Go on a Trip through Berlin Nights in Black and White

Go on a Trip through Berlin Nights in Black and White

The new photo book “BerlinNights” captures the surreal and other-worldly atmosphere of the cities nightlife with a candid style in intense monochrome.

Bored of his profession as a commercial web designer in the late 90’s, Christian Reister found diversion in night strolls through Berlin. He found himself in intimate moments and cinematic scenes that inspired him to pick up his camera. He wanted to try capturing this intangible atmosphere on film that comes truly alive after dark. Reister started taking images in 2001, focusing on urban streets and city life. After 10 years of working as a photographer, he turned his back on colors, adopting a grainy, experimental approach that allowed him to create even more abstract and atmospheric work.

A Mysterious Burning Lantern in Kreuzberg

A Mysterious Burning Lantern in Kreuzberg

There she is. A lantern burning all alone. In the quietness of a Spring night in Berlin Kreuzberg. Nobody is walking around, because it is still too cold to go for a walk at night. It’s not night anymore, still it’s not day yet either. But the brightest light is without any doubt the lantern itself. Flickering like a friendly fireplace without looking damaged or vandalized at all.

This weird setting is somehow quite explanatory for the work of video artist Johannes Vogl. The Berlin-based artist creates sculptures with everyday objects and often thermodynamic manipulation. His had a bit of a viral hit on big platforms like Nowness with a video showing a burning swing.

But for me personally the burning lantern is my favorite one. Not because it is so charismatically situated at the 3-Länder-Eck where the canals of the river Spree of Treptow, Kreuzberg and Neukölln meet. It’s more the meditative and ghostly surreal effect that this video has on me that made me want to write about it. See for yourself. The burning lantern and a couple more videos by Johannes Vogl, after the jump.

Berlin 24/7: A Guide for Night Owls

Berlin 24/7: A Guide for Night Owls

photo: all.x

Having studied at another culturally forgettable -yet very beautiful in the summer – German town, I always thought that the main difference between living in the capital and living in a place, where breathing large amounts of non-polluted air almost didn’t feel right, was the night life. What differentiates Berlin from other smaller cities is not just its numerous wild parties, where the right drug combination can bring you to euphoric levels of happiness despite the insufferably monotonous beats and pull you into a life crisis the next day, while wondering how you managed to look like you already had a divorce and a few heart-attacks. Luckily, Berlin is so much more than that.

The main difference lies in the possibilities awaiting when the sunlight starts to dim and the city puts on a new outfit, less fancy but always stylish; not the let’s-have-a-reunion-at-the-cemetery-kind, but in a far more original way.

Blame it on your insomnia, your constantly unsatisfied desire to explore as many as layers of this city as possible, your biological needs, or simply your Fear Of Missing Out, Berlin is here to keep you company through the sleepless nights, when doing anything other than “sleeping, because I am working tomorrow” could feel just a little bit abnormal; to be your remedy. From Dusk till Dawn: Berlin by Night

From Dusk till Dawn: Berlin by Night

Berlin is often described as grey, dirty and noisy. In some way this is true – it’s the bitter side of the otherwise sweet fruit that is our city. Especially now in Winter the grey of the city can become a bit overwhelming. In this season, it’s the night that brings back color into the city with its many artificial lights. They create a very own atmosphere that can range from mysterious and haunting, to playful, exciting and even romantic.

Berlin-based photographer Alex Niklass has a special focus on the late hours in his work that perfectly captures the spirit of the nights of Berlin. In his photos he shows us places that are quite ordinary during the day, but that come to life in the night and tint the city in its magnificent light. After the jump you can see a couple of our favorite shots from Alex. If you like what you see you can follow his work on his Instagram stream under all.x.

Some Night Shopping

Sessun SS10

Oh, I do miss my old neighborhood around the Boxhagener Platz from time to time. I hardly ever come by there anymore. Many friends who still live or work there I haven’t seen in a while. Many restaurants and shops that I miss, the possibility to get Ben&Jerry’s icecream to every time of the day (which is close to impossible in Mitte!).

This coming Saturday many shops will be open until midnight with drinks and fun and a little bit of party on the street. They did this already last year in the summer. My friends of Visby will be open too. They are especially interesting for the girls with labels such as Modstöm, Twist & Tango, Sessun, Motel, Mimic, Insight, Rules by Mary, Insight & Nümph and Aschön. Look after the jump for details and a list of participating stores.
