Berlin has a new space and platform for emerging local designers and what better to put yourself onto the map with the most exciting fashion show during this week’s Berlin Fashion Week. PLATTE is a project dedicated to supporting the fashion scene of Berlin in a sustainable way by offering space, structure, and expertise to upcoming local designers and brands. The makers of PLATTE are dear of colleagues of iHeartBerlin that have over a decade of experience in the field. Sevil Uguz is the founder of LNFA which is a network and fashion store for local brands at Bikini Berlin, and Arne Eberle is a Berlin Fashion Week veteran and co-founder of OE Magazine.
In their amazing space at Memhardstraße, they will host pop-up stores, workshops, showrooms, exhibitions, events and so much more. With their first event that happened on Tuesday, they gave a preview of what’s to come and their focus on working in an interdisciplinary way. They invited members of the Berlin ballroom scene to curate a runway show of a different kind. Housemother Ambrosia from the Kiki House of Angels brought together a cast of diverse performers who proofed that models can have any size, shape, and identity and look fabulous on the runway. And European housefather David from the house of Milan put together the choreography for the show that would have spectators gagging later on.

I’m well aware that there is a certain controversy about self-made or non-medical face masks. The German government has so far been shy about ordering the people to wear face protection, mostly because of the extreme shortage of available certified masks but also because the effectiveness of masks is still debated. One thing is certain though: Those few countries that have a mask policy in place seem to have much flatter curves. This can, of course, have various reasons. But then again, if you just think about it. The more people wearing masks, the less those will accidentally cough or sneeze out into the open in the early stages of infection when they are the most contagious and the least likely to show symptoms yet.
While a few weeks ago the Germans seemed to be quite reluctant to wear masks, in the last week it has dramatically changed and I see a lot of people with self-made or other fabric masks out in the streets. And I do admit it does make me feel a little more safe seeing more people around wearing masks and consciously protecting others from being accidentally infected by them.

Even though Berlin sometimes is dominated by shades of grey there are often splashes of color coming up like shimmers of hope. The Berlin Alternative Fashion Week is one of those shimmers. No other fashion event in Berlin has ever managed to bring so much color, creativity, happiness and humor into one place. I’m so glad that we have this event in our city, proving that Berlin is the fruitful soil for a spectrum of fashion that is beyond fast fashion and commercial brands. Beloved Berlin-based designers such as Tata Christiane, Maison Mason, Tzuji and UY show their expressive collections here together with many newcomers and international designers. For me one of the big highlights this season was the sculptural collection of Justyna Koeke who created dresses modeled after children’s drawings. The elaborate and playful gowns were beautifully presented on senior models, what a fantastic presentation this was! And of course Russian artist Andrey Bartenev’s Bubbles of Hope parade in the end was once again an unforgettable finale that made everyone jump up from their seats. Principal sponsor airberlin has chosen wisely to support this wonderful platform of creativity and positivity for so many seasons now and we are forever grateful.
Fashion photographer Sebastian Pollin went backstage to capture some of the most amazing looks and he described the experience as a paradise of photo opportunities. And looking at the photos he seems to be more than right!

If you are looking for a place to get some fashion from Berlin designers there is one address that you absolutely need to visit: The two LNFA concept stores at the Bikini Berlin. LNFA is short for Live Networking for Fashion and Art and actually started as an event series. But as things go in Berlin one thing leads to another and suddenly you find yourself opening a shop in a brand new concept mall. You have to give the owner Sevil Uguz a lot of credit for really making a big effort to promote local designers the way she does, beside her shops she is also going to host a whole string of runway shows and events during Berlin Fashion Week next week.
But let’s get back to the shops. When the Bikini opened last year so did the first LNFA store that brought together a lot of young labels of different styles. The concept was so successful, probably because there was no other store like this in town, that they opened yet another one right next door with a selection of designers that is a bit more premium than the ones from the first store. A lot of our favorite designers are represented here, including Esther Perbandt, Marina Hoermanseder, Sopopular, Barre Noir, IVANMAN, Vektor, Tata Christiane, DYN and so many more it’s impossible to name them all. During next week’s Berlin Fashion Week there are going to be lots of specials and events where you can meet the designers themselves. Stay tuned to their Facebook page to find out more. After the jump some impressions of both stores as well as the details.

On Saturday the fashion scene of Berlin got a brand new playground. The Berlin Alternative Fashion Week is dedicated to those designers that like to break out of conventions, that dare to be crazy, colorful, fun and sexy and have a good sense of humor and self-ironie. It was really a pleasure both for the eyes and for the heart to see models smiling and dancing and the catwalk, women with curves, men with silver hair, boys on heels, and I don’t even know how to put that crazy spectacular finale of Andrey Bartenev into words, but it was indeed spectacular and will not be forgotten so easily by the audience. The fashion was definately fun to look at, some really impressive, some a bit more on the trashy side, but really always entertaining. But have a look for yourself after the jump where we have some a lot of amazing impressions by our talented contributing photographer Olga Khristolyubova. Enjoy!

It was about time: Berlin is getting an alternative fashion event for the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The first edition of the Berlin Alternative Fashion Week is happening in the first week of October 2014 and will include an array of events on several days such as fashion presentations, a designer market, TEDx talks and fashion parties. The fashion that is being showcased and sold here is quite different from what we are used to from the official Berlin Fashion Week that usually happens in January and July each year. The organizers of the event describe it as alternative while I like to call it avant-garde, progressive and artistic. One of our favorite carzy Berlin designers is going to be part of the show: Tata Christiane, as well as a couple of really excentric international designers and Berlin newcomer Alles. So far only 8 of the participating designers have been revealed on the brand new website with more to come in the following weeks. To celebrate the start of a new platform for Berlin’s creative fashion scene the makers are throwing a big launch party this Friday at Urban Spree. Come by get a taste of what’s to come in October. Get a preview of the first announced designers after the jump.

Let’s face the facts: During Berlin Fashion Week in January and July there is just so much going on compressed in just a couple of days that it’s humanly impossible to make it to all the events that might interest you. So it’s a not a big surprise that some event organizers (including my own project Designer Scouts) have moved outside of Fashion Week to avoid these overcrowded days where everyone is just complaining how stressful everything is (first world problems…). The new fashion festival Berlin Dress would fit perfectly into the Fashion Week, but the organizers Berlin Pieces have decided to do it now in late August. I welcome that decision because in between Fashion Weeks there is so few fashion events going on in Berlin that I am happy that we have yet another. Find out more about it and win guestlist spots for the opening on Friday after the jump.

Unfortunately we could not make it to every show of Fashion Week. Our biggest lost was the amazing show of Tata Christiane, Vava Dudu and Charlie Le Mindu at the Uni+form Store. But sometimes photographs can be more than just a documentation. Watching the amazing pictures of Olga Khristolyubova I really had the feeling I was at the show. This is why I had to share them with you. See show and backstage photos after the jump.

On Friday probably 90% of our fellow bloggers were celebrating at the StyleNite after party because apparently that’s the place to be that night. We had a different place to: The after show party of some amazing designers who we love and who are as mad as a box of hair (at least in the case of one of them this is meant quite literal): Tata Christiane, Charlie Le Mindu and Vava Dudu. The crazy party organized byconcept store UNI+FORM took place at P.O.P. and none-other than Peaches was entertaining the eclectic crowd. Some impressions after the jump.

Fashion Week is nearly over. But wait, there is one person I want to present you before all my fruits are back in the closet: Tata Christiane. This amazing artist just makes me gaga. She is not only one of the most talented and colorful fashion designers in town. She has also a band together called Aniaetleprogrammeur. The music is very dark and somehow haunted. A perfect clash with the color and print magic she is doing on all here designs and dresses. On my street style day in Wedding I was wearing one of here outfits and a headpiece she designed. Also, on the first day of Fashion Week I was wearing a unisex piece from Tata. There I met another blogger called Max Bonheur who was wearing one of her outfits, too. Tonight she is doing a fashion installation and a party. My fruitiest singer Peaches will have a DJ set there along with Tata, Charlie Le Mindu and Vava Dudu so dont miss it. More information are in our event guide. After the jump some of my best poses in Tata’s amazing dresses.
