As a native Istanbulite, summers always meant eluding the city as soon as possible with everlasting fear of crowds, the heatwaves and the tourists during the entire three months. Leaving the city in summer is almost a global tradition for every metropolitan, except for Berliners. We prefer to foray into foreign lands in winters, but every true Berliner knows in their heart that our city is exceptionally beautiful and sexy in the summer, and we don’t want to skip a bit of it.

Up until now, I thought that Berlin – in its authentic and unapologetic ways – is simply Berlin, no sugar added. But little did I know, that in the vast residential area of southeast Berlin, you can find a charming Adriatic idyll named New Venice. One of the ways in which Berlin is truly incomparable, is that it’s a big city you can escape without really leaving it; no long hour driving to get to an oasis of green, for they are all around the city! And the best way to enjoy nature, relax, and let all stress go? A boat ride.
For those who don’t have a way out of the city due to work, Berlin’s parks offer the perfect little escape on a daily basis: it’s the place we can cool off, forget about the city’s busyness and let nature have us as its kids again. And when these parks have a lake we can take a boat ride in, all the better! One of our options is right in the center of Berlin, with Tiergarten offering boat rides in Cafe am Neuen See! A cute little lake you can paddle your way around, wave hello to your co-paddlers, and lose yourself in the serenity of the scenery.

You only know Berlin when you have seen it from a boat! How could you enjoy a party more than on a sunny day on a boat on the Spree? The Salon Zur Wilden Renate meanwhile is a constant institution within the current Berlin club culture. Once a year they do a party on a boat. The following video of the MS Renate, how the boat is called, was made on this year’s first of May and has just been released, guided by a nice remix of 80s band Talk Talk Talk’s song It’s my life. The line-up is Margaret Dygas, Peak & Swift and Samanta Fox of the Wilde Renate crew. Enjoy.
