Catalogue of Disguise: Fashion and Dance Excellence at TRAUMA

Catalogue of Disguise: Fashion and Dance Excellence at TRAUMA

If you want to experience a truly innovative presentation of cutting-edge fashion in Berlin you need to keep an eye out for the events at TRAUMABARUNDKINO. The hidden place in Moabit has put out a series of fashion events since the last November that combines contemporary dance with fashion. Of course, there have been attempts at blending dance with fashion elsewhere before, but trust me, never have they been as cool as at TRAUMA.

Following the success of Now You May Tell That I Have Been Seen By You the fashion department of TRAUMA lead by Tanja Bombach has now put out a second event titled Catalogue of Disguise showcasing designs by Olga Khristolyubova, Aleksndru Plesco, and Tanja herself. With an impressive choreography by Franka Marlene Foth that I could easily see at the theatres in Berlin and a stellar cast of dancers the piece was a big advancement of the already pretty amazing first event. Every little detail was perfect from the designs to the performance, the hair and make-up, music and light. It’s so rare you see something as complex as this brought to perfection in each of its aspects. Congratulations to the entire team. I draw my hat.

There are no further words that will do this level of excellence any justice, so I decide to let my photo and GIF impressions speak instead.

Der Palast – A Dance Competition About Gentrification

Der Palast – A Dance Competition About Gentrification

photos: Vismante Ruzgaite, GIFs: Frank R. Schröder.

Finding a nice apartment in Berlin has become a serious hustle. You have to compete with lots of other people for a little one-bedroom apartment for 800 Euros in Wedding – if you are lucky. All these other people have better jobs, more savings and a much more stable personality than you in stress situations. But imagine that instead of having to prove your financial security you would need to partake in a dance competition in front of your landlord to get your dream apartment in Berlin?

In the newest piece by Costanza Macras “Der Palast” that premiered earlier this month at Volksbühne this absurd scenario becomes a reality. Several couples compete in a reality show competition that reminded me of Dancing with the Stars. Of course, the whole show is not linear but more like a mosaic of all kind of little stories, dance episodes, and funny group scenes.

A Black Unicorn Halloween

A Black Unicorn Halloween

Sponsored

Yes, Halloween is around the corner. A weird festivity we love to hate, nothing but another reason to look bizarre and have 5 drinks too many. We cannot relate. We aren’t cheap, we aren’t trashy, we’re intricately, mysteriously fabulous! We are missing that occasion that represents us. *sigh* Where’s the candy? We need tasteful, sugary distractions. But, when we reach into that lil’ limited edition bag from wonderland and get out one of these lil delicious gems – we stop. What is this in our hands? It has the form of … a lil’ black unicorn, by Katjes, all veggie!

The Sensual Touch of Light and Concrete

The Sensual Touch of Light and Concrete

Today we would like to introduce you to the work of visual artist duo Schall & Schnabel. They moved in with us at Blogfabrik last year and ever since we always enjoyed watching them work over their shoulders. Just like us they have a thing for animated GIFs. With their photo work they always like to play around with distortion, lights and non-digital effects. Their new “concrete series” actually combines both real-life and digital effects that look absolutely stunning. With the series they found a very contemporary version of classic nudes, twisting the bodies, overlaying the skin with harsh concrete structures, playing around with lights that are broken through prisms. It’s really a wonderful aesthetic that invents its very own sensuality.

After the jump you’ll get an exclusive view with a couple of animated GIFs. Enjoy!

GIF me Cute: Animated Creatures all over Berlin

GIF me Cute: Animated Creatures all over Berlin

GIFs: Yoyo the Ricecorpse

Sometimes I think that I have the attention span of a GIF. The upside of this daily struggle of working with the internet is that anything that fits into a short loop can catch my attention really good. No wonder I am better at looking at GIFs than reading, let alone writing any text. Unfortunately, looking at GIFs doesn’t pay the bills (even though I cannot be sure that it might become a sustainable profession in the future, as the future is unknown and full of mysteries).

Speaking of looking at GIFs, I recently stumbled upon a really interesting GIF series that I wanted to share with you. The London-based artist running by the unorthodox name Yoyo the Ricecorpse visited Berlin a while ago. When she was here, not only did she take some pictures, but also created unique illustrations of all kinds of animated creatures. Inspired by Japanese anime and the classic Game Boy game Pokemon, her funny-moving animals do all sorts of crazy things all over Berlin. Maybe it is not everyone’s cup of tea to see our so-called rough and dirty city overwhelmed by all this pink Japanese cuteness, but for a change I quite like it.

If you like what Yoyo does, you should also check out the animations she did in the streets of Paris and Tokyo. More funny and cute GIFs after the jump.

Berlin Wall: A Data Visualization

Berlin Wall: A Data Visualization

artwork: Erdal Inci

In these agitated times it’s important to stay open, united and tear down walls. This is exactly what Turkish new media artist Erdal Inci did. The Berlin wall and its remains are an important piece of the collective memory of the capital which is why Inci took an attempt to visualize the Berlin wall in another way than usual. While maybe you can think of its length, you can’t imagine the whole extent. There were multiple versions of the Berlin wall in the time of the GDR and from 1975 to 1980 the fourth generation wall was finalized. About 45.000 sections of concrete, shaped in a L-form were used to form “Grenzmauer 75”. To grasp its whole size, Inci created a computer-generated 3D model where he put all wall segments into one big segment, letting them fall to the ground.
Watch the bricks go down after the jump. Read on…

GIF-Love: Berlin in Motion by Erdal Inci

Maybe some of you remember our first curated exhibition with animated Gifs called GIF.ME.BERLIN. Not just since then we were big fans of animated GIFs and can’t have enough of them. So it is probably no surprise for you that we want to share with you this nice discovery. The Turkish artist Erdal Inci creates interesting video art with looping effects. On his Tumblr you can look at some of his artwork transformed into a GIFs. Recently he payed a little visit to Berlin and used our beloved city as a frame work for some new art. The results, moving phantoms all over Berlin, are quite impressive. After the jump we have some of his looping GIF magic for you.
UPDATE: Inci just released a wonderful GIF from the Lichtgrenze-Celebrations you have to check out.

Lucky Thursday: Win Ultra Light Downs by Uniqlo

Lucky Thursday: Win Ultra Light Downs by Uniqlo

Today we have a special treat for you. If you have been in Berlin the last couple of days you might have noticed the one undeniable truth: Winter is knocking on our doors sending Autumn as gentle reminder. And as lovely some snow activities might be. Running around town with tons of clothes on heavy and bulky enough to make you feel like the hunchback of Notre Dame (even far away from Paris) does not make Winter the favorite season of the Berliners. But this year we found a clever solutions that might make you reconsider your Winter aversion.

Together with Japanese ultra minimalistic high-tech fashion brand Uniqlo we are giving away 10 Ultra Light Downs. This brand new fashion innovation is the perfect solution for the upcoming Berlin Winter. Thanks to a special new technology the jackets, vest, parkas and many more items are super light still being very warm. The silhouette is so sleek and lightweight, it can be worn under another layer. We had the chance to test them and are super impressed by its several features. Especially for biking I can recommend the vest to keep you warm without putting any additional weight on you.

This Saturday we are teaming with Uniqlo and host a special Ultra Light Down photo booth in front of their store at Tauentzienstraße. To find out what we have planned for you and how to win one of these special products read on after the jump.

UPDATE: The winners are picked. Check out the pictures from the event.

The Story of a Shoe: Addiction – Part 2

The Story of a Shoe: Addiction – Part 2

Last week I teased you about a story about a shoe that I’m going to tell you. And while the video I started with could be considered the teaser trailer of it, this new part of the story is somehow like a prolog.

I guess I could also just start by showing you that special shoe that this is all about. But that would not explain why I’m making such a big deal about it. You should know, Shoes and I, we go way back. In fact, shoes are probably the one element of human’s wardrobe that I am the most passionate about. I have no idea why, but when it comes to shoes I can’t contain myself. But of course not just any ordinary shoe. My specialty are very unique and extravagant shoes. You know how it is a bit more complicated for guys to dress in an interesting way as the variety of outstanding clothes in shops is just not the same as for girls. And even if I’m lucky to come by some really fancy amazing stuff for guys, very often the pieces I like the most simply don’t suit me well.

But for some reason one thing always works on me: crazy shoes. And boy do I go crazy on those! To give you an idea what I’m talking about you should head over the jump and check out my animated GIF Shoe Parade.
