When the entire nightlife pressed the pause button a few months ago, we really had to completely rethink how we experience Berlin. This was especially noticeable to us when we were putting together our event listings. All of a sudden the calendar was empty, then slowly it filled up again with streaming events, and eventually, IRL events returned, but not in the same way as before.
The sound installation “Eleven Songs” that happened at Halle am Berghain a few weeks ago was one of these events that stood out: Through its iconic venue it bridged the longing for a return of the club culture and our craving for a cultural and artistic experience. It was, as to be expected, a huge success.

In the last decades, Berlin’s international scene has grown widely and multiple talents from different backgrounds enriched the cultural landscape of the city. One of those fresh talents had her Berlin stage debut last weekend and we are more than impressed.
Choreographer Kiani del Valle showed her first performance piece “Las Casas Invisibles” (Spanish for the invisible houses) with her newly formed KDV Dance Ensemble at the spectacular Funkhaus concert stage.
The place which usually hosts concerts and festivals for avant-garde and contemporary electronic music was the perfect setting for the interdisciplinary performance. With a collective of 10 incredibly strong dancers, she created an immersive story that floated seamlessly from childhood memories into the experience of migration, police brutality and longing for connection.

Berlin’s vibrant life is obviously powered by its colorful characters, but it really wouldn’t the same without some of the unique event locations that can be found all around town. In all of the years that I have been living in Berlin the city never ceases to surprise me with new incredible places, no matter if they are incredible buildings, stunning interiors, unusual locations or innovative concepts. When people who are planning to come to Berlin or are already here but want to experience something new, they often ask me about places like that and where they can find them. My first reaction is always that I am missing the right answers because all the places are so familiar to me, after 18 years, what can truly still surprise me. But then I think back to the moments when I first discovered those incredible places, sometimes even before I had seen pictures of them, and how they made me feel. With this memory in mind I curated the following list of amazing places that will take you by surprise when you first visit them. Our readers who are more familiar with the city might know a lot of them already, but maybe we manage to have at least a couple that you don’t know yet.

On the weekend we set back the daylight saving time to the normal time which means we’ve lost a fair share of daylight for the remainder of the year. To make up for this and not let the darkness win we are in need for some artificial light! Being a lamp enthusiast (and occasional lamp builder) this article was long overdue, but now here it is: A collection of some of the most original lamps that you can get here in Berlin. Enjoy my selection after the jump. May some of these beauties brighten your dark winter days that are coming up…

On Saturday I visited the magnificent Funkhaus Nalepastraße to see the exhibition opening of the group show Arcadia Unbound curated by four Berlin-based artists Janine Eggert, Sibylle Jazra, Marte Kiessling and Christopher Sage. The project is pretty much in the spirit of the fabulous show Ngoro Ngoro during Gallery Weekend as it’s independently organized by artists and not by gallery owners.
With the Funkhaus they found a venue that is truly stunning looking, but also so dominant in its appearance that it’s really challenging to show art here without the place itself being a distraction. But I think they have mastered this quite successfully. The exhibition is a true highlight and a good introduction into the Berlin Art Week that will start later this week. You can still see Arcadia Unbound at Funkhaus from Wednesday September 16 til Sunday September 20, 2015, from 14-18h. You can best reach Funkhaus from Ostkreuz by bike (15 min) or by tram. After the jump a few impressions.

The Funkhaus Berlin is an old GDR institution where all the recordings for the public radio and TV stations took place. It’s a massive and impressive building directly at the Spree near Rummelsburg. The place is absolutely stunning to look at, both from the inside and outside. Nowadays the Funkhaus is home to many artists and musicians who have their studios and rehearsal spaces in there. You can actually rent spaces in all imaginable sizes for a really moderate price there, and it’s a really inspiring atmosphere there. Sometimes they host open house days, special events and exhibitions so you have the chance to go inside and see the great space turned into a gallery.
This coming weekend “A Happening” will combine music, art and the space. If that’s not a great plan for the weekend I don’t know what is! More about it after the jump.

Last week I went on a little trip to the former GDR Funkhaus at Nalepastraße with Claudio and Gina. We wanted to take a look at this amazing location and also check out the opening of the group show Broadcast. Our visit turned out to be a trip through art wonderland. In addition to the group exhibition there was also an open studio night at many of the small artist studios that are now inside the Funkhaus (many empty rooms can still be rented for cheap). There was a great creative energy in the air in the hallways of the old broadcast building. With all the musician and artist studios this almost felt like a big creative commune. Have a look after the jump at our impressions, this time in the form of Instagrams.
