Victoria Park is one of my favorites places in Berlin. Being able to have that beautiful green spot around the corner in a huge city like this is a true luxury. Especially because of the stunning view of the waterfall and the streets you can enjoy when you get to the top. So it’s no wonder that this spot was chosen to create a compelling and sensual artistic piece.
“Waterfall” is a human installation of naked bodies that cover the path that the water follows. Bodies that lay down naked next to each other, intertwined. Now the naked bodies are the water that runs down that magnificent waterfall. Together they become an endless entity of freed skin that occupies the wild landscape. They have become nature. The responsible creator behind this compelling work is Mischa Badasyan, a Russian artist and activist based in Berlin. The photos of the human installation were taken by Abdulsalam Ajaj.

What is the difference between the meat on our body and the meat on our plates? Is there really one? Why does our brain rather consider a bunch of oversized fake sausages “meat” while the real meat sits naked on top of it?
For the research to his award-winning piece Requiem for a Piece of Meat theater maker Daniel Hellmann went deep into the cruel realities of the meat production industry. What he found there was both shocking and eye-opening, and turned him and part of his team to veganism. The ways how we humans disassociate a piece of meat from what it really is – a sliced-off piece from a living creature that was killed against its will after enduring a life of torture and mistreatment – is one of the topics he dissects in his piece. But it goes far beyond the treatment of animals and blurred lines of what is the meat on our bones, the meat of an animal and the meat product that goes over the butcher’s counter. It also questions how we treat black bodies and female bodies, and how lust and desire play into our associations with meat.
Nothing that you will see in this piece is done for shock value – in fact, the realities of the things depicted in the play are by far more shocking. Yet, for some theaters, the production was too extreme so it got censored and even canceled. Luckily, Berlin theater people are not so thin-skinned so we can enjoy the German premiere tonight at Ballhaus Ost with encore screenings on the following days. Some impressions and details below.

The girls and guys from Pornceptual never cease to stimulate us with their creative erotic output – no matter if it’s with the photos on their blog, their magazines or the videos for their parties. They’ve given us flowers in spring, Mad Max futurism, surrealism, and horror porn. Now they’ve opened their Avant-Garde era with a new photo series by Yu-Liang Liu and a video by Pornceptual co-founder Chris Phillips.
With fashion having borrowed heavily from the aesthetics of pornography and fetish wear, it was a matter of time until the exchange of genres also happened in the opposite direction with porn integrating elements of design and fashion into its aesthetic. The new works from Pornceptual are just a few examples of that. It was about time that porn also exists with a sense of style – it’s all the more stimulating!
Don’t miss the upcoming edition of the Pornceptual party on April 13th, 2019. The new theme is called “Porn Forrest” and you can expect quite a lot of sex behind the bushes…

Tom of Finland movie
For the most time of the year we shut up about our love for movies showing naked skin, pleasure and lust. But there is one week where this is different and we’re out and proud, unapologetically screaming: I LOVE PORN! It’s the time of the Pornfilmfestival Berlin every year in the fall, showcasing other visual presentations of sex and love that are not degrading, insensitive or only representing one niche of the sexual spectrum. It’s the one week a year we can hardly wait for – a whole week fueled with films, panels, readings and performances that explore sexual perspectives outside of social norms, construed identities and morals.

Absurd, sexual, melancholic, poetic… the photography of Ana Hell evokes many reactions. But, it definitely stimulates us. The Spanish photographer who works a lot in Berlin loves to take normal, ordinary situations and just give them a ‘lil twist. A twist that might make the viewer go like: “Wait what? I don’t get it. What’s happening here?” And isn’t it exactly that what makes a great picture? We collected some of her most captivating, uncanny visuals.
Body parts in odd positions, confusing vantage points, absurd compositions, or stunning textures and colors – there is always that one thing sucking us into a picture by Ana Hell. As absurd, or puzzling the content might be, the composition and distinct play of colors is so calming and balanced that we just wanna keep on looking at well, … this woman, legs spread across the couch, looking at her… Uhm… or this cat, apparently chilling on a sink with her mummy in nothing but turquoise fishnet. Or two beautiful naked women intertwined on a huge …cactus?! Where else would you be naked, right?

photos: Andrea Galad
The Italian born photographer Andrea Galad creates dark visual worlds. He shows flawed creatures, demons, angels, beautiful beasts and monsters. Yet, Andrea’s world is as dark as it is warm, always moving between the poles. Since, ultimately, what are we? We are imperfect creatures, never just one thing, we are many-faced, conflicted and illogical.
The Berlin-based artist could be called a Neo-Romantic but that would simplify his work. His early influences vary, from a classic cultural upbringing, formal piano lessons to art history and Victorian literature. While his photographs are reminiscent of romantic paintings, ancient greek statues, and classical mythology alike. All these influences are visible in his art. As a child Andrea realized that he could not recreate the perfect images in his mind with paint. So, he decided for photography. But, rather than just depicting reality he is fascinated by creating an altered one. His photos are purposely manipulated and open visual doors to another world. His latest work reminds us of medieval icon paintings fused with dark contemporary photography. We see halos on unholy figures, disembodied arms and wings growing out of human shoulders.

Pornceptual, House of Red Doors, Gegen, Revolver and basically every Klubnacht at Berghain – Fetish and sex positive parties are taking over the capital. From being more of a niche branch years back, sexy, kinky fashion has become the new normal on the dance floors. So, the question is no longer: “What’re you gonna wear tonight?” but more: “How much are you gonna wear tonight?”. Being fully naked is easy, but choosing just the right amount of fabric to make everyone be like: “Oh wow! DAMN!”. That’s the fashion challenge here! For anyone who wants to join the party, but does not feel quite ready for this less-is-more fashion extravaganza – Here are some go-to-looks that never get old.

There are some art concepts that could only be transformed into reality in Berlin. The people that really make this city are indeed characterized by a certain tolerance to all things wild and free, regardless of how weird or inappropriate they may be at the same time.
On his arrival in Berlin, the Czech artist Martin Gabriel Pavel set out to explore the city and its colorful people. But although this still sounds pretty usual, I’d venture to say he made a little more of an impact in this field than you or me. The photography project he started out could only succeed under some very particular circumstance, the most vital one of them being that people would allow others to take picture of them naked, which will result in hundreds of such portrayals getting back to Pavel.
