Rows of shopping paper bags put up upside down in the middle of a busy street in a way that they resemble gravestones. Unfortunately, that’s not any silly Halloween action. On the contrary – the ”RIPMARK” bags, each with a cross printed on them in a familiar blue font, symbolize actual deaths of innocent people. The happening, organized by intervention artists Rocco and his Brothers in a collaboration with the street artist Hera from Herakut, is a bold gesture of protest against fast fashion.

After Berlin epically embraced and celebrated the unique art installation “The Haus” in 2017, it was about time for another larger than life urban art project to hit Berlin’s scene (and have it all wet in anticipation). Berlin Art Bang e.V. – the creators of “The Haus” – have thought of something equally special to keep the urban art spirits soaring: large, breathtaking brand new street art murals, all over the city.
About 100 artists were invited to grace Berlin’s dirty old walls with 30 new mind-blowing murals, that turn the city into a big open air gallery for the very first Berlin Mural Fest that took place in May 2018 with artists like Ben Wagin, Arsek & Erase, Herakut, Stohead, Saturnoart, Semor, Tasso, Akteone & Cren, Saturno, One Truth, Insane 51, The Weird, Quintessenz und Mr. Woodland and also Klebebande.

What happens when over 100 artists take over an empty office building in Berlin? One of the biggest urban art exhibitions Berlin has ever seen! The Haus opens its doors to the public on April 1st in West-Berlin and we had a chance to take a sneak peek of what to expect. What we saw was an insanely diverse spectrum of urban art from artists and creatives from all over the world. Everyone could take over an entire room and do whatever they want – every single artwork is totally site-specific and unique. You’ll see people like Herakut, Case Maclaim, Klebebande, Vidam, Rocco & Seine Brüder, El Bocho, Die Dixons and so many more.
The exhibition is accompanied by a photo book that documents all the process and shows all the artworks that you will find in the Haus. It’s a great way to take home a piece from this amazing project. After the exhibition is over the building will be torn down with every single piece of artwork still inside making them mortal just like street art itself. Once its own borough, the district of Prenzlauer Berg now belongs to Pankow and is located right next to Mitte and Friendrichshain. Characterized by the five-story ‘Althaus’ with a closed courtyard in the back the typical Prenzlauer Berg block is very large. The district is dominated by broad tree-lined streets with colorful boutiques, restaurants and cosy cafes attracting a mix of stay-home moms and dads, freelancers and university students alike. Prenzlauer Berg can’t deny its creative and alternatively individual vibe with parks being taken over by children’s birthday parties clearly marked by burlaps and balloons under the tree, a broad range of organic food shops, hip new juice shops and a yoga studio on almost every corner. These days Berlin got one more awesome amazing street art mural more! I love that this is totally becoming a thing here and it seems the murals are getting more and more refined and elaborate. We owe quite a big percentage of the new city murals to the work of Urban Nation who are actually organizing the artists and getting permissions by the city to use certain walls.
This new one up here is by the German artist duo Herakut who are already for the second time painting a wall in Berlin. It’s located at Greifswalder Str. 87 in Prenzlauer Berg right outside the ring and it’s about motherhood. Coincidently I took these making of photos on mothers day.
