Last night the annual DMY Festival for young product design opened its exhibition at the Tempelhof Airport and we took the opportunity to pay a visit and take some photos for you. There was some great designs and ideas there to be found, my favorites being the clever cardboard furniture by Room in a Box, the amazing Street Food Kitchen by Anna Liesch (would be so practical for the Bite Club), the Veener Shoes by Tobias Jänecke, as well as the Snego play set by the students of the Lund Universaty. One thing that is really amazing in this city: The options for design are limitless. Yes, we have a lot of mass produced products here as well, but we also have countless shops and labels that sell very individualistic and unique designs. This does not only apply for fashion, but also for interior and product design. Especially here in Mitte we have great shops, one of them being the showroom of sustainable design label Supergrau.
Their line of products has some truely beautiful and original pieces, all of them made of high quality, sustainable materials such as stainless steel and local woods. I personally love their lamp collection Furore that comes as a table lamp and a ceiling lamp in a variety of colors and materials. I’m also a big fan of the high chair Love15 that is like a slick designer version of the ones in front of the St. Oberholz. This coming Thursday you will have a great opportunity to take a closer look at the Supergrau products at their Christmas party in their showroom at Gartenstraße in Mitte. Those of you who follow me on Instagram might have noticed that I was in Madrid recently visiting friends of mine and maybe you even saw a couple of the shots I took in their beautiful apartment. When I stepped into their new living room I felt like I entered a special kind of wonderland – a grown-up’s playhouse, full of treasures and magical creatures. I was instantly in love with this place. My friends have a very, let’s say, playful taste in interior design and decoration.
Seeing this place made me once again realize how much a living room reflects on the character of a person, their tastes, their sense of humor, their meticulousness (or the opposite of it). We create an urban space around us as an extension of ourselves. It’s almost like a different kind of arrangement of the same things that make up our personalities. We take a big box – a room – and customize it to our own standard and comfort.
My urban living room, the new Facebook photo contest by mobility brand smart, tries to capture exactly that: How do we design and shape the urban space around us, how does our urban living room look like? With their recent collaboration with Danish brand BoConcept smart has already successfully ventured into the field of interior design bringing out a collection of furniture and home accessories that combine the style and expertise of both companies. On Thursday the renowned Danish design furniture label BoConcept celebrated the launch of their design collaboration with smart in their flagship store at Friedrichstraße. For the collaboration they did not only design their own cute little smart car with special materials such as fine leather, felt and wood, they also came out with a range of individualistic, sustainable and high-end design products including furniture and home accessories. I especially fell in love with the wooden clocks that have the same shape as the instruments of the car’s dashboard. Love them! Vintage Galore is a brand new vintage furniture store at Sanderstraße a few doors down from Sing Blackbird. It’s not like any of those cramped and dusty second hand furniture shops with cheap knock-offs and granny’s old stuff. It feels more like a high-end design boutique. The specialty here are 60s Scandinavian design furniture in teak wood and lamps. They also have a small but great vintage clothes section with a lot of menswear. The amazing thing about the store is the quality of the products. Many of them are refurbished by hand which makes them look as good as new. Owner Erik told me, that teak wood pieces from the 60s have always been a passion for him and with this store he turned his hobby into a profession. Well done! Achteinhalb has been around now for quite a few years with numerous pop-up stores and events in Berlin and other German cities. In the fall of 2010 they opened their first long-term store at Kollwitzstraße in Prenzlauer Berg. For one year they sold the best of Berlin fashion including labels we love such as Esther Perbandt, JULIAANDBEN, Franzius, Blame, Reality Studio and many more.
Earlier this year the shop changed their concept back to their original time of 8 1/2 weeks with their new Living Concept. Instead of fashion they are now selling a well curated selection of furniture and home accessories. The 8 1/2 weeks are coming to an end this week, so it’s time to take your chance to pay the store that has been host to a series of iHeartBerlin and Designer Scouts events in the past year a final visit.
We will surely miss the cosy place at Prenzlauer Berg and are already anticipating future projects of the makers of Achteinhalb. More photos and details after the jump.

I’m not entirly sure if a wooden notebook case is all that practical, but it sure as hell looks good! This wonderful design object is a product of Berlin-based interior and furniture designer Rainer Spehl who will open his new exhibition tomorrow at the A.D.Deertz shop at Kastanienallee as a part of the DMY Shop Day. Spehl has not only furnished this store but also other Berlin places like the well known boutiques Akif and Konk. You might also have stumbled across his benches and tables down the U-Bahnhof Alexanderplatz. More photos of his work and details about the exhibition after the jump.
