It’s time to win something amazing again here on I HEART BERLIN because it’s your Lucky Thursday! In anticipation of the upcoming Berlin Fashion Week we are raffling off tickets for one of the biggest highlights of the season: The Esther Perbandt 10th Anniversary fashion show and after party at Volksbühne.
Esther was born and raised in Berlin, but moved to Moscow and Paris in the course of her education and practical experience in the fashion world. When she returned to Berlin in 2003 she started her own, self-titled label and in the following 10 years became one of the most important local avant-garde designers with her own flagship store in Mitte and retailers all over the world.
Her new collection titled Grotesque is inspired by dancer and performance artist Valeska Gert who was famous for her edgy, provocative and androgynous style in the Golden Twenties of Berlin which ties in perfectly with the elegant, yet unconventional style of Esther’s label that often plays with gender roles in a sophisticated manner.

Tomorrow the second Live Networking for Fashion & Art event will take place in Berlin at Platoon Kunsthalle presenting the designers JULIAANDBEN, Ivan Man, Twisted Talents, Dandie Zimmermanm, Isabel Stasinski, Appollo Krieg, Perlensäue and Marina Ballerina. When I researched all of these designers I was pleasantly surprised because except for the first two I didnt know any of them and almost all of them are really cool. So I’m extra excited for tomorrows shows. Apart from the shows there will also be some extra goodies, such as nail art by The Shit Shop, a photobooth by Canon, hair styling by Persona Non Grata, and art by Paul Vogeler.
To get you in the mood I want to show you the new Spring/Summer 2014 collection of one of my favorite labels from Berlin: JULIAANDBEN. This might very well be the best collection that designer Julia Heuse has ever done. She came up with some really great new pieces while still maintaining her iconic artsy and grungey style. The collection is very versatile with a good mix of very wearable and clean pieces and some outstanding eyecatchers. I love it! More of it after the jump.

iHeartBerlin favorite and Designer Scouts alumn Franzsika Michael is headlining an interesting fashion event that is going to happen on Saturday afternoon here in Berlin with a fashion show of her new Spring/Summer 2014 collection. The guys from Bloggers Meltingpot have put together a big program of shows, presentations and performances with 10 designers and even more artists, performers and creatives. But the Live Networking for Fashion & Art event is not only about the shows, as the name suggests it’s a networking platform for creatives and professionals of the scene to interact with each other and form new collaborations. Patrick Mohr is probably not the type of label that you would get in a Kaufhaus. Nonetheless the excentric designer from Munich chose a former department store as the venue for his latest fashion presentation. I must say, I am so glad that after a few seasons of buying into the whole “I need to be commercial and boring to be successful in Germany” myth Patrick has return to his crazy, experimental and crafty roots creating fashion that is interesting and complex with presentations that are thought-provoking and entertaining. This time he once again showed his designs on the bodies of the types of models that would normally not set foot onto a runway of Fashion Week: Body builders, disabled people, and other types that don’t fit the typical beauty standards of our society. This time it felt even less like a shock effect but more like a statement and we salut to that: Everyone is beautiful in their own way. The impressions of a great show after the jump.

Last week Berlin-based avant-garde label Augustin Teboul once again proved the power of Berlin’s creative scene. In their off-site fashion show at a former supermarket they presented another set of stunning designs titled Holy Me. The collection didn’t exactly show anything new, but to be honest, the pieces are so breath-taking that it doesn’t matter much. We saw amazing crochet, we saw Swarosvski beads, lace, the finest leather and silk, beautiful head pieces and everything in elegant black. Their craftsmanship is impressive as always. The official tent would really benefit from a collection like this.
Once again I had the opportunity to take a look backstage where the team of Sebastian Professional worked their magic on the hair of the models (and last week also on my own head). Look after the jump for some behind the scenes footage and the impressive show.

About a week ago our beloved capital was graced with a visit by legendary Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. If you haven’t heard of him before (shame on you!) he is one of the most groundbreaking designers of our time and had a very strong impact on the aesthetic of avant-garde fashion as we know it today. He established his label over 30 years ago, has grown his brand into several sublabels and also raised the profile of quite a number of big commercial brands such as adidas (he designs the Y-3 line), Hermès and Madarina Duck with his design collaborations.
In Berlin he presented a magnificent retrospective fashion show that featured his designs from the last 32 years, he gave a talk at Soho house and revealed a visual dialogue with the art space MADE. I was lucky to be a guest at the first and third of these three special events and I am glad to have gotten such a close insight into the work and mind of this man who is so influential for this genre of fashion that I also dedicate a lot of my time and passion to in the last couple of years. On Monday Berlin school of design ESMOD will be hosting their annual St. Catherine Charity Fashion Show at the Nikolaisaal in Potsdam (near Berlin). The most extravagant and amazing designs from the students of the school will be presented on the runway, all the proceeds of the evening will be donated to a charity organization helping women in need.
For this occasion our Cinéma de Mode is screening The WUU Project, a brand new fashion film by Daniela Franceschini who is a graduate from the ESMOD’s new English language Master Class “Sustainability in Fashion”. It was shot by Carlos Luque and features one of my favorite Berlin-based models: the wonderful Rosa. Enjoy the film after the jump and visit the big charity fashion show of the ESMOD on Monday.

Berlin Film Society is hosting a screening of Fellini’s cult classic La Dolce Vita with a vary interesting introductory program. Swedish film director Emilio El-Lauren is hosting a fashion show by excentric accessory label Moga E Mago, that iHeartBerlin readers should be well aware of as we did quite a few events with them in the past here in Berlin.
