The Privilege to Party: Bottega Veneta Criticized for Afterparty at Soho House during Lockdown

The Privilege to Party: Bottega Veneta Criticized for Afterparty at Soho House during Lockdown

With lockdown being extended every few weeks and more intense measures implemented in seemingly fruitless attempts to minimize COVID infections, we’re all looking for a way to unwind. I’m sure everyone would enjoy a normal party right now; being able to listen to music, dance, and drink with friends without constant fear of the virus. We may all crave it, but that doesn’t mean it’s fair considering our current circumstances. And it definitely doesn’t mean a party full of famous people will go unnoticed in this climate.

Italian luxury fashion house, Bottega Veneta, is facing intense criticism after hosting a fashion show presenting their Salon 02 collection in the concrete halls of Berghain, followed by an afterparty at the Soho House in Mitte on Friday. Local celebrities like Oumi Janta, Honey Dijon, and Sven Marquart were in attendance, as well as more internationally known names such as rappers Skepta, Slowthai, and Burna Boy, American designer, Virgil Abloh, and Daniel Lee, creative director of Bottega Veneta. Photos and videos of the Soho House afterparty were shared on social media, showing no social distancing, masks, or compliance with the increasingly strict lockdown measures.

A Not So Typical First Time Visit at Berghain

A Not So Typical First Time Visit at Berghain

Berlin is one of the most versatile capitals of the world when it comes to all its locations. It was fun to have been thrown in this little town with no previous knowledge – I still remember setting foot on Kottbusser Tor for the first time, entirely by chance, way more appalled than inspired, completely unaware of Kreuzberg’s undeniable magic that I’d grow addicted to.

7 Reasons why you need to check out the new Bread&Butter by Zalando

7 Reasons why you need to check out the new Bread&Butter by Zalando

The countdown has begun: In just a few days – from September 2nd till 4th to be exact – the new Bread&Butter by Zalando is happening at Arena Berlin. The consumer trend show has the theme “NOW” this year and will be celebrating what is hot in fashion, music and food. Have a look at the program and line-up now to get an idea.

The Bread&Butter has quite a long and diverse history. It started off in Cologne in 2003, but then moved to Berlin and later Barcelona for a while where it rose to international fame, before returning to Berlin to become one of the major events of Berlin Fashion Week. But as many of you have probably noticed it stopped happening a couple of seasons ago. But this was not the end, it was a necessary period of transition and reinvention. Now it’s back, rising like a phoenix from the ashes and everything is different! What happened? And why should we care? Here’s the break-down..

Esther Perbandt amplified by Raumfeld

Esther Perbandt amplified by Raumfeld

For a few years now the fashion shows by Berlin avant-garde designer Esther Perbandt have been not only about fashion but also about performance and music. For her 10th anniversary last year she had an experimental choir and an expressive dancer open her big show at the Volksbühne. The following season she herself stepped into the spotlight singing live for the first time during her fashion show. This season Esther once more created a bridge to the world of music and theater bringing in the opera singers Nadja Michael and Felix Räuber who were performing magnificently to the electronic soundscapes by Sven Helbig.

Of course such a music-driven fashion show requires a sound expert as a partner. Already for the second time Esther Perbandt has teamed up with the Berlin-based company Raumfeld that produces high quality wireless multi-room speaker systems that play music in true high fidelity thanks to the use of high-end audio components and the playback of lossless audio files. We featured the brand a while ago with an interview and store visit of their shop at Bikini Berlin and we also got to try out one of their impressive speaker sets. During the fashion show of Esther Perbandt we spotted several Raumfeld Stereo Cubes all over the place which we remember from our interview is one of their best reviewed products.

Some backstage impressions, the show review and photos of the new collection after the jump. Enjoy!

ESMOD Graduates Fashion Show 2015

ESMOD Graduates Fashion Show 2015

In a time where fashion needs to be fast, easy and sellable it’s a pretty ballsy move from the ESMOD School of Design to push their students to such eccentric and conceptual collections. Many other design school have resorted to a more market-oriented design philosophy which I can totally understand, but it’s really sad because it kind of kills the idea that fashion should be inspiring and innovative. If you just follow the pressure of the market you are not really being inspiring or innovative at all.

When I look at the new collections of the graduates from ESMOD I see only creativity, wild ideas and big dreams. This is why I enjoy the ESMOD shows more and more each year because they are such a source of entertainment and inspiration for me. What I also appreciate is the level of sophistication that has improved significantly each year. I know the school is really tough and demanding on their students, but the results are excellent. Let’s have a look at some of my favorite collections (which are almost all of them that were shown this past Saturday) and see if we can find the next Marina Hoermanseder in there somewhere.

While the womenswear line of Louis Vuitton has undergone a massive relaunch with the switch from Marc Jacobs to Nicolas Ghesquière the menswear has stayed as it is with designer Kim Jones and his contemporary and elegant style. Let’s see what he has in store for the boys at the show which starts today (January 22nd 2015) at 14:30h.

The first show we visited during the Berlin Fashion Week was the runway show of Sadak. We were really happy for our friend ‎Saša Kovačević that he got the chance to show his colorful and extravagant menswear at the Berlin Fashion Week for the first time. His style is a bold mix of archaic folklore patterns and decorations and hip hop cuts. For sure his fashion is extremely unique and worth keeping an eye on. We sent our talented photographer Olga to take some backstage photos for you. Enjoy them after the jump.

We are looking forward to see our first show of one of our Berlin favorites SADAK, of course the show of our dear friend Esther Perbandt, the man who is probably the buzziest name in the local fashion scene right now and who will be the first one to show inside of Berghain: Bobby Kolade, and we are also excited to see the new collection of Vektor. For all the fashion professionals we recommend all of these mentioned shows, so make sure to get accreditation for them. Our listing of public events you can find below.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ESMOD Berlin the private design school invited 10 of their most successful and celebrated graduates from all the ESMOD schools around the globe. Two very respected and celebrated labels based in Berlin opened the show and for them it was pretty much a home rum. I’m glad I got to see the rising star Marina Hoermanseder’s new collection which I missed during fashion week and also to see the new designs of August Teboul, the queens of Berlin Avant-Garde, once again. All the other designers were totally new to me and it was a little bit like a trip around the world in terms of fashion. It’s interesting to see the different styles from other countries, though not everything was really our cup of tea. We selected our favorites for you after the jump. Enjoy!

Berlin Alternative Fashion Week – Show Photos

Berlin Alternative Fashion Week – Show Photos

photos: Olga Khristolyubova

On Saturday the fashion scene of Berlin got a brand new playground. The Berlin Alternative Fashion Week is dedicated to those designers that like to break out of conventions, that dare to be crazy, colorful, fun and sexy and have a good sense of humor and self-ironie. It was really a pleasure both for the eyes and for the heart to see models smiling and dancing and the catwalk, women with curves, men with silver hair, boys on heels, and I don’t even know how to put that crazy spectacular finale of Andrey Bartenev into words, but it was indeed spectacular and will not be forgotten so easily by the audience. The fashion was definately fun to look at, some really impressive, some a bit more on the trashy side, but really always entertaining. But have a look for yourself after the jump where we have some a lot of amazing impressions by our talented contributing photographer Olga Khristolyubova. Enjoy!
