Rathaus – A House for Rats

Rathaus – A House for Rats

I really love it when you guys send us the funny stuff you do in Berlin. There are so many cute and wild ideas and I’m glad that we can post some of them here. One of the recent submissions we received comes from Berlin-based design studio Mikesian. The guys had a really nice way to explain their project, so I wanna quote them:

“Rathaus. Rat. House. See what we did there? It might not be as silly as it sounds. The German word for town hall has its roots in ‘council’ and ‘house’. That got us thinking; in Berlin’s increasingly precarious housing situation, what if even the most forgotten members of society had somewhere to live? Even the ones with tails? So this is our leaving present to the city – our Rathauses. Houses for rats. We hope they make themselves at home.”

Berlin’s Very Own Mona Lisa

Berlin’s Very Own Mona Lisa

Berlin can boast some impressive murals, and it’s no surprise that the newest addition to the bunch has drawn immediate attention. The huge version of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is impossible to miss. She occupies the side wall of the East Side Hotel in Friedrichshain and presents an interesting contrast to the often abstract artworks from the East Side Gallery, which is just on the opposite side of the street.

The Berlin art collective Die Dixons has previously been involved in noteworthy contributions to the city’s murals with the famous Meat Mural or the huge street art project The Haus. This time, they joined forces with the artists Tank, Weisse Seite, and FIX77. The graffiti they created together is apparently the world’s biggest Mona Lisa reproduction.

Let’s Dance – A Berlin Ballerina

Let’s Dance – A Berlin Ballerina

photos: Anna Rafeeva

Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free. – Rumi

Sometimes, no matter how hard the surroundings – all you can do is dance. There are enough reasons no matter what the situation. Seems odd? But you can move forward lightly even on the hardest grounds. All you need is the right inner rhythm.

The photographs of Anna Rafeeva are dreamy, soft and powerful – what better location to place them then good old, rugged Berlin? In the midst of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, the photographer captured a Ballerina flying through Berlin and dancing away in front of colorful walls. See the beautiful shots right after the jump. Murals of Berlin: Herakut

Murals of Berlin: Herakut

These days Berlin got one more awesome amazing street art mural more! I love that this is totally becoming a thing here and it seems the murals are getting more and more refined and elaborate. We owe quite a big percentage of the new city murals to the work of Urban Nation who are actually organizing the artists and getting permissions by the city to use certain walls.

This new one up here is by the German artist duo Herakut who are already for the second time painting a wall in Berlin. It’s located at Greifswalder Str. 87 in Prenzlauer Berg right outside the ring and it’s about motherhood. Coincidently I took these making of photos on mothers day. After the jump we have more details of this new Berlin piece as well as many of their other mural. Enjoy!

The Fading Wrinkles of the City – JR in Berlin

The Fading Wrinkles of the City – JR in Berlin

JR at Gustav-Meyer-Allee

It’s been over a year now that the amazing and huge pastings of French streetartist JR started to pop-up all over the city of Berlin. The oversized photos covering the walls of several buildings in Mitte, Wedding, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg were part of his series Wrinkles of the City that he had already done in other cities such as LA, Shanghai and Havana. On April 17, 2013 his Berlin works were also celebrated with an exhibition at Galerie Henrik Springmann. The idea behind the project is a very charming and simple one: He took portraits of elderly citizens and pasted these onto the walls of their cities melting their own personal history reflected in their wrinkles with that of the city they grew up in.

It’s a beautiful series and I loved discovering all the different artworks all over the city and capturing them on my Instagram channel. Some of them were very present and you walked by them many times, others were more hidden. The last one I only found recently about a year after the exhibition. What I noticed lately was that more and more of the pastings have been disappearing, faded by the weather, ripped off, covered up, or their walls have been torn down. It’s sad to see them go, but that’s also part of their life as art in public. Every exhibition ends some time. Today less than half of the 13 pieces are still there. As I really enjoyed them I thought it would be nice to compile all my Instagrams and photos together in one post as a little memento to the wrinkles of Berlin so at least here on the blog they can exist forever. Enjoy!

The CLASHWALL Event Photos

The CLASHWALL Event Photos

Last Saturday Berlin’s walls got upgraded with yet another amazing huge streetart mural. This new artwork, a collaboration of street artists Wurstbande, Gogoplata and Rylsee, was put together by many small illustrations based on over 380 submitted ideas and sketches of streetart fans. The finalization of the CLASHWALL was accompanied by an open air party and barbeque that took place in the empty space between two buildings on Torstraße 86 where you can still see the huge piece. I joined the festivities and took some photos that you can enjoy after the jump along with a cool video summery.

This Thursday Converse’s SNEAKER CLASH series goes into the next round with the PHOTOCLASH that is taking place at Mein Haus am See for 3 days. Several local artists will “hack” your own photos that you can submit via Twitter or bring to the event and create little artworks out of them. Sounds fun?! Than head over to the PHOTOCLASH Studio at Brunnenstr. 197/198 from April 3-5 from 18-02h. Enjoy!

CLASHWALL – Be Part of the coolest Streetart Mural of Berlin

CLASHWALL – Be Part of the coolest Streetart Mural of Berlin

Wurstbande

Murals are one my favorite forms of art in public. I just love it when artists turn buildings into giant canvases. Not only do these artworks stand out by their size, they also change the city landscape into something creative that is much more than just concrete, steal and glass.

As part of Converse‘ SNEAKER CLASH series of artistic installations in 16 cities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa the three Berlin-based street artists and illustrators Wurstbande, Gogoplata and Rylsee will create the CLASHWALL here in Berlin. The CLASHWALL is a big mural covering the entire front of a house on Torstraße in Mitte with drawings that have been especially created based on the suggestions and sketches of street art and sneaker fans. Find out more about the artists, how to be part of the mural and the big live event here in Berlin after the jump.

Street Lab meets Berlin – Exhibition

There was a time we were hunting for street art much more often . Recently we got a little lazy about that.  Luckily there are certain occasion were streetart is presented in galleries. One of this rare occasion is the Street Lab meets Berlin Festival this weekend. It presents a selection of national and international urban artists who expose the urban world instead of simply just illustrating it. The workshop “Keystone Editions” will host an exhibition of works by all of the artists participating in the festival. The big opening of the exhibition is tonight. There will also be the possibility to see a famous street artist in action.  Street artist El Bocho will be at Keystone Editions for a mini-residency during the festival.
