Interior design platform MADE.com has a heart for young designers – just like we do! With their TalentLAB program, they offer their platform for upcoming product designers to present their amazing ideas. Designers from all over the world can submit their products and MADE.com will curate the best products into little collections of furniture and home accessories. People can then pledge for their favorite designs with a small deposit in a way similar to crowd-funding which secures them a special early bird price. Those products that reach their pledge goal will actually get produced by MADE.com. For those who pledged for one product that did not reach its goal, they will get a refund.
In their Berlin showroom, MADE.com is showcasing some of the TalentLAB designs that will get produced so that everyone gets a chance to get a preview of the final product. A current highlight of the latest collection titled “Ready-to-Work” is the glamorous copper Lumo Table Lamp by Emma Norlén from Hanau. Her design was actually the first one that reached its pledge goal in the new collection. Others that made it are for example a really cool side bench by Gaetano Avitabile from Italy, a beautiful brass watering can by Aaron Colfer from the UK, and a cute storage shelf by Ateliers Bah from France.

Germany is the country where the Bauhaus was born founded by Walter Gropius an outstanding Berliner who, among his revolutionary legacy, coined the historic quote “Form follows function”. He looked for the union between use and aesthetics. Berlin has it all, (only if it was at the sea…) so it’s not surprising that you can find really amazing designers in Berlin. The crafts have always had that strong artisan character deeply rooted in the tradition of learning from those who mastered techniques and materials. Despite that, I personally will take the liberty to think of them as true artists. But regardless of how you address them, there’s certainly one thing we will agree on: what they do is simply amazing. Because they don’t just create stunning objects, they create objects that will help you bring meaning to spaces and to learn what it means to inhabit a space. And hopefully to be able to fill that place with unforgettable and meaningful memories. Here you have 7 of our favorite furniture and product designers that work to keep Berlin’s look cool and, always, unique.

Did you ever wonder what happens to all the used coffee grounds in coffee shops and homes all over the city? Berliner Julian Lechner wondered if there was a way to use the leftovers and came up with a genius idea, that frees you from any eco-guilt: Coffee cups made of coffee leftovers.
In the spirit of reincarnation, Julian takes used coffee grounds to manufacture new, re-usable cups. So basically, he is the Jesus of coffee, turning the leftover powdered beans into new, sturdy coffee cups. What kind of sorcery is this, you ask? Be filled in after the jump. Read on…

Yesterday we paid a visit to the opening of the DMY 2015 – the International Design Festival in Berlin. Until Sunday you can still see the exhibition with its new talents and designs. With the Kraftwerk in Mitte the festival team found an amazing new location. Yet, some of the exhibition set-up could have been more adjusted to the cool looks of the industrial building – quite a symbol for the raw Berlin during the 90’s. For some of the exhibitors it appeared to be a challenge to take advantage of the great space as their booths sometimes felt a bit too improvised. Still, there were some really interesting and inspiring designs to see. Have a look at some of our impressions and favorite designs after the jump.

In the past couple of days the fabulous Neue Heimat celebrated their season opening with a program full of street food, design booths, concerts and parties in their wonderful location at the area of the RAW in Friedrichshain. From now on Neue Heimat will be open from Thursdays til Sundays with live music, bars and snacks on Thursday and Friday night and street food and design markets on the weekend. Look out for special events and parties as well – this place is amping up for a fun 2015 season. We went to their new design market that has some well curated product, fashion and jewelry designers as well as artists and illustrators selling some cool stuff. The Heimat Bazaar is going to happen from now on every first Saturday of the month. Of course there is again going to be lots of street food at Neue Heimat, especially during their weekly Village Market on Sundays including newbies Tatas with their delicious waffles and their new invention the muffles, as well as awesome egg dishes from The Future Breakfast. Of course their are also the beloved favorites from last year such as the Italian sandwiches by Pic Nic 34 and the Schnitzel Burger by Schneeweiß. Last night the annual DMY Festival for young product design opened its exhibition at the Tempelhof Airport and we took the opportunity to pay a visit and take some photos for you. There was some great designs and ideas there to be found, my favorites being the clever cardboard furniture by Room in a Box, the amazing Street Food Kitchen by Anna Liesch (would be so practical for the Bite Club), the Veener Shoes by Tobias Jänecke, as well as the Snego play set by the students of the Lund Universaty. The exhibition will be open until Sunday, June 1, and there are even some design products for sale there. Get a first impression with our photo set after the jump.
