One of the things that everyone tells me when I ask them what they think is special about Berlin is the sense of freedom here. Having lived here for such a long time I often tend to take it for granted, not realizing how it’s actually quite special to be able to wear whatever you like, love whoever you want, work in whichever job you want to – and generally be free in many more ways. But the moment I hear from people from other cities or countries, or when I personally set foot in them, I remember how privileged we are in Berlin.

To celebrate this freedom the city has set itself its own freedom monument in the shape of an installation in front of Hauptbahnhof. Designed by the prestigious architecture office GRAFT the monument reads out #FreiheitBerlin (freedom Berlin) which also functions as a social media hashtag so people can share their own thoughts about the freedom in Berlin on various social media platforms. So far over 9000 people have already shared the hashtag.

On the scenic Spree riverbank at Hauptbahnhof’s Washingtonplatz once set a pavilion by the tourism board of Mexico. The installation highlighted the many wonders of this country – its cuisine, its heritage and its natural beauty.  The pavilion’s dome featured the latest in flashy, interactive technology – I wore an Occulus Rift VR headset for the first time.

Mexico is indeed an awesome travel destination. I visited in December – it was the perfect warm getaway from the Berlin cold. I went to the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea, home to Playa del Carmen and Tulum of the Riviera Maya.

Maybe not so much when marketing becomes a surprising pleasure and definately not at all when the  marketing object is not a big brand but an artistic project like a ballet. I was really surprised that our Berliner Staatsballett had the guts to just do something like a flash mob. In the conservative dance world this must be considered absolutely crazy. One hundred dancers from the company and from the ballet school gathered around  at Berlin Hauptbahnhof last Thursday and showed a little choreography of their upcoming ballet: OZ – The Wonderful Wizard. Even if there are for sure better flash mobs out there I liked the end of it very much when the station speakerphone announced the departure for the train to Oz. This is the kind of magic that gives me goosebumps. But maybe I just read too many Harry Potter books. The video of the flash mob and the date of the first show after the jump.
