The music industry has long been (and in many ways still is) a boys club, but things seem to finally become more open to women, thanks to the pioneering work of people such as The Black Madonna who’ve been especially vocal about the issues affecting women trying to become part of the music world. In Berlin, Salt + Sass is an interesting event series to check out if you want to learn more about these topics.

While our city is well-known for its electronic music scene, clubs and DJs, people tend to forget that Berlin is also home to a lively hip-hop scene, with collectives such as Broke Boys, Blunt’n’Roses, WEBOOGIE, Berries and more throwing legendary events that don’t rely on 4/4 beats. And guess what – women are representing too!

Here are 10 among our favorite Berlin-based female hip-hop DJs:

Following the Dancing Street Art Girls in Berlin

Following the Dancing Street Art Girls in Berlin

The dancing confetti girls first crossed our paths in Paris and London – but ever since they seem to have followed us back home to Berlin. There is a lot of street art in Berlin, but these girls who are often accompanied by the slogan It’s time to dance do stand out to us. Why? Because we feel them so very deeply and they represent an important part of Berlin: Dancing, moving, being free, wild and partying. And the best parties obviously need a lot of confetti.

The different confetti covered pastings of the dancing girls were created by the French street artist SOBR and even though his project ‘It’s time to dance’ has been going on for a while and it seems like he hasn’t made new ones for a while, a lot of the enthusiastic dancers are still around. Pay attention, once you’ve spotted the dancing girls, they will follow you around town. Here are the girls, we found while strolling around our neighborhood…

Girls and their Bikes in Berlin – A Portrait Series

Girls and their Bikes in Berlin – A Portrait Series

photos: Guney Cuceloglu

Even though the summer is a little bit over now and the temperatures have dropped significantly us Berliners we are still tough and will keep on using the bike in Autumn until the deep Winter comes. About a year ago we published the portrait series Boys On Bikes by photographer Guney Cuceloglu here on iHeartBerlin and it was quite the hit! So we thought we ask him this year if he also has some girls on bikes and guess what: He does! In continuation of his ongoing series #BikeBerlin he has taken lots of portraits by lovely ladies and their charismatic bikes. May this inspire everyone who still uses the subway to finally also get a bike in Berlin! You can only become a real Berliner if you have a bike and go everywhere with it 😉 Enjoy the series after the jump. And if you wonder how you can best use your bike you should check out our bike route guide.

Me – A Television Junkie

Me – A Television Junkie

Although I don’t even own a television, I watch tons of series. Aside from cinema culture and Berlinale the past few months have turned me into a television junkie and I’ve watched multiple series back to back. The third season of Homeland reunited Nicholas Brody and Carrie Mathison on the screen. After the third season of GIRLS I am now officially in love with Adam and last night saw the season and series finale of How I met your Mother, which I will most likely watch in my lunch break at the latest. So what should i watch now? Everything is done, over, out! Do you have recommendations?

And of course if you haven’t watched the above mentioned series: DO IT! Or don’t, because it takes serious chunks of time out of your days….

Who is Google, anyway? Girls and Boy

Who is Google, anyway? Girls and Boy

In a time when Google becomes more and more important every day  and when a search engine-ranking determines the succeess of a business, it is very refreshing to find two bands that don’t care about that at all.

Two bands with names that are absolutely disadvantageous in terms of SEO. But they are very successful anyway. I am talking about Girls and Boy. Absurd as it is, the names don’t hold what they promise. Girls are two boys and Boy are two girls.

More after the Girls and Boy after the jump
