In a few days it’s already here: This year’s early edition of the Berlin Festival. It normally took place in the Fall, but with the changes the festival is going through they also moved their date into the Spring to be the first festival of the year to open the festival season. Since it’s change of location from Tempelhof to the newly founded Arena Park that includes not only the Arena itself but also a lot of the space, venues and parks around it, the festival has experienced pretty much a reboot. We are totally in favor of these changes and like that it has more of a club atmosphere now and seems a bit more true to the spirit of Berlins nightlife.

Speaking of nightlife! Absolut is one of this year’s supporter of the Berlin Festival and they know a thing or two about creative nightlife. In support of the Berlin Festival they commissioned XI Design to create five big street art murals spread over several in town in the spirit of their Absolut Nights campaign. They look super fun and are great additions to all the ones we previously reported about. After the jump you can see a making of video, some photos and you’ll get a chance to win a pair of last minute Berlin Festival tickets!

Goodbye, Tempelhof – Berlin Festival Moves to Arena Park

Goodbye, Tempelhof – Berlin Festival Moves to Arena Park

OH. MY. GOD. I’m so relieved that after all those years I can finally blurt it out without being unsupportive of Berlin’s own precious music festival: I HATED Tempelhof as the venue for the Berlin Festival. I don’t know why, I totally love Tempelhof for all the exhibitions and trade shows. But for some reason for the festival it never worked for me. Too big, to annonymous, horrible sound, and it always seemed a bit too empty to create a real buzzing atmosphere. And how inconvenient that they had to stop playing music quite early in the night because of the noise complaints from the neighbors.

So when the news broke a couple of days ago that Berlin Festival was moving to Arena Park I was actually excited about it. I’m sure people will have all sorts of ideas why this happened. I can recommend an interesting read over at our friends from Mit Vergnügen where Berlin Festival booker Stefan Lehmkuhl talks about the reasons for the move and the newly founded Arena Park area. After the jump you can get a little overview of the new festival grounds at the Spree that you can see for yourself live from September 5-7, 2014.

Berlin Festival – Discovering the Art Village

Berlin Festival – Discovering the Art Village

photo: Klub7

Every year the Berlin Festival not only brings a top notch line-up and an international crowd celebrating for two days at the former Tempelhof Airport. Representing Berlin’s spirit at its best the initiator of the Berlin Festival, Conny Opper, wanted to include urban art in the context of the music festival. This is why on a big part of the festival area every year an Art Village emerges with several kinds of highlights to give the music lovers a good time between their favourite bands. As we hear from the curator of the Art Village himself, Jan ‘Yaneq’ Kage also known for organising Party Arty ( read a whole interview over here), this edition will be even more colorful with more installations and an even more diverse art display than in previous years.

Airport Tempelhof will see a church, a pub, a circus tent for poets, a market square where art will be sold, a dance arena, as well as a swimming pool equipped with a sauna in between the hangars, The art part itself will be contributed by some of our favourite street artists from Berlin like Nomad, Various &Gold, Klub7, Bosso Fataka, Clemens Behr and many more. But to bring a fresh vibe to the creative output an open call ran before the festival to animate young artists to submit their ideas. Apart from all kinds of different street artists some very nice contemporary dancers round up the program with their perfomances. We think the Art Village is a wonderful way for Berliners and visitors to get to know the artistic subculture of this city a little better. So don’t just hang out in line for drinks and fries in between your favourite gigs or during music breaks but take your time to discover the Art Village. The Highlights of the Berlin Festival 2013

The Highlights of the Berlin Festival 2013

Björk, photo: Warren du Preez & Nick Thornton-Jones

It’s probably not going to be too much of a surprise for you which artist I will name my absolute highlight of the upcoming Berlin Festival that will take place this coming Friday and Saturday at the former Tempelhof Airport. It’s Björk. If you haven’t seen this woman live, I strongly advise you to get your tickets. She is a phenomenon and a force of nature. I’ve seen two shows of her and they both were spectacular. Forget Gaga, Miley and Madonna. This is truely art and an event not to be missed. And it’s so rare also, you really shouldn’t miss it!

Of course a lot of you will also be looking forward to see the other two main acts Pet Shop Boys and Blur. I won’t be able to see them but it’s surely going to be a smash. I’m also excited to see Ellie Goulding live, missed her concerst recently and I think she is a doll. Also on my list: My Bloody Valentive, Delphic, who are also really amazing live, Pantha du Prince, and Matias Aguayo. On the night program at Club X-Berg I’m looking forward to DJ sets by Röyksopp, who I haven’t seen for way too long, and Justice and an extra special “Disko Chinesisch” DJ battle with many local DJs organized by our fellow bloggers from Mit Vergnügen. Fun! Get into the mood with some music after the jump! Read on…

Berlin Festival 2012 Photos

The Berlin Festival and Club X-Berg last weekend was a blast and a great highlight of the Berlin Music Week. I was very proud of my animated GIF installation and the selection of party photos that I showed at the VIP area at The Berliners exhibition. And I was super happy to see Grimes, Kimbra and iamamiwhoami live, especially the later was simply amazing! I also really enjoyed new discovery Tomfoolery from Mannheim and Light Asylum where once again extraordinary, I simply love those guys! Enjoy my impression of the festival after the jump on 3 pages.
