We can’t believe it, but it seems the lockdown and with it the lack of events, seems to be finally over. More and more live events are popping up all over town and we are eagerly hopping from one to the next. We really missed going out, mingling, enjoying music, drinks, performances – it’s been too long.
The summer seems to be full of events and we’re still getting new ones every day. We’ll be updating our event page from now on again, so stay tuned to it. For now, we selected a new of our favorite upcoming events of the summer, including the first Pornceptual event of the year, screenings by Mobile Kino, and some exciting theater performances. We hope to see you there!

This city has always gone hand in hand with artistic creation, being generous in providing artists with a safe space to freely express themselves, as well as serve as a major aesthetic inspiration. Film makers in particular, often use Berlin’s diverse setting as their canvas upon which they unfold their stories, each one triggered by a different aspect of life in this Wonderland. We are excited to present you these Berlin-themed short films, which capture Berlin’s unique vibe perfectly, and speak to all of us that are hypnotized by the city’s magic spell.

One look at how fast the tickets for the screening of Nick Cave’s recent movie are selling is enough to say that at least part of Berlin adores this guy and the proof of Cave’s devotion to the Hauptstadt is an indubitable part of its history.
After the screening of last year’s music documentary “B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin 1979 – 1989” at the Mobile Kino over at Grießmühle, people actually started to applaud as the lights went on. It seemed like the film could provide anyone with a reason to shed a tear or two; it caused some to reflect on their youth, and others to wonder how the fuck did techno eventually prevail.

With LOVE the provocative director Gaspar Noé is bringing us one of the most sexually explicit movies into the the cinemas that we have seen in a long time, and in this case even in 3D. Actually, the regular multi-plex might have a hard time actually showing this one, because it’s THAT explicit, so you will more likely find the film in more alternative movie theaters.
Even though the title suggests otherwise, this is not a sweet love story, this is the story of a broken man who thought he found love, messed it up and now suffers from it. What he thinks was love pretty much resembles some of the best and most intense sex that he has had with a former girlfriend and that pretty much let’s the viewer wonder how much this character really understands the actual concept of love which clearly goes beyond that. However unlikeable he seems to us, the sex scenes are quite fantastic and not as seedy and sensationalist as you would expect. The intimacy and passion seems real and, like it or not, it will get you in a certain mood. Especially the threesome scene is regarded as a highlight amongst fans of the film. We love that the director is breaking the norms of cinema by openly showing sex as part of relationships and life as explicit and beautiful as it is.
If you want to have a chance to see it here in Berlin our friends from Mobile Kino are hosting a late night screening of the raunchy film (in 2D) at Griesmühle this Wednesday, go check it out. Some photos and a trailer after the jump.

In the summer of 2009, brothers Joel and Joshua Alas decided to invest some money in a digital projector with plans to start their own open-air film night. What resulted from the little open-air screening in the Lessinghöhe Park in Neukölln was what we now know as Mobile Kino. The digital age has hit cinemas, and as 35mm projections began to fade away, we lost some of the magic of the movies. So, the Mobile Kino crew (comprised of a team of Berlin projectionists, cinema managers and programmers) decided to step in and create an HD digital cinema-on-wheels in the form of a beautiful Christiania transport bike. Over the years, the project has evolved working with a variety of partners, filmmakers and guest programmers; working with filmmakers directly or German distributors to ensure their proceeds go to the right people. Also iHeartBerlin has teamed up with the guys from Mobile Kino for basically all of their film events including the Berlin Film Nights and the Cinéma de Mode. Click on to find out more about this project that has become a household name among movie-lovers, and see which screenings you can catch this month.

Last night was the final screening of the Oscar-nominated Short Films at Babylon Mitte presented by shorts.tv and our friends from Mobile Kino. Because of the 3rd anniversary party of Mit Vergnügen I had to choose between the animations and the live action shorts. I decided for the later and did not regret it. The five live action films were all amazing and I have to admit that I sobbed through half of the program as a lot of them were utterly heartbreaking. My favorite ones were the Oscar winner Curfew and Henry. Curfew is about a guy who sort of messed up his life and wants to commit suicide but gets interrupted by a call from his estranged sister enquiring him as a last minute baby sitter for her daughter. The film is heartbreaking and encouraging at the same time and has an amazing musical scene in it. Henry is a film about an old man, a pianist, looking for his wife who is supposedly in danger. But more and more he realizes that reality and his perception of the world around him don’t match.
As soon as those two gems get released online I will feature them in our Short Sunday section for you to see them. For now I have one of the animated short films for you that I missed in the screening: Adam and Dog. It’s an endearing story of a dog and his ancounter with Adam in paradise. Enjoy the lovely film directed by Minkyu Lee after the jump.
