Exploring Kreuzberg: A Guide to Graefekiez

Exploring Kreuzberg: A Guide to Graefekiez

photos: Amanda Artiaga

When you make your way from Kottbusser Tor down to Hermannplatz, you’ll get Kreuzberg as you imagine it to be: Loud, busy, weird and colorful. You pass Doenershops, Spaetis, and stores that sell so many cheap and unnecessary things you start questioning what they actually make their money with. If you walk straight down Kottbusser Damm, you wouldn’t necessarily guess that one of Kreuzberg’s most beautiful “Kieze” is just to your right. But as usual in Berlin, you can just turn around one corner and the whole scenery turns upside down.

The Graefekiez won’t be your new go-to hotspot for activities after nightfall, due to strict noise regulations after 22h in this neighborhood. However, all its lovely cafes, delicious restaurants, cute little shops and streets where one beautiful old building stands next to the other, make Graefekiez the perfect destination for a relaxed ‘lil Saturday or Sunday afternoon excursion. We picked a few spots that you should definitely check out.

A Guide to Schöneberg’s Beautiful Akazienkiez

A Guide to Schöneberg’s Beautiful Akazienkiez

Schöneberg, Schöneberg…? Surely, some people who aren’t yet familiar with the city won’t know that Schöneberg is one of Berlin’s neighborhoods because that’s exactly what happened to me. For decades Schöneberg was the epicenter of Berlin’s creative underground, but today you will find Berlin’s interesting, cool, and artsy vibe in most of the Eastern neighborhoods. This unique atmosphere that makes people from all over the globe want to move to the German capital. That way some neighborhoods like Kreuzberg have kept their cool and edgy reputation over the years. But, as you can already imagine, there’s much more than meets the eye in Berlin’s west, especially in Schöneberg. Yes, if you are new in town Schöneberg is still worth a visit and we are going to explore some of its curious locations and little wonders.

FYI: Because Schöneberg is quite an extense neighborhood, I have focused on a specific area which it’s the Akazienkiez and places near The Red Island. In a map, you can see a distinctive triangle-shaped area of Schöneberg bordered by railway lines S1, U7 and the Ringbahn of Berlin. It was called like that due to the left-wing supporters that lived in that specific neighborhood.

Your Berghain-style Black Ice Cream

Your Berghain-style Black Ice Cream

If you were asked to imagine Berlin as an ice cream, what image would you have for it? Exactly. Full-on hardcore, All-black-everything, seemingly unapproachable, but actually tasting the sweetest. This idea of putting Berghain-friendly ice cream into a cone was realized by Black Poodle Ice Cream Club on Schlesische Straße back in 2017, and we couldn’t contain ourselves – we actually can’t wait to match it with our outfit while waiting in that long queue.

Now in 2018, we had to notice that the Black Poodle had disappeared and the place was suddenly Vanille & Marille – a beloved local ice cream chain. Our fear that this amazing black ice cream had vanished was luckily not confirmed as Vanille & Marille still offer this flavor, yeay!

If you stroll around Schlesi, do NOT miss out on trying this super tasty AND stylish ice cream. I guarantee it’ll become your favorite!

Design Your Own Magnum Ice Cream at the Pleasure Store

Design Your Own Magnum Ice Cream at the Pleasure Store

After a hot summer day in the city, we couldn’t have imagined a better evening activity than visiting the opening party of the new Magnum Pleasure Store last Thursday at the Neues Kranzler Eck in Charlottenburg. During the Chocolate Hour that attracted top models, social media stars and ice cream lovers we had the chance to be one of the first people in Berlin to design our own unique Magnum. With the help of the “Pleasure Makers” in the store you could compile your own Magnum creation out of several tasty and decorative ingredients. The results were definitely the most stunning Magnum ice creams we’ve ever seen (and eaten).

The event was also the opening of the exhibition “Release the Beast” by famous fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott who shot Kendall Jenner for this photo series. The Pleasure Store has already opened in New York, London, Paris and Amsterdam and now it was about time that we got our hands on these deluxe ice creams here in Berlin. Get a preview of the store that will hopefully wet your appetite after the jump.

California Pops: Organic Popsicles in Kreuzberg & P’berg

California Pops couldn’t have opened at any better time riding the craze-wave of ice popsicles right at the top as this trend is coming to Berlin. And just to set record right: we won’t complain! A delicious and beautiful way to cool us down on these hot summer days.

With this storefront in Kreuzberg, no need to wait around for a street food event anymore. And Prenzlauer Berger also get their fix at the brand new second store at Eberswalder Straße.

Berlin Goods: Kyl – Molecular Popsicles

Berlin Goods: Kyl – Molecular Popsicles

Berlin is mainly known for its club culture, easy lifestyle and cheap rents. What people rarely appreciate are all the amazing ideas and products that are being designed and invented here. With our new series Berlin Goods we want to introduce you to some of them.

We’ll start with something that couldn’t be more relevant during these hot summer days: Popsicles. But not just any ordinary popsicles, we’re talking molecular icecream that has the look of an avant-garde accessory. Kyl is organic, fair trade, comes in vegan and yogurt versions and many different flavors. It’s probably the most interesting icecream I have seen in… well, forever?

You can try it out yourself: Since July the founder of Kyl, David Marx, hosts a pop-up sale at the Platoon Kunsthalle at Schönhauser Allee 9. Some more impressions after the jump. Follow Kyl on Facebook to be updated about their amazing popsicles.

Licking Ice Cream with Dancing Couples

Licking Ice Cream with Dancing Couples

Last week I noted that being a dance curator is probably a way more exciting job then I could ever have. This week I am not so sure anymore because I might have found something even better. We had the pleasure to meet four young promising talents of the local contemporary dance scene and had the task to do a cheeky, sexy GIF shooting with them.  Not bad, huh! And since the summer finally has come to town and everybody is licking on hard cold things, we brought some ice cream to the set just to make the pics more sweet and sticky. If you want to see the whole result of our shoot you have to go to Sophiensaele to see one of the dance pieces of the Gemischtes Doppel dance festival since we are doing an exhibit in the foyer of the theater. Also the GIFs well be shown at the final summer party of Sophiensaele this Friday. It is free so take your chance to dance with us and have some ice cream.

Also we are giving away 2×2 tickets for the 2 dance shows on Friday just before the party. To win just write us a comment recommending your favourite ice cream shop in town. I want to thank Ligia, Vincent, Dani and Gael for shooting with us. I am looking forward to see them dance on stage and I hope you do to. Go and see Ligia and Vincent tonight and tomorrow at 19:30h in The Show Show for some extraordinary dancing, yes dancing, energetically through some dance history (pop songs included) and visit Dani Brown’s Home on Friday and Saturday at 21h for a furious trio with Justin and Gael in a performative mix of text, dance and song. After the jump there is another small preview of our GIFs and some making of pics of the photo shoot.

Efa’s Frozen Yogurt

Efa's Frozen Yogurt

Two weeks ago a brand new frozen yogurt place opened at Weinbergsweg conveniently located close to Rosenthaler Platz. Considering the frozen yogurt hype first started in the States sometime in the 80s this is one of those trends that took forever to reach good old Germany. But as I am a big fan of yogurt ice cream I say: better late then never! Here in Berlin we have frozen yogurt now for a couple of years all started by Yoli. Since then a few places have opened. But what makes Efa’s Frozen Yogurt so special apart from it’s great location and original interior? Their yogurt is all organic! Some impressions and details after the jump.
