Monti Caffe’ Bar – A True Italian Restaurant in Friedrichshain

Monti Caffe’ Bar – A True Italian Restaurant in Friedrichshain

Already in its second edition, the True Italian Festival of authentic Italian cuisine stormed the city last weekend with over 50 locations to explore. Organized by our friends from Berlino Magazine their goal is to promote Italian dishes that are not so famous in Germany. The great deal about this festival is: You get a unique specialty and a drink all for the special price of 7 Euros. Sounds good right?

This year we decided to have a special look at a cute little restaurant and breakfast place in Friedrichshain. Monti Caffe’ Bar offers a selection of Italian pasta dishes and international cakes and breakfast options. It’s definitely not the typical kitschy Italian restaurant with odd interior choices you might know from your holiday. Instead, Monti is more like a cool urban spot with clear influences of playful Italian design mixed with Berlin elements like concrete and steel details. Check out the address, opening times and some pictures after the jump. Read on…

A Taste of Iran in Berlin: Sabzi & Coucou

A Taste of Iran in Berlin: Sabzi & Coucou

Berlin is blessed with culinary delights of lands near and far. A mélange de tout, the Hauptstadt has something to offer to everyone. While the influence of Middle Eastern flavors is felt on every corner in form of Döners, Falafel, and kebabs, the Iranian cuisine is still heavily underrepresented. Few restaurants are trying to inject some of the exotic East into Germany’s beating heart and few people too. Among such people is Anahita, an Iranian girl whose  Sabzi and Coucou are bringing in the Persian flavors with an added twist.

My Goodness

Scientists say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We don’t really care, if that is true, because we basically love to eat all day long. Dining at the Cemetery: MARS Restaurant at Silent Green

Dining at the Cemetery: MARS Restaurant at Silent Green

Berlin is really good at re-purposing old places. Factories turn into clubs, old bunkers turn into art galleries, and in Wedding, a crematorium has been converted into a very nice restaurant and art gallery space. It’s called Mars (formerly Moos), and it sits in the middle of an old cemetery.

The food is wonderful, as is the architecture. It feels very refined and classy, but not in a stuffy, expensive way. It’s chic and sophisticated, but approachable.

Lavanderia Vecchia – Newkölln Adventures

Lavanderia Vecchia – Newkölln Adventures

I have no problems with Neukölln. I don’t think that it is dangerous, I don’t have any problems with the people living there (hipsters included) and I have no envy at all towards people paying so much less rent than I do. Still I am not a Newkölln enthusiast. Something makes me nervous there. Which is a pity, because they have one restaurant I would kill to have in Mitte, Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain.  The Lavanderia Vecchia (ital. the old laundry) is an amazing place with amazing food. And during the day for lunch time the prices are amazing too. In the evening they just serve full course menus for a fixed price of 58 EUR (drinks included). Certainly more of an option for special occassions. The social engagement of the restaurant is quite impressive. Once a month they serve extra cheap food to unemployd and homeless people.  Check out some impressions and the address after the jump.
