Film and theater premieres are so exciting because you get the chance to see the team behind a production. Therefore we are really happy that we had the great honor to welcome the director of the film Wild Tales Damian Szifron at our Cocktail & Movie Night together with the Staatsoper Berlin.
He is currently rehearsing his first opera production at the Staatsoper: Samson et Dalila. In the course of this, we have planned this event in cooperation with the Staatsoper in order to be able to also show his film work in the opera. The team of Russian Standard and Sierra Milenario has designed two cocktails that embody the Latin American temperament and the incredible energy of the film.

Annually the weeks leading up to Berlinale turn into a stress test. How well can I maneuver through the seemingly countless names of directors? How optimal can I structure my screening schedule? Will I manage to not only realize on day four that a film with my favorite actor screened on day one?
This year is no exception to this emotional roller-coaster. However due to extended internet research, reading of press newsletters and countless hours spent on the Berlinale website, I’m fairly confident Ive got thinks figured out. I nevertheless share my 10 highlights only with the cautious warning that these are not complete or final and definitely my personal taste. Each film can be your personal cinematic supernova, so head to Potsdamer Platz and into the dark. It’ll be worth it …

„She was just the way she was.“
A city like Berlin has its very own sagas. Every day, thousands of hearts are broken and hundreds of souls connect. The city presents the perfect scenery, serving as a stage for all the drama emerging in it.
Together with producers Fabian Gasmia and Henning Kamm film maker Erik Schmitt created an adorable short movie that poses the question: What defines the soul of a city? Schmitt answers it partly in his short film „Rhino Full Trottle“ with a classic love story, made in Berlin. He loves her, she needs to leave soon, he loves her anyway. Berlin takes up the role of the third protagonist here. With a striking love for details and powerful, little stop motion animations, the love displayed is not only between Vicky (played by Marleen Lohse) and Bruno (played by Tino Mewes) but mostly to Berlin. „Rhino Full Trottle“ is full of affection, charm and soul – just like the city itself can be. I feel like we’ve all been in the shoes of Bruno, secretly loving someone, but also in Vicky’s, unaware of the fact that someone is hurt by our own carelessness.
„She was just the way she was“, says Bruno and sums up the essence of his true love Vicky. And also Berlin. If you have 15 minutes of time on your hand, please make sure to watch the short movie below. You can turn on English subtitles in the settings in the bottom.

Some people come to Berlin to do an internship in a PR agency, others come to start their own fashion label, some come to study psychology, others come to just party all weekend, And than there are those who come to play guitare music in the street – naked, with a horse mask. Carl Tomich from Australia definately belongs to the later group and if you were lucky enough you might have caught one of his naked performances here in the city back in the summer or even recently when the weather was decent, as many eager Instagramers captured.
While it is true that the naked horse (or #TheNeighKidHorse as he calls himself more correctly) is making music in the streets he is not actually a musician, but a journalist and film maker and his performances are not really meant to be his choice of lifestyle but and experiment and form of promotion for a documentary called Busking for Berlin that he shot here to shed some light on the lives of some of the street musicians of Berlin and their stories. Enjoy the film and more info after the jump.

Small film festivals tend to be overlooked. It begins with the Hollywood stars who don’t attend that leads to the press that doesn’t care and all of a sudden most of the city dwellers don’t even know it even happened. However small festivals tend to have a great atmosphere, fabulous films and a much sharper focus, so you can more easily decide if it’s for you or not. Small festivals offer the exchange with like-minded people, the artists and usually you leave those with a much better experience than the big ones. Also you’ll get to see films you might never otherwise. Why am I telling you this? Well, the XPOSED International Queer Film Festival is going into it’s 9th edition this year and it is one of those small festivals Berlin has to offer. Unfortunately you probably won’t hear everyone in Berlin talking about it, but now you know and should spread the word and GO WATCH their amazing program at Moviemento in Kreuzberg. More about it after the jump.
