Feeling Homesick for Berlin

Feeling Homesick for Berlin

Since I literally do get tipsy after my second beer which does not hold up at all with being Polish, I’m usually viewed as a kind of a curiosity at any given party. And that’s not everything: my music taste is anchored so strongly in the past that my friends just tend to look at me in disbelief when I have to admit I’ve never heard anything from their playlist.

But there’s this one song that one of them has discovered a while ago and it somehow connects us, regardless of all the usual taste differences. It’s one of those that aren’t really about the tune, or how good the singer is.

“Heimweh nach dem Kurfurstendamm” by Hildegard Knef is just all about Berlin and how no city could ever be compared to it although people over there may be trying their best. For me and my friend especially, it obviously gained even more meaning after he decided to move out for his studies.

Monypolo – A Theater Game in an Empty Supermarket

Monypolo – A Theater Game in an Empty Supermarket

What the fuck is this thing called capitalism? And why it is actually messing up all our lives instead of making them better? As simple as these questions seem at first, as complex are their answers. To take a look at one aspect that is going completely wrong with capitalism let’s reflect one moment about the Berlin start-up bubble.

Our beloved Berlin is a fertile ground for start-ups of all kinds. Low rents and many smart international people as potential employees are great resources to start your company. With the right investors, you can literally create any kind of business in this town. But as genius some start-up concepts can be, as stupid and absolutely useless to humanity the others are.

With their new theater game Monypolo the collective Prinzip Gonzo is reflecting about all the absurd aspects of hyper-capitalism and über-entrepreneurialism. With 60 other players you create a fictional career and play for success inside an abandoned supermarket at Kudamm. Between luxury boutiques and high street brands you enter a desolate mall to find a giant playground for adults waiting for you to be explored. More about our experience, the dates and some photos of the exciting game after the jump.

Famous at Ku’damm

MINI Photo Box

On Tuesday I took a trip to the far far West and visited the MINI Photo Box at Ku’damm corner of Joachimstaler Strasse to check out how this whole photobooth-to-video-screen affair is coming along that I introduced to you a few days ago. Until May 29 you have the chance to take your photo and have it transmitted to the biggest video billboard in Germany which is right across the street. It was nice to see how old and young (and even dogs) were curious to try out the whole thing and wait with great anticipation for their image to appear on the big screen. I’m sure all these photos of video screens of photos will have caused some loops and malfunctions in the Matrix… Of course I also had to try it out. Some impressions after the jump.

The MINI Photo Box

One of the must-haves for people who come to Berlin is that little black and white strip of photos from one of those old fashioned photo automats that you find in certain hotspots in the city. I’m sure almost everyone of you has one, may it be from Warschauer Str., Kastanienallee or Bar25. But as these pseudo-vintage photos have become so overly popular, it’s time to go one step further. Think BIG! Imagine your automat photo being transmitted live to the biggest video billboard in Germany! How is that for a souvenir, huh? And on top of those few minutes of city-wide fame you even have the chance to win your favorite brand new MINI car. Intrigued? Then look after the jump to find out more.
