A couple of weeks ago I was invited by Wella Professionals to be part of their new #ShowYourPride campaign and participate in a photoshoot for Blonde Magazine along with the striking Strify, the luscious Leonie, and the daring David. It was certainly an unexpected request, but one I followed gladly, because it gave me the opportunity to talk about diversity and being different – but also because I got the chance to express some public pride myself with a dash of rainbow colors in my hair.

“Would you like a make-over?” This is usually not the kind of question you want to hear from anybody (especially family or friends who should always love you the way you like). But when this question comes in an eMail send by Brunette – a hair salon some of my friends were already telling me so much about – Frank and I didn’t think twice about giving it a try.
A couple of months ago we decided to arrange a “hair date” to test this newly redesigned hair salon inside a former barn. Actually, for me it was more like a social experiment to see if a hair dresser would dare to tell my dear Frank to cut his rocker hair off. But unfortunately the gay couple who runs this place, Lars and Andre, have more an open heart for the well-being and the comfort of their customers rather than my entertaining hidden agenda. So be it! The hair date went fine, and while I really got quite a strong make-over, Frank just got what he wished for: a little trim of the end of his long blonde hair.
The salon is situated in a hidden courtyard at Tempelhofer Ufer, not too far away from the gallery district of Potsdamer Straße. The whole area around Potsdamer Straße has become the new it-place. So Brunette might be on your way if you want to spend your night at some vernissage or other social event in that area.
Still we recommend to make an appointment when you have some free time to spare to enjoy their treatments and care to the fullest. The address and some images after the jump.

I have an irrational fear of new hair dressers. Now you might think that I am a diva and that cutting a men’s hair is actually not so hard and what should go wrong with short hair, right?. But believe me: growing up in east Germany taught me that the people with scissors in their hand cannot be trusted. For years I always went to the same hairdresser here in Berlin not because I thought the salon did an amazing job, but just because I thought they didn’t do any permanent damage.
But when I stumbled upon the beautiful Zins Hair Salon on my way to visit a friend at Körnerpark, I knew that the day arrived where I had to try out something new. The hair salon is owned by a charming lady called Nadine Zins and you immediately realize that there is a lot of passion behind the project. While cutting my hair Nadine told me enthusiastically how she created most of the furniture for the beautiful interior of the shop herself together with a friend who is a carpenter. Also, the concept of only using organic natural product is quite unique for the neighborhood and I like the fact that she selected all the beauty products with research and care.
A longtime fan of Neukölln Nadine wanted to contribute with her passion to the district. She succeeded in creating a unique place with a charming interior and top skilled team of professional hair dressers working for her. I love when I get the chance to stumble upon passionate micro-entrepreneurs in different neighbourhoods and when they cut my hair with style I love it even more. More snaps of the space and the address after the jump.

Some might call her art grotesque, others will call it majestic. In any case the artworks of the Berlin-based artist Pola Sieverding is one of a kind. Reflecting multiple aspects of masculinity her videos and photographs called our attention and made us curious for more. Therefore we connected with her to learn more about her vision and her artistic approach. Read the full interview and enjoy her sexual and sometimes revolting artwork.

Marlene Haring
I told you already that things are getting hot in town. The fashionistas are filing their claws for the upcoming fashion week. Since I am always kind of unprepared for this kind of event I often realize that I miss some critical point of view here in the German fashion circus. Why for example didn’t any designer protest when the Senat decided that the tent has to move because fashion is not a form of art or culture and that’s why it shouldn’t be over the memorial stone of the Nazis burning the books. Perhaps because the fashion industry is more industrial than cultural even from the designers point of view. In the art world on the other hand there are strong voices that critizise the fashion industry for producing false believes about self-image and beauty. Little by little I want to present to you some of these artists, so that this time we might think about Fashion Week a little less industry-related but as an opportunity to discuss different oppinions of our personal aesthetic. Above you see the artwork of Marlene Haring: Because every Hair is different.

On Sunday I went to the big relaunch show and party of Sebastian Professional at the subway tunnel at Potsdamer Platz. I have never been to a “hair” event and I did not know what to expect, but this was quite a big affair actually. The audience I would describe as… interesting. Hairdressers gone wild, you could say, but visually not exactly what my eyes are used to. The whole event centered around a presentational show with a catwalk and live cutting and styling where they presented their fancy new line of products. Hair was flying in a cloud of hairspray, swish, swish, swoosh… et voila, here we have BIG hair.
I was especially happy to see the current fall collection of Berlin-based label C.Neeon on the models that I had already seen on the runway at Fashion Week earlier this year. I need to have this half-transparent sweater! Sadly, they only have the women’s stuff in their online shop. Buhuu!
I also got the chance to go backstage and make some snapshots of the models and stylists (and grab a few leftover styling products of course). But as much as I would have enjoyed to stay for the party (and buffet and free drinks) my hangover and exhaustion of the previous night’s party (and an upcoming cold) just forced me to go home. Impressions after the jump.
