between playground and club fun.

If you are into House and Techno and live in Berlin, you probably don’t need any Berghain advice anymore. You most likely already call this place your living room. Anyone who’s not as experienced with the Techno Temple, but actually really wants to go, can easily get confused by all the unfamiliar names on the line up So, should you go Saturday night at 4, Sunday morning at 7, or Sunday evening around 6? Where to start if you really want to experience what all the fuzz is about? At a club where every DJ set runs for at least 4 hours and your normal party stamina lasts for about 5 hours tops, you should pick your time and DJ wisely. Gladly, there is a website for that now created by Artiom Dashinsky. On dahinsky all the data of 8 years of Berghain bookings have been put into well organized, easy-to-read statistics. So, not judging individual musical styles and only trusting in OstGut Ton booking certain artists over and over again for a reason, you should watch out for the following DJs and their time slots in the next Klubnach line-up.
