With lockdown being extended every few weeks and more intense measures implemented in seemingly fruitless attempts to minimize COVID infections, we’re all looking for a way to unwind. I’m sure everyone would enjoy a normal party right now; being able to listen to music, dance, and drink with friends without constant fear of the virus. We may all crave it, but that doesn’t mean it’s fair considering our current circumstances. And it definitely doesn’t mean a party full of famous people will go unnoticed in this climate.
Italian luxury fashion house, Bottega Veneta, is facing intense criticism after hosting a fashion show presenting their Salon 02 collection in the concrete halls of Berghain, followed by an afterparty at the Soho House in Mitte on Friday. Local celebrities like Oumi Janta, Honey Dijon, and Sven Marquart were in attendance, as well as more internationally known names such as rappers Skepta, Slowthai, and Burna Boy, American designer, Virgil Abloh, and Daniel Lee, creative director of Bottega Veneta. Photos and videos of the Soho House afterparty were shared on social media, showing no social distancing, masks, or compliance with the increasingly strict lockdown measures.

Soho House, an exclusive members’ club and hotel is appropriately located in a renowned building situated in the heart of the city just few steps away from Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Built in the New Objectivity style, even today still fancy and impressive, it was first opened in 1929 and had a name sounding a little less posh than the one it holds today. The “Kaufhaus Jonass” was Berlin’s first department store where you could pay in rates.

Berlin never ceases to amaze me in terms of its relentless ability to open new places. I was reposting our “new restaurants” guide from last year only a couple of months ago only to realize that it’s already been a year. So I thought, with all the news of new places popping up recently, it’s time for a brand new “new restaurants” in Berlin guide – the 2016 edition, so to speak. And again here I was thinking it would be a quick piece with maybe 6 or 7 fresh restaurants. Well, think again, Frank – it’s BERLIN – there is not gonna just be only 7 new places… My list ended up including 15 11 (!) exciting restaurants that opened their doors in 2016. And I’m just talking about the places that stand out and already experience a good portion of hype! Of course, we’ll add new ones along the way this year, so stay tuned for more. But for now here are our fresh pickings.

JR at Gustav-Meyer-Allee
It’s been over a year now that the amazing and huge pastings of French streetartist JR started to pop-up all over the city of Berlin. The oversized photos covering the walls of several buildings in Mitte, Wedding, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg were part of his series Wrinkles of the City that he had already done in other cities such as LA, Shanghai and Havana. On April 17, 2013 his Berlin works were also celebrated with an exhibition at Galerie Henrik Springmann. The idea behind the project is a very charming and simple one: He took portraits of elderly citizens and pasted these onto the walls of their cities melting their own personal history reflected in their wrinkles with that of the city they grew up in.
It’s a beautiful series and I loved discovering all the different artworks all over the city and capturing them on my Instagram channel. Some of them were very present and you walked by them many times, others were more hidden. The last one I only found recently about a year after the exhibition. What I noticed lately was that more and more of the pastings have been disappearing, faded by the weather, ripped off, covered up, or their walls have been torn down. It’s sad to see them go, but that’s also part of their life as art in public. Every exhibition ends some time. Today less than half of the 13 pieces are still there. As I really enjoyed them I thought it would be nice to compile all my Instagrams and photos together in one post as a little memento to the wrinkles of Berlin so at least here on the blog they can exist forever. Enjoy!

JOOP! is one of the oldest and most established high fashion labels in Germany. It was founded in 1986 in Berlin and with their new Fall/Winter 2011/12 collection “The Blue Hour” they are coming back to their roots in this city. The new lookbook was shot here in Berlin at Soho House with topmodels Toni Garn and James Penfold. Once again the label shows its preference for slim silhouettes and the shifting between classic dark tones and bright colors. Have a look at more campaign photos and some online looks that you can order in their webshop at JOOP.COM – after the jump.

all art work: Gould
Sometimes I find Berlin absolutely amazing. Because the city gives people a chance. People who have a talent can show it here. Last year in summer I was at the graduation show of the Kunthochschule Weissensee and was allowed to let myself be inspired by a young artist named Gould and his exhibited series St. Nimmerlein. Gould stands out not just between his fellow students. The well-known artists should keep an eye on this newcomer. His saints reflect current problems based on the iconic painting of the Byzantine era. For me, a very successful and sophisticated artistic criticism of the system. More holy representations and contacts after the jump.
