Exploring Berlin: A Guide To Schöneberg

Exploring Berlin: A Guide To Schöneberg

Schöneberg, oh Schöneberg. You are underestimated. Although you have so much to offer! The late and beloved David Bowie wasn’t the only one to notice your charm, but also numerous artists such as Iggy Pop and Klaus Kinski lived in your hemisphere. There’s something about you, something mature and unagitated but still exciting. Something that feels like home yet still comes up with surprises of the unknown.

Founded as a tiny village and first documented in 1264 (that’s… a long time ago), Schöneberg was merged in 2001 with the adjacent district Tempelhof and is now called: Tempelhof-Schöneberg. We will focus on the Schöneberg-part of the district today, presenting you the best options to eat & drink, see some art, spend some leisure time in the most beautiful spots and learn something about the history of the ‘beautiful mountain’ aka Schöneberg.

FYI: Even though the district is located at a quite elevated spot, the name ‘Schöneberg’ that includes the ‘mountain-theme’ is rather a wishful-thinking-name than a geographically correct one. But who cares, right? Let’s start with our guide to Schöneberg!

The Charity Fleamarket

The Charity Fleamarket

This coming Sunday we can all do something for a good cause by doing what we are going to do this month anyway: Shopping! It’s Christmas and all of your friends and family are in need of a present. But imagine with your shopping you would automatically help the victims of the catastrophy in the Philippines or save a homeless person in Berlin from freeze to death in the cold Winter.

Yes, this is not a theory: If you shop at the Charity Fleamarket that takes place on Sunday December 8th at Where is Jesus at Wrangelstr. 57 ALL of your money spent will be donated to the Kälte Nothilfe and to an first aid organization in the Philippines. This is organized by a group of girls who all volunteer to gather and sell donated products for this event and 100% of the proceeds will be used for charity. A lot of agencies, labels and people (including myself) have donated vintage fashion and brand new products for the market. So there is something for everyone! Go and shop from 12-19h. The flyer with more details and a video from last year’s Charity Fleamarket after the jump.

Help the Prinzessinnengärten to win!

Kreuzbörg Flowmarkt at Prinzessinnengärten

The Prinzessinengärten at Berlin Moritzplatz are an amazing place with a genious and innovative idea behind it. Using mobile vegetable patches, they transformed a 6,000 m² wasteland in the centre of Berlin into an organic urban farm. They also has several beehives and a cafe serving food made from the produce grown in the garden. Alongside its ecological aims, the project intends to offer local residents a new kind of urban space, where they can meet, work and relax together having several events there like concerts, dinners or even a fleamarket. We always liked the project and are now happy to support it. They already won the smart future mind award last year here in Berlin and are now in the run for the smart future minds community award which will support the project in the next year. Vote for them here and support our local heroes. After the jump more pictures of our trip to the Kreuzbörg Flowmarkt taking place at the Prinzessinengärten some weeks ago.

We have two very interesting photography exhibitions opening by Berlin-based talents Sascha Weidner and Maxime Ballesteros, and the rest of the week is dominated by very participative events: Sew a dress at a DIY party, climb into an interactive installation at an indie-game party, prepare an amazing dish at a cooking party, and make your own costume for a masked ball. This and much more after the jump.

Did the photos from Myanmar get you in the right mood for your next vacation? They sure did for me! If you are already dreaming about your next trip, but don’t really know how to finance it, then you should look around your wardrobe and appartment and see what pieces of all your lovely belongings could be transformed into vacation money. Then book a booth at the next Travelettes Fleamarket that will take place on Sunday May 8th and your flight funding is practically secured. More details after the jump.
