Deutschland – Rammstein Breaking Down Problematic German History

Berlin’s very own hard rock export goods, Rammstein, made a comeback last week with a brand new single and a music video directed by Specter Berlin. And although the band definitely caused many a controversy in their career spanning over a quarter of a century, the song ”Deutschland” has propelled them to the levels of scandal they might not have ever reached before.

To me, the song itself begins in a way slightly reminiscent of Rammstein’s earlier work, and the very first line of the lyrics obviously brings to mind the 1997 hit song that probably made Rammstein the international sensation it is today – ”Du hast”. The past remains the main motif visually throughout the entire ten minutes of the highly cinematic music video – and that’s where the controversy arises.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – as much as I appreciate Berlin’s party culture, I find it a shame that while sex and drugs seem to be all the rage, the rock’n’roll part is usually replaced with techno. It just doesn’t seem right when you consider the tremendous legacy of our Hauptstadt as the place where David Bowie used to share a flat with Iggy Pop and where he was inspired to record his astounding Berlin Trilogy. In fact, many other rock musicians followed into the footsteps of the late Starman and acknowledged Berlin as an inexhaustible source of creative energy, be it for its unique atmosphere or poignant history.

I once described Berlin as an apotheosis of the proverbial sex, drugs, and… well, mostly techno. As a self-confessed Elvis worshipper, I find that last characteristic slightly regrettable. Personally, I try to do my share in maintaining Berlin’s legacy as the erstwhile home to Iggy, Bowie, and Nick Cave – but even cranky me can’t constantly live in the past and/or Johnny Cash lyrics. Saddened by the recent demise of the Bassy Club, we decided to put together a list of joints that still spice up the nightlife with some rock’n’roll spirit, be it punk rock, new wave, post-punk, blues, or whatever else to float your barman’s boat.
