Not even a year has passed since our last new Berlin restaurants round-up of 2018. But my list of interesting new openings has already surpassed 10 so it’s about time for another one for 2019!

The last couple of months have brought us quite an interesting wave of new gastronomic projects. Some hail from already established entrepreneurs while others are complete newbies in the food scene of the city. While recent years showed a slight tendency towards more exquisite places I feel this year it’s quite balanced including something for everyone.

In our selection, you’ll find some creative fine dining, Asian delights from China, Korea, and Japan, a new Syrian place, of course, another cool new pizza joint, and also some hearty down-to-earth kitchen.

The Japarade – Go for a Walk with Berlin’s Japanese Subculture

Japanese subculture is pretty much under-represented in Berlin. The more reason to look forward to the event that will take place this Saturday in Friedrichshain. The Japarade is an interdisciplinary art project that deals with Japanese art and their positions in Berlin’s subculture. The exhibition will take place in two galleries in Friedrichshain and will show the work of Japanese artists in Berlin including contemporary photography, painting, graphic design and installation.

For the opening reception both exhibition locations will be connected with a colorful, loud and wild street parade: The Japarade. Fantastical Japanese creatures of all sorts will entertain the audience. All the details after the jump.

Susuru – We Heart Japanese Noodles

Not only is this Japanese restaurant extremely nice to look at, it also serves excellent food. The Susuru offers a variety of authentic delicious Japanese Udon noodle soups on a regularly changing menu, as well as some side dishes they refer to as Japanese Tapas. We expecially like Edamame, a small snack consisting of young soy beans in sea salt, the Chicken Curry Udon, which is a very hip dish in Japan right now, and the Matcha Macchiato, which is hot milk with green tea powder.
