As a native Istanbulite, summers always meant eluding the city as soon as possible with everlasting fear of crowds, the heatwaves and the tourists during the entire three months. Leaving the city in summer is almost a global tradition for every metropolitan, except for Berliners. We prefer to foray into foreign lands in winters, but every true Berliner knows in their heart that our city is exceptionally beautiful and sexy in the summer, and we don’t want to skip a bit of it.
Inspired by some of the chapters in our book Like A Berliner, we narrowed down our favorite activities that make Berlin so special in summer. Although Berliners are known to hate the wintertime, December brings one special treat that somehow alleviates the pain. Even those hardened freelancers who don’t need to show up for work and seriously consider hibernating with takeout as a viable survival solution are likely to leave the comfort of their home office when they hear two magic words: Christmas markets. And seriously, what’s not to love? Berlin’s Christmas markets reflect the spirit of the town itself and many of them have little to do with the cheesy vibe of dumb consumerism. On the contrary – they present a chance to discover and support local creators, get to know locations that remain relevant all year round, and last but not least, have a glass of the classic Glühwein. No more standing under heating lamps, clutching to your thick coats. The last fluff of your scarves is scaling off your necks and many heads turn to other people again. With rising degrees, the core areas of the capital shift from the inside to the outside.
Berlin awakens in Spring. And along with it the people, the cafes, restaurants, urban parks, and festivals are returning from their winter hideout. How we’ve missed the many opportunities to enjoy life under the clear sky. With Spring, all these possibilities are back!

It’s summertime and open airs are the true love of the city! Who doesn’t love a cold beer in the sun, while dancing to mellow beats by the water? Berlin’s summer period is short but sweet, so you gotta know your best spots to drop by during the week or (reasonable as you are) at the weekend to enjoy a drink, a little dance and a chat while sunsets draw us in like moths to a flame and the following city nights are long and warm. To ensure you summertime fun we put together our favorite outdoor open-air clubs, that will give you serious festival feels in the middle of the city – yaass to that!
You know the drill: Someone is coming to Berlin for the first time, and you, with them, have to visit the same typical, commonplace “Berlin musts” for the thousandth time, along with flocks of tourists who push you in order to make their 13th shot of the same angle of the Berliner Dome. To save us all the distress of touring around what everyone is expected to see in the city, we gathered their alternatives one can visit instead, through which the real Berlin is revealed. Berlin’s beauty is in the details. Yes, despite being a very popular city, it is not exactly known for, let’s say, the typical understanding of beauty. People like this city for more subtle reasons. But we think it’s also a matter of perspective. When you take a few steps back and look at it from a distance – more specifically from above – you see the city in a whole new way. Things that you normally only realize when you spend more time here become very obvious: How green the city is, the massive parks that function as green lungs of the city. How low the city was built, almost devoid of sky scrapers that mostly give cities with skylines a very generic look. From the distance you will see the more iconic constructions of the city and how much they stand-out, details that every other big city would simply swallow in a jungle of concrete.
We should look at Berlin from a bird’s eye view way more often and appreciate this different kind of beauty! The season of skulking through the dark nightclubs and dirty bars of Berlin is over, guys! It’s time to go outside and enjoy the sun. Well, we might not have a very long and intense summer here in Berlin (sadly). But those golden days that we get, we like to use as much as we can. And where do we like to go? Every where we can have a drink without a roof over a head. Preferably something with a view, or inside the green, or at the water. Well, luckily we have plenty of places in Berlin that fulfill these criteria and we’ve selected 10 of our favorite ones including some old classics and some brand new hotspots.
