This weekend a very special event for food lovers is happening here in Berlin: The Original Way – Coke Food Festival is taking place on Saturday and Sunday at Alte Münze in Mitte. Bringing together the best flavors from around the world prepared by local restaurant owners the festival is set out to be true culinary highlight you shouldn’t miss.

Last year Coke started their new web series The Original Way that portraits the most interesting restaurant owners from Germany that have a unique story and cook really original dishes from their home countries. From Berlin, the web series dedicated episodes to Nauta, Chutnify, Linos BBQ, Standard Pizza and Kanaan which are all really amazing places with great food and an inspiring backstory. The show recently started their second season after the first one last year was such a success. To give people the opportunity to experience the spirit of the series live they came up with the Coke Food Festival that features some of the protagonists of the show.

Street food can mean many different things. From Jamaican Barbecue, freshly roasted coffee to homemade ice-pops, everything is possible. Street food is part of Berlins dynamic though relaxed lifestyle. In this city you are always on the run from one place to another. Still, Germans care about what they consume, so going for cheap take-away everyday isn’t an option for most. Luckily there aren’t only big street food markets for established bbq pros, but also a lot of smaller, less known culinary projects. Small food trucks (or bikes) and pop-up kitchens by friends and family driven by a passion for food make our stomachs happy, so we have collected some of our favorite ones for you here.

Street Food around the World

Street Food around the World

Food is a way of coming together, a huge chunk of culture, a defining moment of – you guessed it – taste.

While in some cultures street food has always been a big part of daily life, it is on the up-and-up in Berlin, bringing delicious and quality street food that matches the fast pace of the metropolis. Next to the long-existing bratwurst, currywurst and döner there are numerous opportunities to expand your taste buds. Korean, Japanese, Mexican, you name it: Food is like a language, ever evolving. Time to get behind the magic.

Together with filmmaker Karsten Boysen, the guys of OSK made a lovely video about street food, following their hunger and ideas behind it. Observing and portraying the fast (but good) food on the streets in New York, Beijing and of course Berlin. See the foodie-licious result with a good chunk about the popular Street Food Thursday at Markthalle IX after the jump. Read on…

Forever Now Festival – A Transformational Journey

Forever Now Festival – A Transformational Journey

Going with the sense of time, a first-ever new festival is coming to Neue Heimat in the beginning of September with one question in mind: What makes one’s life worth living? How can we help to shape and transform our future to form a society that we want to live in? It’s about you as an individual, us as a culture and the society we’re living in. The organizers of the new Forever Now Festival created a line-up that approaches this topic from different angles – from interactive sessions to talks, music and food. Read more about it after the jump and find our how to win festival passes.

The Heimat Bazaar & Street Food Market at Neue Heimat

The Heimat Bazaar & Street Food Market at Neue Heimat

In the past couple of days the fabulous Neue Heimat celebrated their season opening with a program full of street food, design booths, concerts and parties in their wonderful location at the area of the RAW in Friedrichshain. From now on Neue Heimat will be open from Thursdays til Sundays with live music, bars and snacks on Thursday and Friday night and street food and design markets on the weekend. Look out for special events and parties as well – this place is amping up for a fun 2015 season. We went to their new design market that has some well curated product, fashion and jewelry designers as well as artists and illustrators selling some cool stuff. The Heimat Bazaar is going to happen from now on every first Saturday of the month. Of course there is again going to be lots of street food at Neue Heimat, especially during their weekly Village Market on Sundays including newbies Tatas with their delicious waffles and their new invention the muffles, as well as awesome egg dishes from The Future Breakfast. A Winter Food Market & Christmas Lounge

A Winter Food Market & Christmas Lounge

This year is absolutely crazy in terms of Christmas, design and foodmarkets. Never were there so many new and alternative concepts out there like this months and we think the variety is just great. We tried to go to a couple of those markets, but to be perfectly honest in a lot of cases the Christmas spirit didn’t really kick in as we hoped it would. Long lines, booths running out of food too soon, lack of Christmas decoration and some other obsticles came in our way. But there is one little market that seems to have done it all right. Thanks to the fact it’s mostly known to insiders it is not as crowded as the other so you can actually enjoy your Chrismas punch in piece and don’t have to squeeze into the last little corner of the hut.

The Winter Food Market at the Audi quattro lounge is probably one of the nicest and most carefully decorated Christmas markets I have seen this year. The round tent makes the lounge seem like a snow globe full of Christmas spirit and cosyness and there is actually a real big snowglobe inside. The lounge inside the globe tent has a lot of warm and comfortable seating to enjoy your food and drinks and outside you have some of the best street food vendors in town includng Mogg&Melzer with their delicious pastrami sandwhiches, MariaMaria Arepas with some South American flavors, Cicciolina bringing you some Italian delicacies, Suppkultur with some Holiday soups, as well as roasted almonds and chestnuts and of course lots of Glühwein, freshly prepared with spices and fruits.

And on top of that every automobile lover will get to see some of the latest Audi quattro four wheel drive technology and some of their new car models in the cleverly designed exhibition lounge. Be assured, the four wheel drive will come in handy in the German winter.

The Winter Food Market and the Audi quattro lounge will be open daily until this coming Sunday at the free space next to Tacheles in Mitte. Enjoy some impressions and the details after the jump.

Welcome to the Neue Heimat

Welcome to the Neue Heimat

Since its opening 3 weeks ago the new location Neue Heimat at the RAW grounds at Revaler Straße in Friedrichshain has been pretty much the talk of the town with its amazing street food market events on Sundays. The concept is not really new as the street food hype has already been successfully established by Bite Club and Markthalle 9. But after all of our team members have visited it in the past few weeks we agree theirs came out really nice and is a great addition to the street food event scene of Berlin. The space is just really fun to hang out, versatile in its design and so much space to sit and enjoy the delicious food which is really an advantage to some of the other street food markets. After the jump we have some impressions of the location during its Street Food Sunday market. Enjoy!

UPDATE: The Neue Heimat had to close in 2015. In 2016 the place is lead by a new team with a similar concept, but different booths and a new name. The old team of Neue Heimat is organizing food markets elsewhere.

10 Amazing Things to do in New York City

10 Amazing Things to do in New York City

Some Berliners like to climb the Brooklyn bridge and replace the American flags with white ones when they are in New York. When we went to the Big Apple recently, we were maybe not quite as progressive.

I have to admit that I avoided going to the states after my last visit 12 years ago. But despite my general disinterest in this country I always knew that I had to give New York City another try, especially since my last visit is almost 20 years in the past. And boy am I glad that I finally did it. I was amazed by this city, much more than I expected to be. Everything seems to be bigger, better, faster, stronger – and I’m not even exaggerating. It almost felt a bit odd when I returned to Berlin afterwards and everything almost seemed small and ordinary to me.

New York is an extreme city, but much like Berlin it’s totally up to you what you make of it. And thanks to our local guide and good friend Archer we managed to make something really great out of it and had a phantastic time there. To share some of our excitement with you we compiled a list of 10 amazing things to do in New York that will hopefully inspire your next trip.
