I experienced pure cacao for the first time last winter after ice bathing in the frozen lake of Plötzensee with the group Ice Dippers. Its founder, Jonas, served us hot cacao as we came out of the water. The first sip of pure cacao is really bitter and far away from the warm chocolate you probably experienced as a kid. Though, I enjoyed a full cup of it, not only for its taste, moreover for the mixed feeling of relaxation and stimulation it provided me. I couldn’t stop asking myself where this cacao could come from? Or if there was anything added to it. I had to ask Jonas about the story of this Moruga cacao that he had served us which goes actually way beyond our usual experience of cacao.

Whether as nourishment for your nerves, a mood-lifter or a loving gift – chocolate is a special indulgence for every occasion. Us Germans truly love chocolate among all the other sweets the most. Per person, we eat about 9 kilos of chocolate each year – preferably full milk! I love chocolate! Everyone knows that eating chocolate that is shaped in a cute way is so much more fun, than just eating a plain chocolate bar. So we are used to pleasurably bite chocolate Santa’s head off and devour yummy easter eggs, but have you heard of someone eating their favorite Berlin Kiez in chocolate? Us neither. That is why we thought this idea is brilliant!
Ray and Lena from SchokoKiez invented a tasty chocolate bar, that has the map of your favorite Kiez engraved! This uniquely shaped artisanal chocolate bar is a treat for all sweet-toothed Berlin fans. Their first SchokoKiez is the much loved Schillerkiez, to be followed by many equally famous and loved Kiez’s, such as Bergmannkiez, Boxhagener Kiez or Kollwitzkiez – just to name a few.

You know how different moments in combination with certain tastes can suddenly flood your mind with memories. Like how lemon cake reminds me of my birthdays as a child and sour candy of my yearly road trip to the baltic sea. So suddenly sweets become more than a just a little treat but develop into a well of memories and hidden associations to draw a smile from. This is what Milka wants to make its fans aware of with their new campaign.
The iconic chocolate brand invites its fans all over the world to take a bite and feel what the taste reminds them of sharing their experience on social media using the hashtag #milkaschmecktwie (Milka tastes like…). All Berlin-based Milka fans will be happy to hear, that there is a special chocolate event happening at the Mall of Berlin this weekend. Milka invites everyone to share their personal associations with the taste of their chocolate on the Wall of Inspiration, this Friday and Saturday. Feel free to stop by, take a photo at the installation or write your association on the back of a postcard to decorate the wall with! Of course, you can taste a piece of Milka chocolate before jotting down what its taste brings to mind.

Berlin is our culinary wonderland with so many interesting new places, products and projects popping up all the time that bring pleasure to our tastebuds. We teamed up with the Berlin Foodie Guide – the new culinary platform from our partner Priceless® Berlin – to discover the latest food trends and novelties for you guys. Earlier this month we visited the Berlin Food Week which was pretty much an explosion of culinary inspiration for us. Alicia got a taste of the latest gastronomy trends in Berlin at the Food Clash Canteen event. You can see her review over at the Berlin Foodie Guide. And I took a closer look at food projects that were presented at the House of Food.
The House of Food brought together some of the most innovative and exciting food entrepreneurs under one roof who presented their projects at little booths and during a series of workshops on stage. There was really a lot to discover and especially the projects from Berlin were interesting to us. There were food apps, gourmet stores, innovative new products and online shops

As the days slowly begin to be just a tiny bit warmer and blessed for another hour of sunlight, we start to think of the imminent spring. While we sure know how spring feels like, walking outside, seeing sprouting greens and flowers, hearing birds, smelling blossoms and fresh air, we are not a 100% sure about what it tastes like. Kristiane Kegelmann, a Berlin food artist, lets you discover that yourself in one of her upcoming workshops. Read on…

Our new guest author Anabel will share her Berlin discoveries with you every once in a while. Follow her stroll through the concrete jungle.
Around Christmas time this city is known to be almost void of people: most Berliners-by-choice are drawn out of the urban scapes. The few souls remaining can, for once, feel like Will Smith in “I Am Legend.” Without the zombies, of course – but with tons of golden lametta.
“Suddenly the city feels like a small, cozy village,” remarked a friend the other day; she’s a Berliner born and raised. “That’s when, after a year of silence, you call each other and say: Hey, want to get out?” Well, and then? “And then you hop outside and walk through the deserted streets together.”
What a wonderful idea. I’ll do that, too! Berlin – just for myself. But – as usual – I’ll need a mission: With peace of mind I’ll casually stroll along Schöneberg’s secret chocolate mile! Three chocolate stores and me – all by myself. Could there be a nicer Christmas gift to myself? I want to wallow in a thousand tiny colourful chocolate bits!

I don’t know. This year I don’t feel like Christmas at all. I wish I could just skip it and go straight to NYE. But obviously I can’t avoid the family responsibilities and have to go home to spend the holiday with my folks. But that won’t keep me from already making plans for AFTER Christmas to sooth me over the fest of boredom until I’m back in Berlin. Find out what I’ll be doing and what I recommend you should do as well after the jump.
