For our latest guide we have once again teamed up with the lovely Laura Le Marchand from Down by Retro and Neukölln Shopping Nacht to give you the best of her favorite district: Neukölln. After we extensively covered all the shops and cafes in our previous collaborations we thought we’d give you something different this time: A nightlife guide including some of the hottest bars, parties and clubs of the popular district. All of these serve as perfect spots to drink and dance after an evening full of shopping and mingling at the Neukölln Shopping Night, which goes into its 6th edition this coming Saturday (May 7, 2016). Once again all the trendy spots in various neighborhoods of Neukölln will be open until 22h and offer some kind of special or mini event in their stores. Brandstifter Berlin
Berlin is a party capital and when people party they drink alcohol. The logical consequence: a lot of alcohol is being consumed in our city. Berlin wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for some of the unique spirits that are produced here. Yes, you will probably have a hard time finding the Peppermint Schnaps Berliner Luft or the beautifully simplistic Our/Vodka Bottle somewhere outside of the city, even though they enjoy a good and very unique image around the world.

If someone asks me about the drinking habits of Germans, I would probably answer that Germans drink quite a lot, but in a fairly responsible way. We do like our beer and we do like our wine, and quite a lot of people drink exactly these two types of alcohol on a regular basis. But unless it’s Oktoberfest or a Fashion Week party with free drinks Germans tend not to get too wasted on it. At least that’s my observation here in Berlin.
I would consider myself a moderate drinker, too, proudly so. I like the social habits around drinking, like buying someone cute a drink, having drinks with friends, offering a drink to guests, toasting a special occasion with a drink. I like a good drink for the right moment, and I do like to drink a couple of them if they are really good, but I don’t enjoy the feeling of getting drunk, loosing control. I know when to stop and switch to water. The main reason for that: I don’t want anyone to think of me what I think of people that loose it, get really drunk and really embarrassing. You will end up saying something or doing something that you will later regret and it won’t be worth the fun you think you are having in that moment. And I hate hangovers…

Berlin’s nice bars and – admittedly – Don Draper have played a significant role in my interest in drinks past wine, beer and vodka soda. There are plenty of great bars and talented barkeepers in this city that can make your mouth happy when it longs for something more experimental than those “standard” liquids.
But there are nights, when I don’t feel like hanging out in a smoky bar, but want to shake and twist a little at home to whip up a great drink. I usually end up with just a glass of wine, because I neither have the energy to research what I could easily mix nor do I want to have huge bottles of ingredients rotting away on my shelves.
The Berlin-based start-up Drink Syndikat now presents the perfect solution to all those issues. Each month drink expert and founder Erik Pfauth assembles a box with high quality ingredients to a total of six drinks, which you can order directly to your house. A little booklet tells you what you can mix from those ingredients as well as the history of the drinks and origin of the spirits.
