Well, M.I.A. strikes again. In her newest music video ‘Borders’, from her upcoming album ‘MATAHDATAH’, the Bad Girl hits us in the face with reality. The global refugee crisis and the overall state of the world are no longer to be pushed away. This is our present and not only M.I.A. – you are in the midst of it, also here in Berlin. ‘Borders’ is a document of our time and it doesn’t insinuate. It impeaches and it has every right to do so. M.I.A’s picture language is radical and unsparing, the beats are drastic.

Wolfenbütteler Festspiele
Everyones favorite traditional German digestif Jägermeister is bringing their successful music program, the Wolfenbütteler Festspiele, to Berlin with the 4-day music festival Hubertusfest. From November 3-6 they are bringing established German bands such as Booka Shade, Jennifer Rostock, Kid Simius, Schluck den Druck and Romano together with newcomers such as Tüsn, Cosby and Chefboss to the stage at the Spreewerkstätten. Looking back at the many Jägermeister Wirtshaus Tour and Wolfenbütteler Festspiele events they have done in the past I can pretty much guarantee you that it’s going to be one hell of a blast.
One thing that makes this festival not only fun but also genuine is the support that the younger bands will receive through it. There is going to be three public nights with concerts. The first one is the Newcomer night that is free of entry. The second and third public nights will feature the more famous bands and ticket sales of these will actually co-finance the next music videos of the newcomer bands. We salute the spirit behind this, the older ones supporting the young. Cheers to that with a Jägi! After the jump you can find out more about the line-up and win tickets for the almost sold-out events!

Berlin is such a diverse and inspiring city – so it’s not surprising that musicians love to use the streets of Berlin for their music videos and let their production take place in the city. That often leads to very nice results and we love to watch these videos where you can discover your street or the “Späti” around the corner.
After the jump you can watch some of our favorite music videos shot in Berlin. Do you know even more? We’re happy to hear about it!

The charming chanteuse Lara Maria Gräfen and us have one big thing in common: Our love for Berlin – a city that is simply great despite all its shortcomings. In her song “Berlin Ich Liebe Dich” she sings about the crude, yet irresistible character of Berlin. “You speak so many languages, but I don’t understand you. You act like you are honest, but you lie straight into our faces… I still wonder what’s your true face, but you keep your secret to yourself. Berlin, I love you.” She speaks a lot of harsh truths about the city that really make you think, but she is under the same spell that so many of us fall under when coming here.
After the release of her song in 2015 we also have the new acoustic version for you that was recorded here in Berlin at the lovely Kirk Bar in Kreuzberg. Enjoy the song that speaks straight out of our hearts after the jump.

One of the most hilarious music videos of recent history comes straight from Berlin from the crazy artist duo Ben&Julia. It’s for the song Cookie Jar by Traffic Sings featuring Berlin-legend Jake The Rapper. It’s totally insane and we love it. These cookies are out of control! Enjoy it after the jump.

I think it’s not an overstatement when you call the band Years & Years the next big thing. Their single King was a huge hit, rightly so! When I tuned into the track recently I was totally hooked and the video by Nadia is also really amazing. Their debut album Communion came out in 2015 and is filled with joyful and clever electro pop songs that will make you jump up and dance around. Check out their awesome videos and songs after the jump.

Whenever I speak with people who tell me about their plan to move to Berlin I always listen to their stories patiently before sharing my enthusiasm about the city that will make them want to come here even more. But very often I also give them some cautionary advice about the city. We all know the stories how easy it is to get lost here. It’s a feel-good-place with many possibilities to have fun and get distracted from what you actually came here for. And before you know it you start subletting your WG-Zimmer to tourists, crash at your friends’ places and spend your rent money every weekend on drinks, drugs and club entrances. Your German classes, internship applications and uni enrollment will be quickly forgotten. Berlin is such a temptress in that way.
For me this whole concept of getting lost in the Berlin is perfectly captured in the new video by Rangleklods. You see a lot of the mentioned Berlin lifestyle in it and it’s obvious how it’s on the one side very cool, tempting and sexy, but on the other side also a little destructive and dangerous. The man behind the band started out a few years back here in Berlin but has since then relocated to his home country in Denmark and added another vocalist to the team. Maybe the video to “Lost U” is a little homage to his time in Berlin? I’m only guessing… Enjoy the video after the jump.

With Berlin’s seemingly endless grey skies and unpleasant weather, we always get a bit melancholic during the winter months. Sometimes the only thing that helps is to put on your headphones and really dive into that feeling. Good thing that there are a few bands around the city that capture what it can feel like to live and love in Berlin.
Nadine & The Prussians are one of these bands. They have played the bars and clubs of Berlin for some years now, going through line-up changes and finding the right sound. With tender melodies and a love for detail, the duo fills their own niche in the vast spheres of dream pop. Over the laconic energy of their guitar sounds sings Nadine’s distinctive clear voice. The songs reflect on love and loss in places where everyone is on the move and everything is always changing. If you have ever moaned about the noncommittal ways of life in Berlin, you will know what she is talking about.
This year Nadine & The Prussians will release their first record on Phinsterbush Empires and the first single HOUSE is out now.

When I checked out the new video by Sir Serch that a colleague had sent to me I was sitting in the subway surrounded by people. I had to laugh out load at one part of the video and felt a little embarressed about my little public outburst, but the part is just so good. Here you have Berlin-based rapper Sir Serch doing his thing and walking into this vintage store somewhere in Kreuzberg or Neukölln to meet his gang. But his gang has changed, you could say they have been gentrified by hipsterism. And their exchange about it is quite hilarious and to be honest there is quite some truth in it, of course immensely exaggerated. But actor Tom Radisch is really just to good in his role of a total douchebag. If you like German rap or not doesn’t matter, you will certainly enjoy this video. And remember, if you don’t have a beard, you don’t belong here! 😉
