I already revealed my passion for plants the other week with my big plant guide. A side effect of it is my new-found interest in pottery, not only for its final result – beautiful ceramics – but also for the process of making it. If you hear pottery I would not blame you for not having something particularly cool in mind. But trust me, we found some really cool people in Berlin that do very unique and contemporary designs that you will love.

I also put my own crafty talents to the test and participated in a wheel throwing class at one of the studios from our guide. It was a really wonderful experience that I can warmly recommend to anyone looking for a new hobby (or a creative calling?).

But now without any further ado let me introduce you to Berlin’s coolest ceramic labels and pottery studios.

Crafty Berlin: A Glass Making Workshop

Crafty Berlin: A Glass Making Workshop

I have the utmost respect for people who are skilled in traditional crafts. I think such a large part of our work is done by computers these days and in a way that’s great, but we also loose a lot of motor skills because of this. I remember times when I was so tired of only working on the computer that I started side projects that required my hands and my brain in different ways and it felt so good to finally create something physical with my own hands.

I think a lot of people share this desire to use their skills in different ways these days because I see that traditional and even new crafts are trending right now. The rise of maker spaces, DIY projects and workshops are proof of this.

With our guide for creatives, workshop list and review of up-cycling design we already shared a few opportunities in Berlin with you were you can get your hands dirty. Today we introduce you to another one: glass molding and blowing. We were invited by Berlin Glas e.V. to try out one of their glass blowing workshops to learn more about this highly sophisticated traditional craft and even create our own simple glass objects.

Crafty Berlin: A Guide for Creatives

Crafty Berlin: A Guide for Creatives

When you live in Berlin you will probably sometimes need more than a recommendation for a restaurant, party or fashion shop. Sometimes you need practical things for projects, jobs or for your house, like where to buy this or that material, where to rent this tool, how to produce this? Especially when you are new in town these things are a little harder to find than the obvious stuff. In an effort to make this blog more than just a tourist and culture guide we have started to come out with some features that go beyond gastronomy and entertainment. So far we already released guides on networking, learning German and moving to Berlin. Today we have yet another one that will come in handy every once in a while: Practical shops and services in Berlin. Here you will find hopefully a lot of places to buy materials and tools for crafts, designing, art, home improvement. We also added a couple of places for rentals and production. Enjoy our guide and feel free to add useful things that you think are missing in the comments below.
