MELT! with Flower Power!

MELT! with Flower Power!

What was the styling trend number one of this year’s MELT! Festival? As you see: flowers inside the hair. I am not so sure if these floral wreaths that nearly every second girl was wearing had any secret meaning such as: follow me to my tent, or something like that, or if it’s a devotional gesture towards Lana del Rey. For sure we had a good time without any flowers on our head. Beth Dito is my second new best friend and was an amazing entertainer, Rufus Wrainwirght is the new Elton John of the hipster generation, Little Boots is really small and Two Door Cinema Club was my discovery of this year. Apart from great bands we had a good portion of luck with the weather and some good company with the guys of Mit Vergnügen, the Jane Waynes and the girls from LesMads. Only thing I am asking myself:  When did it become a must-do to wear a carnivale costume to a festival? I get the idea of transformation and dressing up for a party or even for a festival. But most of the costumes looked cheap and not really authentic to me. Like a trend people follow without having real fun with it. Some pretty people with and without costumes after the jump.

Introducing: Her Voice Over Boys – Win tickets for Kater Holzig

Introducing: Her Voice Over Boys – Win tickets for Kater Holzig

At this year’s MELT festival I made a wonderful discovery. Saturday night at the Sleepless Floor, there was an act that almost nobody in the audience had ever heard of before. At first, people were a little skeptical about the newcomer on the stage: What is an actual live band that nobody knows doing here at prime time? But then the performance became one of those magical experiences at festivals when just everything falls into place. In the end, the whole audience was enchanted. Everyone knew they had experienced something extraordinary. And everyone kept asking: “What is the name of the band? What are they called again? Do you have the line-up to look it up?”

The name of the band is Her Voice Over Boys, they are the latest signing on Oliver Koletzki’s label Stil vor Talent. The music of Her Voice Over Boys is deeply romantic, it consists of dreamy melodies, heartfelt vocals, accessible bass lines and club-ready beats. This Sunday they are playing their Berlin debut at Kater Holzig. Their performance starts at 1 am.

Check out the music after the jump and take your chance to win 2 guestlist places.

Electronic Beats Boat Tour at Melt

Electronic Beats Boat Tour at Melt

Almost the whole team went to Melt Festival last weekend ( Frank was with us, at least on our minds ), the girls having been camping, the guys having preferred a clean and cosy hotel room. On Saturday we were invited by Electronic Beats for a boat tour together with the girls of Fashion Blogs Les Mads and This Is Jane Wayne, lovely initiated by our hosts Pierre and Mathias of Mit Vergnügen. The meeting point at Melt was the ice cream stand supplying hungry vips with ice and wafles. Watch the pictures of the boat tour by Mathias Hielscher after the jump: Read on…

MELT! Festival 2011 Photos

Melt! 2011

If you have lived in Berlin for a longer period, you will find it difficult to move to another German city. If you only attend the Fusion, you will find it difficult to attend any other music festival. Thanks to the frontlineshop I was able to try out the Melt! Festival anyway. My impressions after the jump and more details in the German version of this article.

We will MELT! again

Foals

The last edition of the MELT! Festival was the first one in a couple of year’s that I didn’t go to. Why? Because for some reason there were not enough acts in the line-up that would make the hassle of driving to Dessau and camping out on a field worth while.

This year is an entirely different matter because the partial line-up that has been announced so far has so many gems in it that I’m sold already! Take this year’s headliner for instance: Massive Attack! Hello? I need not say anything more about them! And of course: Booka Shade. I can’t wait for their new album which comes out in May and I can’t wait to see them live again. Another quite intriguing act will be the brilliant director Chris Cunningham how will have a DJ and VJ Set. I’m also curious about the Crookers who produced some tracks with Roisin Murphy for their own and for her new album. Just recently I saw The XX live at Astra and I really enjoyed the concert, so it will be nice to see them again.

Further acts I am looking forward too are Four Tet who’s minimalistic electronic album I listen to a lot lately, Get Well Soon who has this amazing album out that is like a whole new genre of independant music, Foals who were introduced to me just yesterday and their new single is really big, Lindstrom & Christabelle who are on constant rotation on my iPod these days and Matias Aguayo who will perform with his own band for the first time.

If all or some of these names mean nothing to you, you better head after the jump to see a music video of each of them.

Melt! Festival

Who Made Who

This year the Melt! Festival takes place for the 12th time, somewhere in the East German countryside, in a disused coal mine, a rather unusual venue for a festival. The location is Gräfenhainichen, near Dessau. Surrounded by gigantic cranes you can dance in front of the various stages and on the dancefloors. The place is called Ferropolis – the city of steel – because of the huge industrial machines standing around in the former coal mine. The festival’s camping area is located next to Gremminer See from where you can see those huge coal cranes that are illuminated by coloured lights when it gets dark and take a bath if it’s too hot.
