But in addition to leading these groundbreaking projects, this Brazilian ex-pat is a prolific artist himself. Starting on February 22nd, you can see his newest photography work at The Ballery.

Here’s to the Beauty of Men

Here’s to the Beauty of Men

photo: Jean-Baptiste Huong

For the longest time showing the beauty of the human body was a bit of a taboo in art and artistic photography. What was completely natural for the old masters is now deemed to be too commercial to count as art. Art should not be appealing, let alone be beautiful. This is something for advertising, or in the case of the human physique: erotica.

It’s a shame really, because the human body is as good of an object for art as any, and not just as something abstract or for the sake documentary. I’m glad that the art world seems to slowly but steadily overcome this prejudice. More artists experiment with nudity, sex, even pornography. Even galleries are picking up on this. Now more than ever artists who dedicate themselves to the beauty of the human body are no longer just considered photographers, but actual artists. I think this development is very positive and we should embrace this positivity.

Adornism – World Revolution through Over-Decoration

Adornism – World Revolution through Over-Decoration

Step into The Ballery in Schöneberg for a multi-sensual exhibition that is all but fitting within the norm. A group of artists has come together in an exciting exhibition of ‘Adornism’ shaking up today’s numb world of mass-production and consumerism through excessive decoration in art and self outside the stagnant white art cube.

In history humans have been decorating their bodies around the world for tens of thousands of years and the selected group of artists is bringing this forward into the 21st century with an eclectic collection of paintings, photographs, wearable art and sculpture for a multi-sensual experience. These works don’t aim to please nor fit within the norm and the creation rather is for its own sake. The artists breath fresh air into dead and uniform objects and with that starting a revolution in itself as their expression of the complex and ambiguous experience of modern existence. Forget modern minimalism, this exhibition is all about opulence and bringing life to images and objects by the detail oriented and skilled adorning of self and art. See details and artists after the jump.

This city has many communities of different nations from all over the world that all live together here mixing their cultures into the big juicy cocktail that is Berlin. One of these many communities are Russian artists living in Berlin. I think they are fairly quiet compared to other nationalities, but with the upcoming Russian Contemporary Art Week making some noise in the city.

The RCAW is taking place in 3 galleries which are The Ballery in Schönenberg that is showcasing the work of 3 highlighted artist, the LemoArt Gallery in Prenzlauer Berg that is showing a bigger selection of younger Russian talents and finally a project by UdK students presented at Panke. The whole thing gets kicked off this Friday (May 15, 2015) with the opening reception of the main exhibition at The Ballery that shows the amazing work of Katerina Belkina, Igor Skaletsky, and Vera Veritas Kochubey. On May 29th the second part of the RCAW starts at The Ballery with additional artists in their line-up. We have a little preview of that after the jump.
