Sezzession – Art entering a GDR Sport Center

Sezzession – Art entering a GDR Sport Center

painting: Nicolai Huch

Once upon a time in the year 1981, when Berlin was still divided into two halves, a glamourous sport and fun paradise in Friedrichshain opened its doors for all kind of activities. Now more then 20 years later the SEZ is only half-used as a place for sports. The other half of the now vacant building is only used temporarily – mostly for exhibitions.

Last weekend 45 artists working in the Uferstudios brought their canvases from Wedding to the SEZ to open a spectacular showcase called Sezzession. This one-of-a-kind experience between experimental art and old GDR architecture was my personal highlight of the art week so far. But don’t worry, you can still check out the exhibition until the October 13, 2013. See after the jump more artworks and the details.

One thing that always annoys and bores me about (modern) art is a lack of humor. In my opinion, there are too few exceptions like Maurizio Cattelan. In Germany, it was most importantly Martin Kippenberger who shook things up in the art world. Right now, Hamburger Bahnhof presents an extensive exhibition of his work. Get more information and check out a preview after the jump.

West(en) Side Story at Ballhaus Ost

West(en) Side Story at Ballhaus Ost

Three young women go West in the theater play Nach Westen, nach Westen by Holle Münster at Ballhaus Ost. Their struggle with their GDR past and West German society is conceptualized in a short and very beautiful piece. The stage as a catwalk of family tragedies does not lack funny and energetic surprises created by visionaire Thea Axthelm Hoffmann. Once again I realize how chauvinistic society presently  is in any workfield – even in arts and cultures. That is why I am very glad to recommend a little masterwork by a creative female team. Good job girls!  Date, time, address and more stage photos after the jump.
