A Guide to Berlin Fashion: Menswear

A Guide to Berlin Fashion: Menswear

Sadak / Hien Le

Berlin has found its place in the global fashion circus. Not in the realm of the big four yet (New York, Paris, Mailand, London), but has made a name of itself for crazy, edgy and experimental fashion designs. No matter where, with fashion the focus mostly lies on women (for a change). However, especially Berlin offers some fine designers showcasing that there is more to menswear than pants and a T-shirt. And, that Berlin can do more than all-black-everything. Here is a collection of our favorite brands making the men of the capital look good.

How to Dress for Berlin’s Nightlife

How to Dress for Berlin’s Nightlife

photo: Pornceptual

Pornceptual, House of Red Doors, Gegen, Revolver and basically every Klubnacht at Berghain – Fetish and sex positive parties are taking over the capital. From being more of a niche branch years back, sexy, kinky fashion has become the new normal on the dance floors. So, the question is no longer: “What’re you gonna wear tonight?” but more: “How much are you gonna wear tonight?”. Being fully naked is easy, but choosing just the right amount of fabric to make everyone be like: “Oh wow! DAMN!”. That’s the fashion challenge here! For anyone who wants to join the party, but does not feel quite ready for this less-is-more fashion extravaganza – Here are some go-to-looks that never get old.

Looking at Berlin Fashion Week from a Distance

Looking at Berlin Fashion Week from a Distance

Another Fashion Week season is in the history books and with it another week that has been accompanied by bickering and ridicule about our Berlin-version of the world-wide industry event. It’s been going on for years now, it never really got better. The articles trashing it, the comments on social media making fun of it. It’s almost like a sport to spit on Berlin Fashion Week and getting high-fived for it. I personally prefer to look on the bright side: The amazing fashion talents that are presented here!

SADAK and the Pink Burka

SADAK and the Pink Burka

Another Berlin Fashion Week is over and we are overwhelmed with impressions (and our hard drives with photos) from all the different shows and events. In the next couple of days we’ll be releasing some of the highlights of last week, starting with one of the coolest menswear shows from the official runway. We’ve followed and adored the work of Berlin-based label SADAK now for a few years, not only his fashion, but also his costumes that he did for theater pieces and exhibitions. For many years SADAK has been mostly focussing on the Asian market with his progressive and daring menswear, but since last season he has been showing in Berlin, too.

His new collection that he presented on the official runway last week brought up an interesting concept that I am sure will cause some heated discussion. Some of his outfits were inspired by Burkas and one print was depicting to characters wearing all kind of Burkas. The Burka is quite a controversial symbol from the Muslim religion and culture and I think it’s not an overstatement to say that “playing” with this symbol is in a way daring. It will certainly provoke your thoughts. Yet, it is interesting that he did what Claudio asked for last season in this article. To bring some diversity and some cultural dialogue on the runway of a usually quite commercial fashion week.

But apart from this the rest of his collection didn’t need any strong symbols as they show an immense growth of the designer in his style, it’s probably the most sophisticated collection I have seen from him. Enjoy some backstage impressions by our guest contributor Hiroyuki Koshikawa after the jump.

Berlin Fashion Week has come and already gone, which means I finally have some time to make sense of the menswear madness of this season. Men’s Fall/Winter fashion has never really been a draw at Berlin Fashion Week, but this January there were definitely a few shows who made it the perfect fashionistas catcher. From upcoming designers who raised the bar, to impeccable classic designs, and to the occasional ‘wtf?’, Berlin Fashion Week was again a great surprise. After a marathon through shows and some catching up online, I broke down the 8 Best Menswear collections that mattered most this season. Enjoy them after the jump!

The first show we visited during the Berlin Fashion Week was the runway show of Sadak. We were really happy for our friend ‎Saša Kovačević that he got the chance to show his colorful and extravagant menswear at the Berlin Fashion Week for the first time. His style is a bold mix of archaic folklore patterns and decorations and hip hop cuts. For sure his fashion is extremely unique and worth keeping an eye on. We sent our talented photographer Olga to take some backstage photos for you. Enjoy them after the jump.

SADAK – Mendeš

If you are into avant-garde fashion than you will be especially delighted with what I have for you today: Berlin-based fashion label SADAK has recently revealed its latest collection, one of my absolute favorites so far. The outstanding Serbian-born designer Saša Kovacevic has once again surprised everyone with an authentic vision of contemporary fashion, mixing Eastern culture and history.  The new impressive Fall/Winter 2013/14 collection Mendeš is inspired by traditional Bosnian costumes and combines geometric patterns with various distinctive textures and fabrics. All the pieces are extremely individual, with exceptional proportions and unusual cuts, in the shades of blue, orange, black, white and gold. Delight your eyes and enjoy the amazing lookbook after the jump.

Cinéma de Mode: The Visit

Cinéma de Mode: The Visit

Earlier this year Katja shot this charming fashion film for my Designer Scouts project featuring the designs of Berlin-based labels Esther Perbandt, Von Bardonitz, Moga E Mago, Augustin Teboul and Sadak. The video was commissioned by the Fashion & Art Toronto Festival for their Focus Germany program and it was a great way for us to show the work of our Berlin designers abroad.

The film, titled The Visit, showcases a diverse range of avant-garde fashion in a very unexpected setting while making a tongue-in-cheek statement on the quirks of dating behavior of our modern society. Have a look after the jump.

I’m a good socialist

sadak

If you are into outrages GaGa-esque fashion I have a very special recommendation for you. Tomorrow night the designer Sasa Kovacevic will be part of the group show Recast at .HBC with his new collection I’m a good socialist. I saw his work for the first time at the Designer for Tomorrow show last summer and his collection was already a favorite for me back then. His new presentation will open the evening and it will be held in the form of a dance performance. I am so going to see that! There is also other interesting stuff going on that night, find out about it and see more photos of Sasa’s designs after the jump.
