Stop the Music: How the Nightlife Makers of Berlin Are Dealing with the Pandemic

Stop the Music: How the Nightlife Makers of Berlin Are Dealing with the Pandemic

Berlin’s nightlife and music scene are holding their breath. And they have been doing this now for close to a year. What is usually the number one reason for people to come to Berlin from all over the world is now in a strange limbo the city has never seen before. Clubs and bars are closed – or at best turned into Covid test centers – stages are empty and all the people who normally come to these places to dance and celebrate are most likely at home – hopefully not alone.

These are unusual times, we have to completely rethink so many things. But while party kids and concert-goers will just find other ways to spend their time, it’s quite a different story for those people behind the scenes and on the DJ decks and stages of Berlin’s nightlife. They are all facing an uncertain future, many are out of work or have to start completely different careers to make a living, some even had to leave the city going back to their home countries. It’s a tragedy to think that those who build up Berlin’s reputation of having one of the most thriving and influential nightlife and music scenes are left with practically nothing during this pandemic.

Techno, Salsa & Pharmacy Windows: An Interview with Natalia Escobar

Techno, Salsa & Pharmacy Windows: An Interview with Natalia Escobar

photos: Alicia Kassebohm

A power woman with many careers: Natalia Escobar is many-faced, ‘many-named’ and many-talented’. Ultimately, when she served the first sounds to ever push Berghain’s new Säule floor through wave rhythms, drony Techno and experimental Electro a bigger audience came to realize that Miss Escobar is a Berlin force to be reckoned with. Yet, where others reach artistic capacity, the Colombian beauty seems to only really get going: Art exhibitions in various cities, making her own music under different aliases, DJ sets for Vivienne Westwood or the Techno Temple itself. If you don’t have her on your radar just yet, she should be now! Catch her DJing this Saturday at our 10 Year Anniversary and read on about Natalia’s favorite dancing spots, her beautifully simple love for Berlin, and her upcoming, first ever EP.

The Abstraction of Pop by Aérea Negrot

The Abstraction of Pop by Aérea Negrot

The question is not, what is Aérea Negrot doing, it’s more: What is she NOT doing? The Venezuelan-born, Berlin-based artistic all-rounder works in every art form that comes to mind: She sings, performs, produces, DJs… She became internationally known for her collaboration with the dance floor superpower of “Hercules and Love Affair”, but only referencing this stage of career would limit her art. Her eclecticism jumps from pure energy behind the decks, over a love for experimental productions, to a voice filling a concert hall with every tone from a high falsetto to a roaring baritone. We still remember her mesmerizing avant-garde performance at Volksbühne. Before she’s spinning our 10 Year Anniversary event this Saturday, we met up with the Queen of Versatility and talked about dirty club corners, drunk aunts, and her exciting upcoming projects.

The Ups and Downs of Being a Female DJ in Berlin

The Ups and Downs of Being a Female DJ in Berlin

Berlin is such a diverse and open minded city, yet the music industry has not been cracked by women, as I noticed the lack of female presence behind the decks.

No… I’m not a DJ… but three years in this magical city has allowed me to explore Berlin’s electronic music and club scene, through the eyes of a music enthusiast, dance floor filler, and a social party girl.

Some ladies have successfully crept there way into the music industry, as many of my best memories in this city, has been witnessing legends like Sonja Moonear, rocking it at CDV, Anja Schneider who burns Watergate down with her vibrant connection to the audience or my personal favorite, Anthea who rocks the boat at Hoppetosse.

10 Berlin-Based Female Hip Hop DJs You Should Know

The music industry has long been (and in many ways still is) a boys club, but things seem to finally become more open to women, thanks to the pioneering work of people such as The Black Madonna who’ve been especially vocal about the issues affecting women trying to become part of the music world. In Berlin, Salt + Sass is an interesting event series to check out if you want to learn more about these topics.

While our city is well-known for its electronic music scene, clubs and DJs, people tend to forget that Berlin is also home to a lively hip-hop scene, with collectives such as Broke Boys, Blunt’n’Roses, WEBOOGIE, Berries and more throwing legendary events that don’t rely on 4/4 beats. And guess what – women are representing too!

Here are 10 among our favorite Berlin-based female hip-hop DJs:

A DJ Set at the Chicken Grill – Andhim Playing at Unusual Places

A DJ Set at the Chicken Grill – Andhim Playing at Unusual Places

If Berlin has one thing to offer, it’s a unique music experience and plenty of cute DJ’s playing every night in one of the numerous clubs of the city. But if you played pretty much in every club of the town and the rest of the world you have to think of something else. Being creative and fun is definitely one of the favorite things that Simon and Tobias, better known as Andhim, love to do and of course only they could come up with the brilliant and hilarious idea to play some music at the famous Hühnerhaus 36 chicken grill next to Görlitzer Park at 8 o’clock in the morning.

Their little Hühnerhaus-Experiment is the first Episode of their new series ‘Playces’ in which they want to play pop-up sets in  special, authentic and interesting locations around the world to get in touch with the local people and their daily lives outside of the nightlife scene. And seriously, is there a better way to start their cool new project than with a 8 a.m. Sterni in their second hometown Berlin!? But watch and enjoy for yourself after the jump…

Listening to music with Dirty Doering

photo: John Michael Hoppen

When the rumour was spread in 2010 that the Bar 25 would close down for good, nobody really believed it. For all the previous years, people have been celebrating a closing party, but it was never really ending. In the next spring, the club would always open its doors again.

Things finally changed. At the open air party on October 31 on the area of what used to be the Bar 25 everybody realized, that this was the final end. Everything had been torn down: the bar, the restaurant, the circus and everything else. Not everyone had regrets about that. The Bar 25 was famous for its strict bouncers, and the hype about the club seemed more and more irritating to some of its regular guests.

Anyhow: if you are now watching the music video of Dirty Doering’s I would, you once again get the feeling of what was so extraordinary and wonderful about this place. And it is not only the pictures, it is the music in and of itself that evoke the unique atmosphere. There is maybe no other track that is deeply connected to the summer of 2010 at Bar 25. But seriously, there is no reason to get sentimental here, as the successor of the club is going to open in the middle of May…

It is quite likely that Dirty Doering will take part in that as well. Generally, his DJ sets are among the best you can experience in the Berlin night life. We talked to him about music by Althea and Donna, Nancy Sinatra, The Shins and Andhim. And of course there is the “I would” video. More after the jump.
