And after two years of lockdown, we felt the desire for a Berlin escapism even more. But where to? So where do you actually have snow, fresh air and almost always good weather? In the Dolomites!
Visit Südtirol invited us to explore the skiing and hiking region, and we have summarized our main highlights for you.

We can’t quite get over how amazing Berlin looks right now all covered in snow. This has been really uplifting in the last days, especially when the sun threw itself in the mix. We really needed that. It made us realize how long it has been since Berlin was covered in snow like that. I certainly don’t remember when the last time was it feels like ages.
But if we go way way back, we’ll find that snow in Berlin used to be more common. Scrolling through historic photos we found quite a lot of beautifully captured moments of Berliners in the snow. As you know we love to also include Berlin’s history on the blog, may it be about the divided city in 1981, Berlin’s naughty nightlife in the 1920s, or this very iconic colorized post-war video. There’s something about having an eye on the past that lets you appreciate the present that much more as well as look forward to a possible future of our beloved city.
With scenes of snowmen building, sled riding, snow shoveling and just frolicking through the beautiful white wonderland we feel all giddy to get out there and capture as much fun as we can have. We all know it can melt away at any moment. Enjoy the snow!

Winter could be described in countless ways. Among the most positive ones would be its definition as the time of year when all you want is to stay somewhere warm and cozy and spend quality time with your loved ones, while you are protected from the cold awaiting you outside. Should you be lucky and get the chance to see snow, well this can lead to a lot of fun. These days in Berlin, we have been experiencing both. In any case, there is a social and artistic side of winter in this city, that is perfectly encapsulated in the impressive photographs of Markus Braumann, which range from cars, train platforms or streets covered in white, the entire city disguised under the vail of fog or when the snow is combined with the breathtaking sunrise that cuts through the city. During my first walk outside after Christmas I noticed a beautiful, big, perfectly shaped Christmas tree just lying around on the sidewalk. Thrown away one day after Christmas. One day! I thought that’s a pretty tough timing. Maybe it was due to my post-Christmas melancholy or the winterish lack of sun (or both) but I could not help thinking how sad and absurd it looks like. During the next days I noticed how the streets and sidewalks of Berlin got flooded by the suddenly homeless Christmas trees of all kinds: big, small, still ‘fluffy’ or completely abandoned of needles. Something I’ve never seen with such a density anywhere outside of Berlin. And something I found a great metaphor of Winter time melancholy. So I took a camera out and off I went, to photograph this (for me) typical Berlin curiosity.

While Claudio made his Winter escape to beautiful Kitzbühel I once again flew over to Norway. It was already my second visit to the Nordic country, last year I had the pleasure to visit Geilo. This year my destination was Hovden, a small town embedded into the snow-covered mountains in the center of the country.
Hovden is maybe not the most famous Winter destination, but it really surprised me in a positive way. While Geilo was clearly more family-oriented Hovden turned out to be a very youthful place with lots of cool young people, not only visiting there, but also living there. Being surrounded by this like-minded crowd of course made the whole experience much more enjoyable.
On this wonderful trip I got to know a few really nice young local people, got to taste the exquisite Norwegian cooking and made my first attempts on skis. I really had a blast and am happy to share my impressions with you after the jump along with some recommendations for Hovden.

One of the countries that has always been on my list of places to travel to is Norway. I’ve so far only been to Sweden, which I really enjoyed, but I had heard such nice things about Norway that I was very eager to find out how it is. So when my travel buddy Katja from Travelettes invited me to join her on a trip to Geilo in Norway I was more than happy to say yes. (Btw. it’s pronounced Yeay-low.)
With our bags packed with snow suits and thick sweaters we fly to Oslo a few weeks ago to start our trip with some nice city impressions. Oslo is a really charming city, even though it’s not that big, it seems very modern and young and has a wonderfully welcoming vibe and lots of interesting people to meet. After explosing the city for about a day we took the train to Geilo, which is pretty central in the country. Of course the journey through the landscapes of Norway was already a highlight. But of course Geilo had plenty of things to discover for us including amazing slopes, countless hiking opportunities, ice fishing, relaxing spas and much more. Enjoy my my impressions of the trip.

Earlier this month my travel-addicted friend Katja and I went on yet another trip into the Alps this year. After we visited South Tyrol in Italy in late summer we now made it to the North of the region situated in Austria: Tyrol – more specifically Kitzbühel, one of the oldest ski resorts in Europe and known for its wealthy and often famous clientele. We stayed at the luxurious Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol which is one of many 5-star-hotels in the area. Within only three days we experienced this amazing winter wonderland from its best side with thick layers of snow, sunny weather and of course amazing food. Thumbs up for beautiful Tyrol! The clear blue sky and sunshine almost suggest summer, but the white fluff on the pavement clearly states: it’s icy cold, and you better put on three layers of clothing before heading outside.
The weather is the topic of the week, Facebook is full of snow pictures and the weather report is the most anticipated part of the TV programme.
So even though the weather is perfect for a long walk, the nights call for cuddling up on the couch and watching films. And because I don´t want to think about summer I choose snow to be the topic of the week! So turn the heater up, but a DVD in and feel great, because compared to these films it´s actually quite nice outside…
