In the last few years, Berlin has given refuge to creative souls from all around the world who were in search of a cool yet affordable place to call home. Berlin offered them that, and so much more, with its distinct, unique lifestyle becoming every young person’s fantasy. That fantasy, and its disillusionment is being captured and satirized by musician Joel Montagud and writer Hayley Bracken in their video “Berlin Spree”, and we think it’s hilarious!
The video follows a female protagonist as she muses over the appeal of life in Berlin, and what this generation gets (or fails to get) out of it: and it’s so funny because it’s so true. The video itself is a testament to Berlin’s inclusive, pro expression expatriate community and ‘hipsters’ willingness to satirize themselves.

When I checked out the new video by Sir Serch that a colleague had sent to me I was sitting in the subway surrounded by people. I had to laugh out load at one part of the video and felt a little embarressed about my little public outburst, but the part is just so good. Here you have Berlin-based rapper Sir Serch doing his thing and walking into this vintage store somewhere in Kreuzberg or Neukölln to meet his gang. But his gang has changed, you could say they have been gentrified by hipsterism. And their exchange about it is quite hilarious and to be honest there is quite some truth in it, of course immensely exaggerated. But actor Tom Radisch is really just to good in his role of a total douchebag. If you like German rap or not doesn’t matter, you will certainly enjoy this video. And remember, if you don’t have a beard, you don’t belong here! 😉

So, this is pretty much how you can imagine how the young and hip in Berlin areas such as Neukölln live nowadays. Altbau with Dielen, of course, well, unless you got lucky and got an apartment in the Plattenbau across from Hasenheide. Sparsely decorated, like you don’t really care. Always the air of an afterparty from the previous weekend in the room. The dinner table littered with alcohol bottles, the cheap stuff of course. The bathroom is lit with candles because you don’t know how to fix the lamp without getting electrocuted. Clothes on the floor because your one Ikea rack is full / no more free wire coat hangers from the dry cleaners. Tattoos and/or piercings are mandatory – there cannot be too many. Everything is tinted in a grey haze because it looks cooler this way. Praise the gloominess, praise the I-don’t-care, praise headache pills. If mom thinks the place is a mess she can clean the fuck up herself.
At least this is the picture drawn by director John Lee Siebert in his little film that he shot in a local apartment and rooftop for music act Submerse released by Berlin-based label Project: Mooncircle. What do you think? How spot on is he with his impression of the Berlin lifestyle? Well, maybe leave the dramatic plot twist toward the end of the short film out of the equation 😉 Enjoy the cool video after the jump.

Last night I had a friendly party smalltalk with a woman who is writing her thesis about vagina design. She informed me about the cultural implications of plastic surgery down under and about the latest trends of vagina aesthetics (not the biggest expert in the matter). You can read some of her ideas in the article she wrote for the Berlin newspaper Der Freitag.
What I found quite interesting is that a vagina plastic surgery could cause infertility and definitely more pain and problems during pregnancy. Interesting because a designed vagina may improve your sex life (really???) but not your procreation. Beauty trends that work against procreation are something I am really interested in. Is the prettiest cunt the one getting the most love and attention and from a Darwinist point of view has the biggest chance of survival? Why I think that might be true for Beverly Hills but definitely not for Berlin, where beauty always has something to do with destruction, after the jump.

The Hipster Jr, Sugarhigh
The cute little video by the Polyeyed Phantom that has been making the rounds on the interdolly in the past few days has once again restarted the discussion about the oh-so-hated, yet oh-so-admired stereotype of the hipster. Although this debate seems a bit out-dated, the video Der Berliner Hipster summerizes quite accurately some of the clichées-gone-real of said stereotype. Especially interesting I find the funny and partially quite strong reactions of people on facebook and blog comments, my favorite one being: “They’re called Lana del Ray fans these days…” Haha!
But why on earth do hipsters deserve so much mockery I wonder? They wear certain fashion, they like certain music and books, they go to certain parties. Don’t we all? We just might not all look as good doing it… So far there have been so many different outlets of ridicule or even hatred against this particularily fashionable kind. Along with the brand new lecture video I have collected some of the most notable ones of recent years for you after the jump.
