Dear Kaisers,
I cannot believe that you have passed, brutally chucked to the ground by your mean, giant stepbrothers EDEKA and REWE. You have been around since 1881 surviving generations of hungry Berliners. You were there all this time, always serving the best food for us, always looking for the best price/performance ratio in town, and even serving us liquor at times when none of your family members cared anymore. You said farewell to the actual last emperor, you survived the most dreadful wars, you saw walls rise and fall and we just took you for granted all this time. But now, now you are gone. Kaisers – we will miss you!
Kaisers, it didn’t matter what neighborhood my life would take me to, you would always be there and greet me at least twice from Marzahn to Zehlendorf. Sometimes I knew, but sometimes you would just take me by surprise. But, you would always bring a smile to my face when I spotted you in that cute ‘lil red outfit of yours with that sweet teapot symbol. No one could pull of a ‘lil teapot symbol the way you did. Not in their wildest dreams would your siblings go for this bold styling statetment – ever! They would just look silly. But you didn’t!

Having studied at another culturally forgettable -yet very beautiful in the summer – German town, I always thought that the main difference between living in the capital and living in a place, where breathing large amounts of non-polluted air almost didn’t feel right, was the night life. What differentiates Berlin from other smaller cities is not just its numerous wild parties, where the right drug combination can bring you to euphoric levels of happiness despite the insufferably monotonous beats and pull you into a life crisis the next day, while wondering how you managed to look like you already had a divorce and a few heart-attacks. Luckily, Berlin is so much more than that.
The main difference lies in the possibilities awaiting when the sunlight starts to dim and the city puts on a new outfit, less fancy but always stylish; not the let’s-have-a-reunion-at-the-cemetery-kind, but in a far more original way.
Blame it on your insomnia, your constantly unsatisfied desire to explore as many as layers of this city as possible, your biological needs, or simply your Fear Of Missing Out, Berlin is here to keep you company through the sleepless nights, when doing anything other than “sleeping, because I am working tomorrow” could feel just a little bit abnormal; to be your remedy. Berlin has so many great qualities about it, but if we’re being honest, some of them are just the same as in other big cities and not really that specific for Berlin. But there is a few that are really just here in this city. One of them is a particularly fun one and it’s one that people don’t believe me when I’m speaking about it. It’s the Disco Kaiser’s! By now there are actually a few, but I’m talking now about the Kaiser’s at Warschauer Straße. During the day it’s a totally normal supermarket, but in the night, especially on weekends, it’s a complete party. If course this is mostly because a lot of clubs and bars in Friedrichshain are near by and in the weekend the young people get their drinks and snacks for the warm-up here. Since they started their 24/7 opening hours it’s even more crazy at nights and they also introduced colorful disco lights and music in these hours. It’s the most fun grocery shopping experience and chances to flirt are as high as in the clubs.
Warsteiner has caught up on this very special unique Berlin nightlife experience and brought it one step further. On November 7 they are taking over the Kaiser’s at Lio in Lichterfelde and turn it into a real disco with mirror balls and DJs and all. It’s of course still going to be possible to shop during the party and you will even get a shopping list at the door which you can use to get all of the things on it for free (yeay!). Noah Becker (we saw him with his band Bakery at Jackie O in the summer and he’s really cool!), Primo Disco and Prunk will spin some records for you and turn the produce section into a disco dancefloor. Berlin has proven to be a city where technology innovations of all kinds find an interested audience. The blooming and booming start-up scene has created various new jobs and economic perspectives. Finally people that have finished university here have a proper chance to get a job without moving to Munich or Hamburg. Any new development has of course also a bunch of new enemies. Not everyone thinks that the start-ups can create economic stability for a city which such a huge amount of financial problems. Often I noticed that people who are not very fond of start-ups have never actually been in touch with any of that. I have a great amount of friends who started a small business with their ideas and I like supporting all of them as much as I can. Either you are a big fan or a big disapprover I recommend you to visit the Tech Open Air – Unconference this Wednessday and the satellite events this Thursday.
On one of this events I am taking part in a panel to speak with Alexander Görlach (Chief Editor, The European) and Lukas Kircher (CEO, KircherBurkhardt) about the future of journalism. The event is at the Supermarkt at Brunnenstrasse in Wedding and it is free like most of the other satellite events. The discussion will be in German.
