Street Portraits: The Style of Berliners

Street Portraits: The Style of Berliners

photos: Katja Hentschel

There was a time when street style was totally a thing. Every major city had a street style blog (or many) and of course also Berlin. But the trend had faded over the years a bit and many blogs stopped posting or changed their editorial concepts. Thanks to Instagram and success projects such as Humans of New York (and other cities that followed) street portraits totally had a comeback!

Glamcanyon used to be one of the major street style blogs (and to me personally the most beautiful one) in the early days of fashion blogs in Germany, but the flow of new styles dried up a bit a few years ago. Back then the blogger behind it, photographer Katja Hentschel, shifted her focus to other projects such as her follow-up blogs Travelettes and Glowbus. But a few months ago her passion for street portraits came back to life and she decided to revitalize Glamcanyon. Now you can again regularly find her beautiful photos of beautiful people from Berlin and other cities that she comes to. But with the new photos you can see how the eye of the photographer has developed over the years. Now it’s not anymore purely about the looks, it’s also about the personality of the portrayed person and the moment they had with the photographer. Absolutely charming! We selected some of our favorites from Berlin for you today.

WE ARE BERLIN – A Group Exhibition presented by iHeartBerlin

Berlin is not made of its museums and monuments. It’s not defined by its architecture or geographical features. Berlin is not only about its history or its bad weather. Berlin is not Germany, it’s the entire world in one place. Berlin is made of the diverse, colorful, creative, grumpy, carefree, poor, hard-working, clueless, happy and lost people that live here. We are Berlin.

Today we would like to proudly announce our new group exhibition WE ARE BERLIN that will be open to the public from September 17th til 24th 2014 at a brand new venue at Leipziger Straße 60 with a big exhibition party happing on Saturday, September 20th 2014, in conjunction with our 7th Anniversary Party. The exhibition brings together the works of many of the creative talents that we have featured here and worked with over the past 7 years, as well as contribitions of our fellow bloggers including iGnant, Dandy Diary, Pieces of BerlinFinding Berlin, Paperboats and Pornceptual.  More about it after the jump.

Cinéma de Mode: Paradise Serenade

Cinéma de Mode: Paradise Serenade

It’s always an absolute delight for me when my talented photographer friend Katja Hentschel releases a new fashion film because it’s a guaranteed couple of minutes spent well. Her new film Paradise Serenade was shot on Velassaru in the Maldives with Bonnie Strange. It’s a great retro styled pool & cocktail themed video that instantly makes you want to travel to the nearest tropical beach. Enjoy after the jump.

Cinéma de Mode: The Visit

Cinéma de Mode: The Visit

Earlier this year Katja shot this charming fashion film for my Designer Scouts project featuring the designs of Berlin-based labels Esther Perbandt, Von Bardonitz, Moga E Mago, Augustin Teboul and Sadak. The video was commissioned by the Fashion & Art Toronto Festival for their Focus Germany program and it was a great way for us to show the work of our Berlin designers abroad.

The film, titled The Visit, showcases a diverse range of avant-garde fashion in a very unexpected setting while making a tongue-in-cheek statement on the quirks of dating behavior of our modern society. Have a look after the jump.

Cinéma de Mode: The Gardener

Just recently I stumbled across the wonderful video that Katja made for our last Designer Scouts event back in July and I realized that I hadn’t shared it with you here yet. So I’ll take this as an opportunity to start a new series on the blog: Cinéma de Mode. What started as a little screening event in our Designer Scouts Showroom at Achteinhalb will now continue as a blog series showing you the best fashion films on the web. So if you happen to know some good fashion films, especially when they have some connection to Berlin, just submit your suggestions to our eMail address on the contact page or post it on our Facebook wall.

After the jump you can enjoy the beautifully summery fashion film The Gardener by Katja Hentschel.
