I remember 10 years ago when I started this blog there were no points of reference out there for me. Blogs were just something totally new and we all kind of didn’t know where things would go. I certainly didn’t expect that the blog would one day become the main thing for me taking over my personal and professional life completely. I’m so grateful that I followed my instincts and interests and just went for it. It was a difficult step for me back in 2011 to quit my day job and focus fully on iHeartBerlin, but these six years that came after were more fulfilled and happy than all the time before. I learned so much in these years, it’s a lot of trial and error, testing boundaries, starting over and jumping into the unknown. But the experience and knowledge I gained is something that I never want to miss.
When I became part of Blogfabrik 3 years ago I knew that this would be a place where this knowledge and experience would someday also be transferred to other people starting projects and working in digital media. With the new digital conference Content Creation Week where me and my fellow Blogfabrikanten offer workshops, lectures, keynotes, panel talks, the time has come for me to share with the next generation. From June 18-21 the second edition will take place and I will host a workshop about brand collaborations.
To give you a bit of a taste of my first CCW workshop from 2017 that was about long-lasting and successful content I have gathered my most cherished wisdoms of 10 years of blogging.

Already 10 years ago iHeartBerlin started as Berlin’s first city blog written in English. 10 years of telling stories and anecdotes, gathering information and guide you through the messy versatility of living in the capital. We’re basically the mother of all Berlin blogs. At this point, we’d love to claim that we were the only ones with such a clever idea, but of course, that is not the case. The competition never sleeps and Berlin blogs are numerous by now. Still, we’re all united in our love for this freakin’ city. So, let’s forget about competitiveness! We want to introduce you to our favorite colleagues.

In the last couple of years many people have had a bit of an awakening in terms of food. Organic supermarkets, vegan restaurants, locally produced products and special diet catering are some of the new developments that we find ourselves surrounded with and that are replacing the old sources for food for more and more people. Some like to call it a trend, but I think that’s not what it is. It’s a change of mind, it’s the realization that the food industry is selling us shit that is bad for us and the world. It’s a development caused by education and I think for a big part we have the internet to thank for this. We no longer have to be slaves to traditions, habits and mainstream supermarket products. Because now there are food blogs, cook books, organic shops and delivery services out there that supply us with knowledge, recipes and ingredients for a better way of eating.
Ella Woodward is one of these people who are pushing the health food movement forward with her blog Deliciously Ella. She is, you could say, the British version of our own Berlin vegan expert Oh Sophia, and she too has now released an amazing cookbook that we want to introduce you to today. After the jump we will give you a little insight into Deliciously Ella with a list of 7 of her most important basic ingredients that make excellent healthy replacements for milk products, white flower, and refined sugar.

Blogs like ours, as well as those of many of our dear colleagues such as Berlin Loves You, Finding Berlin, Stil in Berlin, Mit Vergnügen, überlin, Pieces of Berlin and the Berlin newsletter Sugarhigh are all about praising Berlin in all of its glory. We think Berlin is a great city worth all the praise and we won’t listen to the haters. But they are out there, those who despise our city and like to criticize every little bit of it and the people inside it. They like to blame us Berlin bloggers for accelerating the gentrification, for bringing in “the wrong people”, for inevitable changes in the city and for the general downfall of the Western civilization. We wondered, how would their blog bookmarks look like. If all the Berlin loving blogs were doing quite the opposite, how would that look like? Check out our imaginary list of despicable Berlin blogs after the jump…

They are all such an integral part of our lives here in Berlin, but what do we really know about our street names, or more precisely about the people that our streets are named after. Berlin-based illustrator Jenny Lettow was wondering just the same and started her project dedicated to the education about street names. In her series of illustrations she researches about the history of the street names and transforms her findings into little illustrated collages. Have a look after the jump and find our about Miss Columbia, Edith Kiss and Simon Dach.

Dating is weird, fun, exciting and somewhat daring. Dating a friend accelerates all these emotions and takes it to another level. New York graphic designers Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman have been good friends for years and discovered they have entirely different behavioral patterns when it comes to seeking love and companionship. In an experiment they are currently dating each other to see how their patterns might change, influence each other and what might become of their so far platonic relationship…

In the world of popular music the comeback of long forgotten stars is quite common. Not so much in the world of blogging, though. Blogs come and blogs go. Sometimes they get abandoned for a while and get picked up again later, but rarely did we have a proper comeback that made everyone talk and turn their heads.
Jessica Weiß is one of the first fellow bloggers that I got to know and came to admire after I started iHeartBerlin five years ago. At the time she and her blog partner Julia had just started LesMads that has since become the biggest fashion blog in Germany. No matter if they liked it or not – everyone was reading it, so it was sad for many, that both girls left the Burda-run publication a few years ago one after the other. While Julia started working for Conde Nast, Jessica went to Interview Magazine. She could never really let go of blogging, even after LesMads. No surprise, as she must have been the most diligent writer in the world of fashion blogs that I knew of.
About a month ago Jessie finally had her big come-back in the blogosphere with her new fabulous website Journelles. Together with a couple of other ladies she now writes again about fashion, beauty, lifestyle and news, but this time for a more grown-up audience. The style is more slick, more sophisticated and classy, but Jessie has kept her wicked sense of humor. Tomorrow Jessie and her girls are going to celebrate the launch of Journelles with a big party (with lot’s of hip-hop music) at Picknick. A look back on how everything started for Jessie and a preview of her new looks after the jump.

Why always so fancy, you might ask yourself when you look at the streetstyle and photo blogs of Berlin. Pieces of Berlin shows the city from a different perspective. Those charming yellowish analogue photos might give you a bit of a wrong impression of our light situation here. But at least they stay true to the people that live here. My favorites after the jump.

Again and again I notice that people don’t realize this blog is in both English and Deutsch. Up in the right corner of the header you can switch languages. What might be interesting for you to know is that the articles are not the same sometimes. Instead of translating we write a different text in the corresponding language. Especially the articles in the Stories section are worth checking out in German also, while the party guides for instance are way longer and more detailed in the English version.
