We got an inside look at the atelier of artists Johanna Dumet and Manuel Wroblewski in anticipation of the upcoming Berlin Art Week—for which Johanna and Manuel are opening their studio to the public. Johanna skips down the steps of a giant cascading staircase held up by strong Greco-Roman-style columns when she greets me. The smell of oil paint fills the room, and Johanna’s shorts are spattered with vibrant specks of pigment.
When you step inside the Villa Heike, you leave Berlin behind and enter an ornate, yet industrial, version of ancient times. The tall ceiling and decorative columns are what you’d see in an old museum, but the art is refreshingly contemporary, standing out against the barren architecture. After climbing a few flights of stairs, we enter Johanna and Manuel’s atelier. I’m struck immediately by the light—on the top floor of the Villa Heike, their space is illuminated by huge windows facing southwest.

When you’ve got your life somehow vaguely figured out in Berlin, it is very easy to fall into a weekly routine. You see the same people, eat at the same restaurants and go after your favorite hobby. And somehow, this routine becomes dangerously comfortable, until boredom dares us to try something new. Personally, I fear and love my comfort zone. Love it, because Netflix & Angry Chicken with my hubby is fricking amazing. Hate it, because it keeps my mind from expanding. This city has many communities of different nations from all over the world that all live together here mixing their cultures into the big juicy cocktail that is Berlin. One of these many communities are Russian artists living in Berlin. I think they are fairly quiet compared to other nationalities, but with the upcoming Russian Contemporary Art Week making some noise in the city.
The RCAW is taking place in 3 galleries which are The Ballery in Schönenberg that is showcasing the work of 3 highlighted artist, the LemoArt Gallery in Prenzlauer Berg that is showing a bigger selection of younger Russian talents and finally a project by UdK students presented at Panke. The whole thing gets kicked off this Friday (May 15, 2015) with the opening reception of the main exhibition at The Ballery that shows the amazing work of Katerina Belkina, Igor Skaletsky, and Vera Veritas Kochubey. On May 29th the second part of the RCAW starts at The Ballery with additional artists in their line-up. We have a little preview of that after the jump.

There’s a new exhibition in town, and this is one you don’t want to miss. Not only is this show curated and organized by Juergen Teller and TAL R, but it features the work of both of their students from the last couple of years. Juergen Teller is a German fine art and high fashion photographer leading the fashion-photography game right now, as the creative mind behind unforgettable ad campaigns for designers such as Helmut Lang, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood and Marc Jacobs. Teller has been working with Marc Jacobs (likely his most recognized collaborator) for almost 20 years, and the photographer has since brought his raw and uncommissioned images to the public eye through magazines such as i-D, W Magazine, Dazed & Confused and “All the Vogues.” (Remember when his refusal to photograph Miley Cyrus made headlines?)
TAL R is a Copenhagen-based artist who works with an experimental variety of mediums. TAL R’s paintings initially struck me as pieces that one must truly immerse themselves in—seemingly lacking in aesthetic detail while concurrently speaking volumes of subcultural influence. Whereas in the past, the artist was known to apply oil paint to canvas, he now defines his work as a hot pot in which he throws in ‘all kinds of material.’ (Said materials range from animal glue mixed with pigments to pencils, chalk and wax crayons.) His pieces and style act as a fresco commentary on the seemingly mundane, ordinary life.
Together with the Contemporary Fine Arts gallery here in Berlin, the two artists and professors are set to co-host and organize an exhibition in which the works of their students will be on display. Teller will be showing works by his Nuremberg Academy class, while Tal R will be featuring a selection of his favourites from the entire period in which he has been lecturing, spanning 9 years. Considering the artists come from two different backgrounds, it will be exciting to see the considerable variation in the works presented. On the night of the opening Juergen Teller himself asked the visitors to undress and get photographed naked (and quite a lot of them did so) . It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years now since I went to Berghain for the first time. Time flies! Even though I had also been to previously legendary techno clubs such as the old Tresor, Casino, Ostgut and the original Panorama Bar, WMF and the old Maria I have to admit that even I was impressed when I walked into this amazing building with its unique architecture, interior design and integrated art that can’t be compared with anything else. It was to be expected that this would become one of the worls most renowned clubs. Next week, on Thursday August 7th 2014, Berghain is celebrating its 10 year anniversary with a huge exhibition at their Halle, the huge space that is on the right side of the building and that they sadly rarely use for public events. Artists Norbert Bisky, Marc Brandenburg, Ali Kepenek, Sven Marquardt, Carsten Nicolai, Piotr Nathan, Friederike von Rauch, Sarah Schönfeld, and Viron Erol Vert will show a wide range of genres including painting, photography, installation and sculpture. We can be looking forward to a spectacular show in a spectacular setting I am sure. After the jump you can get an impression of what these artists have created in the past. In our upcoming series Berlin Artist we would like to present you some of our favorite artists and their work independent from a local exhibition. We realized that many artists may live in Berlin where the studio rent is low and the possibilities of creative exchange are vast. Nonetheless the buying art market and also many prestigious galleries and museums reside somewhere else. This is why a lot of artists living in Berlin rarely show their work here.
One artist got our attention at the KIK exhibition one month ago. At the group show inside Kino International with a variety of presented works Christopher Winter‘s paintings and sculptures stood out to me. I am not so sure if it was the mixture of cuteness and artistic faculty that impressed me or the slight melancholic feeling I felt watching his paintings. I love how she combines very rough and urban textures and backgrounds with natural elements like animals and plants.
