Tree and Moon by JR, courtsy of Circle Culture
Most of the time we are used to taking. Take a photo, take some time, take a piss, take the cake, take that. How about this week we do a little giving. And what giving feels better than one that includes taking also? Take a piece of art, give money to charity for instance. Swell! Take this, as well as short films, concerts, gallery openings, workshops, parties and much more, as usual after the jump!

Chicks On Speed
Oh my god, this is one of those weeks where the event guide takes me forever to finish because of the art week, Berlin Festival and Berlin Music Week taking place at the same time. That is simply an overload of events, worse than Fashion Week! Okay, let’s cut right to it. There is a massive amount of art events going on. We have selected the four main big shows as well as a few smaller ones. You should definately check out our art blog experts from Castor & Pollux and Private Curators to find out more about all of this. Look after the jump for all art, music and what-not event recommendations…

all art work: Gould
Sometimes I find Berlin absolutely amazing. Because the city gives people a chance. People who have a talent can show it here. Last year in summer I was at the graduation show of the Kunthochschule Weissensee and was allowed to let myself be inspired by a young artist named Gould and his exhibited series St. Nimmerlein. Gould stands out not just between his fellow students. The well-known artists should keep an eye on this newcomer. His saints reflect current problems based on the iconic painting of the Byzantine era. For me, a very successful and sophisticated artistic criticism of the system. More holy representations and contacts after the jump.

Kelsey Brookes
Haven’t been to the Circle Culture gallery for a while now. But next week they open a new exhibition that looks quite promissing and for me a reason to go there again. Kelsey Brookes is actually a biochemist, but with his long blonde hair he looks more like a surfer dude. His paintings are amazing explosions of colors and creatures. I love them! And he lives in San Diego which is where I used to live for a while ages ago (quite boring actually, but I loved it for the warm winters). More of his artwork and the details after the jump.

Many designers reject the idea that fashion is art. But when it comes to Haute Couture no-one will argue that this type of fashion is at least artistic. The Danish artist Helle Mardahl pushes this overlap of fields to a whole new level by creating art with the hand-craft skills of Haute Couture. On the first day of the Berlin Fashion Week on January 20 Circle Culture Gallery will open her solo exhibition Stage Power which will be an installation of canvas and sculptural work. More samples of her work and details after the jump.
